To not get Disney?

Fridaysgirl · 14/09/2019 15:57

I'm talking about adults here, not kids.

Why do grown men and women feel the need to wear Minnie ears, buy mugs, bags and T shirts of Disney related stuff?

And why in god's name would you pay £££££s to go and gawp and an artificial pink princess castle when you could pay far less to see something real? Or cuddle a Minnie/Mickey Mouse (or should I say a stranger dressed up)?

Please can someone explain all this to me?

What a totally radical and controversial opinion that has never been expressed on this site ever.

Makesmilingyourbesthobby · 14/09/2019 16:46

The same reason some people like to take pictures with someone dressed as Santa Claus or mascots at butlins/pontins it's just part of the experience there and different people like different things and take different photos of different things wherever they go, me myself I love Disney and most of what it offers

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 14/09/2019 16:46

I don’t understand people who travel thousands of miles to lie on a beach and see nothing if the culture of the country they visit

I dont get this either. Does my head in. But for some people it's their idea of heaven.

Also nudist dining/beaches. Do not get.

Each to their own OP. But I'd say its a bit like Harry Potter or Hello Kitty. Disney has crossed the child/adult divide in the same way HP and HK have.

doublebarrellednurse · 14/09/2019 16:47

For the same reason people like Gin.
For the same reason people like music.
For the same reason people like movies.
For the same reason people like TV.

A) they enjoy it
B) escapism

Why is it so difficult for people to understand and just let people live?

I don't particularly enjoy Disney and spending ££££££ to go there would not be my choice but it's very simple to understand why people do.

BelgianWhistles · 14/09/2019 16:49

And why in god's name would you pay £££££s to go and gawp and an artificial pink princess castle when you could pay far less to see something real?

Because I can’t go on It’s A Small World and eat Dole Whip at Neuschwanstein.

By the way- and this will absolutely blow your mind- I manage to go to Disney and see real castles across Europe. I know. Baffling.

coffeeeandtv · 14/09/2019 16:50

I totally agree OP, I have a SIL who eats, sleeps, breathes all thing Disney. She watches the films over often posting on Facebook that's she's spending her day off having a duvet day with her movies, she's a 50+ woman with grown up kids but very few friends and a neglected house, I try very hard to understand the attraction but I just can't see it...... I 100% agree that I'm cynical and I hate the commercial aspect. Each to their own.

OtraCosaMariposa · 14/09/2019 16:57

We've been to Florida a couple of times and have booked to go back next year. It's not just Mickey Mouse and cartoons. Disneyworld in Florida is 4 theme parks, 2 water parks, shows, rides, animals. star wars, roller coasters, fireworks... there's lots more to it than someone dressed up as a mouse. The 4th July fireworks at Epcot are genuinely the best display I've ever seen. Amazing.

Just because you enjoy Disney things doesn't mean you don't enjoy a mooch around a real castle. You can do both. And when you're there, it's so easy to get swept up in the happy, smiley positive vibe. Ears and all of it.

nowifi · 14/09/2019 16:58

I am amazed how anyone can afford it! Would love to go only for my daughter though, not so fussed myself.

TeenPlusTwenties · 14/09/2019 17:05

I just don't understand the need for such total escapism in the artificial.

  • video gaming
  • following fake instgrammers / bloggers
  • LARP
  • immersing yourself in films or music

All of them are to some extent 'artificial'.

Linguaphile · 14/09/2019 17:11

YANBU. I don’t get it either. It’s harmless fun though, so to each their own.

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 14/09/2019 17:13

I hate it. In fact I hated it when I was a child. I hated being a child too. It's false and saccharine and total bollocks.

riotlady · 14/09/2019 17:17

It makes me happy!

There’s also a feeling of safety to it, when you watch a Disney film you know they’re going to sing some nice songs and everything will be ok in the end

redexpat · 14/09/2019 17:34

Presumably it sparks joy for some! Maybe you should just Let it Go! Let it Go!

Answerthequestion · 14/09/2019 17:43

I don’t get either. I thought it was fairly rubbish with kids and couldn’t think of much worse without them but I’m sure people wouldn’t like things I like

pimbee · 14/09/2019 17:48

Nostalgia? Reflecting on magical memories as a child? Escapism? I love Disney, I don't do the whole dressing up thing and have limited knowledge, but cannot wait to have a glimpse back to my childhood memories when we go to Florida next year. It's not that hard to understand surely?

EnglishRose13 · 14/09/2019 18:02

I'm going to Disneyland on Monday. 😬😬😬

Purpleartichoke · 14/09/2019 18:05

Disney is a dream for people who live organization and efficiency. It’s like a giant Container store. Walking around actually gives me a sense of peace. Then you add the whimsy factor. Love the place.

Birdie5577 · 14/09/2019 18:06

YANBU I absolutely loathe Disney and always have done. All the saccharine sweetness does my head in.

I was seriously distraught when Disney bought Marvel Sad

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 14/09/2019 18:13

Because it makes me happy. It's as simple as that, the bright colours, the characters (some of which I've known since I was little). The songs. The list goes on. We went to Disney world a couple of years ago and it was the happiest fortnight of my life. I'm pregnant with DC1 and we intend to take him when he's old enough. There's so many reasons that I love Disney. Totally fine that you don't but there's no reason to look down on people for enjoy something, it's not hurting anyone.

NearlyGranny · 14/09/2019 18:20

It's cheesy, it's ersatz, it's sexist, it's expensive and I've long thought it culturally imperialistic. But that's all just opinions. Cartoon princesses with faces wider than their waists, tacky clothing in Disney shops made in Chinese factories (sweatshops perhaps?) and nasty, overpriced plastic toys. No prices on the shelf edge so you have to handle the goods to find the cost. At the parks I gather that wealthier people can pay extra to queue jump and I've heard employees are scraping by on minimum wages. Both those leave a nasty taste in my mouth..

I get that lots of people find it magical though I will never understand why but I'm glad it's there for them. We're all different!

redappleandaquamarinebow1987 · 14/09/2019 18:24

@NearlyGranny actually no you can't pay extra to jump ques. Every visitor gets 3 fast passes no more no less. It's ok to dislike something but at least inform yourself

JacquesHammer · 14/09/2019 18:24

No prices on the shelf edge so you have to handle the goods to find the cost

That’s not the case, certainly in Paris. All prices are clearly displayed on the shelf. There are also a good selection of pocket money priced toys/souvenirs at say €1 or €2. Something a LOT of places in the U.K. could learn from!

Amanduh · 14/09/2019 18:27

I’d rather wear mouse ears and skip round a pink castle than lay on a blow up mattress in the cold and rain in a tent in the dark with a shared toilet but hey millions of people do that and enjoy it.
Different people like to do different things. Shock horror.

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 14/09/2019 18:27

@redappleandaquamarinebow1987 yup it's universal that charge a fortune for fastpass

madeyemoodysmum · 14/09/2019 18:29

I enjoy it for the following reasons

  1. It’s super fun to be a kid again
  2. It’s nice to act a child and wear cute gear
  3. I like eating crap food for a few days and not feel bad about it
  4. It’s nostalgic
  5. I love roller coasters and rides and Florida does it best.
  6. I know the characters are actors but who cares. It’s all in the spirit of it.
  7. It’s a holiday so everyone is happy
  8. Disney is managed well and is good value for what is included.

I’ve been Florida twice and DLP 3 times and always had a fab time.

Planning another Florida trip in next 5 years.
