To not get Disney?

Fridaysgirl · 14/09/2019 15:57

I'm talking about adults here, not kids.

Why do grown men and women feel the need to wear Minnie ears, buy mugs, bags and T shirts of Disney related stuff?

And why in god's name would you pay £££££s to go and gawp and an artificial pink princess castle when you could pay far less to see something real? Or cuddle a Minnie/Mickey Mouse (or should I say a stranger dressed up)?

Please can someone explain all this to me?

Some people like artificial fun. That’s why I love Disney and Vegas!

tictac86 · 14/09/2019 23:05

I love disney and my family do as well. I might be a grown woman but I'm obsessed with it and really it just makes me happy. I also live in my own bubble and couldn't care less about what others think. I'm happy and successful or does being happy make me successful. We also dont just holiday in florida for disney and go to other wonderful countries for culture.

Debfronut · 14/09/2019 23:07

Because its fun and makes me feel young again. I also love culture and visit other countries and places but Disney World has been our family holiday destination since my children were born. Now they are 27,17 and 15 and we have just come back from Orlando where we had fun in the parks and on the Disney Cruise, we made some fabulous memories with them. Next year when we pay off our mortgage we will buy into the Disney Vacation Club so we can have holidays with or without them going forward.I have never met anyone who does not really get the magic unless they are quite serious types. I have to be serious and adult all year I want to have fun and be daft and have good times with my family. On the cruise we visited Chichen Itza one of the new 7 wonders of the world so you can do culture with Disney.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 14/09/2019 23:11

Meh .... that somes up Disney for me from child to adult

FenellaVelour · 14/09/2019 23:40

My mother used to threaten me with Disney when I was naughty 😂

I’m not serious at all but I don’t get Disney. We took the children a few years ago and they were utterly underwhelmed. They did not particularly enjoy either Disney Florida or Disneyland Paris. They liked the rollercoasters, and we all were impressed by universal but after about 3 days they refused to go to anymore parks. When we asked them the highlight of the holiday it was riding segways about 300 miles away from Orlando. Asked them if they would like to go back and they were unanimous that, no thank you, rollercoasters were good but it was a bit boring.

Please read this:
The Disneyization of Society - Alan Bryman, 1999

Then you will understand how right you are to find the Disney thing disquieting.

Frangible · 15/09/2019 00:35

What baffles me — judging by threads on Disney trips on here — is, despite all that saccharine happiness, just how much of a joyless slog it all sounds, all that queueing and planning routes around the parks, or between the parks, and fast passes, Busy Day Guides, Xtra Magic Hours, dining packages, and casual references to queueing times for new/popular rides being between two and six hours (!)

MadameFoner · 15/09/2019 00:37

I enjoy the park , visually, attention to detail, escapism etc. HOWEVER, I totally do not get grown adults wearing Mickey ears, t-shirts, queuing to hug a sweaty teen dressed as a giant mouse or dog (is goofy / Pluto a dog? Who the fuck knows). As a pp said up thread if you're in this camp it's akin to killing Bambi with your own fair hands. I think some posters are being a bit un-Disney to the OP! I'm sure they're aware that everyone has they're "thing", likes dislikes etc.

redappleandaquamarinebow1987 · 15/09/2019 00:40

@Frangible on paper yes it sounds a slog but because everyone is abdolutly in holidaymode everyone is happy and always cheerful. It's a relaxed atmosphere where everyone becomes more open hearted so because of the energy around everyone is uplifted

CurlyhairedAssassin · 15/09/2019 00:45

I haven’t seen half the Disney films. Never seen the Jungle Book, Aladdin, little Mermaid, Lion King or Frozen. Or any of Toy Story if that’s Disney. There are LOADS I haven’t seen. The kids are teens now and saw them at school and have never wanted to watch them again. I like the old Mickey and Donald Duck cartoons and woukd smile at and shake hands with someone in a Mickey costume but I haven’t got an urge to pay to have breakfast with them. I’m a softy at heart and would fill up at the parade I reckon but It’s a Small World at Alton Towers makes me barf so I’d give that a miss Grin

I hate crowds and shit theme park fast food and I hate most fast rides so, with all of the above taken into consideration, I’ve never felt the urge to go to Disney, even as a kid. I’ve never had any merchandise but the kids had bits when they were little. They have never asked to go to DisneyWorld even when seeing it on the adverts. They don’t appear interested at all.

So it’s not for me either, OP. I do like HP though and am a bit of a kid with that so I think it’s probably people who like theme parks and the Disney films that would be the biggest fans.

MadameFoner · 15/09/2019 00:45

I also dislike that people assume Florida = Disney / Universal. They're are so many other fantastic things to see and do there. State Parks, nature reserves, museums etc!

Mummyshark2019 · 15/09/2019 00:46

Because is magical Shock

Frangible · 15/09/2019 00:49

@redapple, someone just said the queues were between two and six hours for something - a Hagrid ride? How can that ever be fun, however cheerful people are about it? Shock

redappleandaquamarinebow1987 · 15/09/2019 00:51

@Frangible never saw a que beyond 2 hours long

redappleandaquamarinebow1987 · 15/09/2019 00:52

@Frangible also harry potter is universal studios not disney

Frangible · 15/09/2019 00:52

That still seems like an awful lot to me! I mean, how long is the average ride at the end of all that waiting? Five or ten minutes?

CurlyhairedAssassin · 15/09/2019 00:53

God yes the length of queues for rides. I spent one of my worst ever “fun day out” recently at Siam Park water park in tenerife. It’s award winning, one of the best in the world apparently and as my teens like water parks off we went. oh.my.god. There should be a law on how many people they let in. You had to shuffle along the path from one ride to the other. They ran out of food and lockers. I gave up on the slides and lay on a sunbed for the rest of the day and sent the kids off. They came back happy but said the best rides you queued for an hour or so. I just can’t be arsed. Nothing is that good!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 15/09/2019 00:55

“ never saw a que beyond 2 hours long”

Shock

See, I just think of queuing for 2 hours and think, What an absolute waste of my time and money! For a couple of minutes??? How much is that per second of ride? Grin

Shockers · 15/09/2019 00:59

We took DD for her 18th. She has LD and really loves dressed up characters (she hugs them Smile).

I didn’t ‘get it’- in fact I hated it. DD however, loved it, as was expected, and wants to go again for her 21st...

Aquestionforyouall · 15/09/2019 01:00

The one thing I do not get is the personalised t shirts. No need.

‘I can’t keep calm I’m going to Disney’

And saw one on fb

The kid had ‘best birthday ever’
And the dad had something like ‘most expensive birthday ever’

But then I’m not a look at me person so wouldn’t encourage people by having a top that needs read.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 15/09/2019 01:02

Shockers, what did you hate about it?

redappleandaquamarinebow1987 · 15/09/2019 01:10

@Frangible depends on popularity and ride capacity. Short ones cabmb be 5-15 mins longer ones can be 45mins to an hour. Only ride that was two hours was the new avatar ride.

redappleandaquamarinebow1987 · 15/09/2019 01:11

@CurlyhairedAssassin most ques have interactive features build in to keep people entertained

Shockers · 15/09/2019 01:17

@CurlyhairedAssassin- it felt sinister; I honestly didn’t see many people smiling, except the characters in the parade, and they had fixed smiles and lots of makeup. There were long queues for rides. The food was truly awful (my fault- I should’ve taken a picnic). It just wasn’t my thing. I accept that it’s lots of folks thing though- DD included.
