To not get Disney?

I'm talking about adults here, not kids.

Why do grown men and women feel the need to wear Minnie ears, buy mugs, bags and T shirts of Disney related stuff?

And why in god's name would you pay £££££s to go and gawp and an artificial pink princess castle when you could pay far less to see something real? Or cuddle a Minnie/Mickey Mouse (or should I say a stranger dressed up)?

Please can someone explain all this to me?

@smartcarnotsosmartdriver omg tell me about it. My jaw dropped when I saw the price so decided to skip universal this year

PoppingOneOutIn2020 · 14/09/2019 18:35

Our parents took us when we were 2, 9 and 11.

Mum surprised us all at Christmas with a holiday to Disney, at 16, 23 and 25... our partners and my niece who is 2.

We all absolutely loved it, it bought back so many memories and it was even more special with tm partners and niece there who have never been to Disney.

I have been on holiday with my family in 7 years after suffering massive anxiety and panic attacks, I always stayed home when they went away as I could leave the house. After CBT, building a career, buying a house with OH and now expecting our first baby, it was the most incredible holiday I could have asked for to have all of us together, enjoying ourselves before settling back down with my new little family for a while before we start to plan our next big holiday with a new addition!

You sound like you have a chip on your shoulder.

I’d rather wear mouse ears and skip round a pink castle than lay on a blow up mattress in the cold and rain in a tent in the dark with a shared toilet

Oh 1000 times this. I will never, ever understand why anyone would ever want to camp. Different people like different things though, don't they?

I do think a lot of the Disney-haters (although not so many on this thread so far) have a superior air, as if they are simply above that sort of mass market entertainment.

KitKat1985 · 14/09/2019 18:38

Because it's fun? I do a job (nursing) and see people in misery, pain and dying on a daily basis, and have realised life is too short not to let your hair down and pretend you are a kid again sometimes, just because of some sort of 'culture snobbery' about going to Disney. And it's easy entertainment as there's always something to do or watch, and some of the attractions, rides and firework displays really are amazing. I'm not really much into collecting Disney merchandise but can understand why people do. I mean people collect all sorts of things right?

And it is possible to like Disney and like culture. I'm a National trust and English heritage member too and love a bit of culture and beautiful open spaces too. But going to Disney lets me feel like a kid again, with no responsibilities, and I need that in my life every now and again.

FenellaVelour · 14/09/2019 18:43

I never liked Disney even as a child, but there are plenty of other things I liked - then and now - which wouldn’t be other people’s cup of tea.

This meme sums it up really...

EnglishRose13 · 14/09/2019 18:45

I don't get Harry Potter. Shall I start a thread about that?

PeopleMover · 14/09/2019 18:50

I'm sure why are so baffled by it? It's no different to people support a football team/ band, buying a t-shirt, cup, hat, bag, getting a tattoo etc??

We are not long back from a trip to Disney Florida and there's no place like it! Loved it so much we are planning to go again next year.

We also go to 'real' places, but I'd pick the Disney castle over any other Grin

I can’t stand either. Disney and camping my 2 worst nightmares. The only thing I’d like less is camping at Disney

Flibbitygibbit · 14/09/2019 19:07

We are going in 20 days. Am VERY excited. Am 54!!!!

Wiltshirelass2019 · 14/09/2019 19:09

It’s a bit weird if you’re an adult but hey each their own

somanyresusablebags · 14/09/2019 19:09

My meanest colleague loves Disney. As far as I can tell she hates all people and has pictures of Disney princesses all over her office. It is surreal.

SouthWestmom · 14/09/2019 19:11

I don't know. I took the boys and was really Hmm at all the adults having photos. And then Jack Skellington rocked up and I was like a teen fan girl again.

NearlyGranny · 14/09/2019 19:18

JacquesHammer, the Disney shop I was in was in a UK capital and this was less than a month ago. I wouldn't know about Paris. I found the lack of pricing really annoying as I was with a child who had £10 to spend and was helping them work out what they could afford (virtually nothing). There was certainly nothing at pocket money prices but obviously the in-resort shops are different. I think my experience with a disappointed child has probably soured my views on Disney still further!Wink

The nearby Hamleys made us pick things off the shelf to find prices, too, but the Lego shop was refreshingly clear with its pricing.

leftovercoffeecake · 14/09/2019 19:18

My boyfriend and I love visiting Disneyland and we don’t have kids! We went at Christmas time last year and it was magical!

I love the rides (especially as someone who isn’t into crazy thrill rides, there’s lots to do).

There’s lots of shows to see. The fireworks. The parades.

Everyone is so friendly.

I always feel so happy and carefree in Disneyland. It’s like getting to be a child again!

Different people enjoy different things at the end of the day.

scarbados · 14/09/2019 19:29

I'd love to visit one of the Disney parks but I'm a bit bewildered by a colleague of my DH's who is obsessed by Piglet and owns a collection of Piglet t-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies. She wears one for work every day. She's 60.

SimonJT · 14/09/2019 19:32

I’ve been to Disney in Paris, Orlando, California and Japan.

They were all great fun, that’s what it’s about, not sight seeing etc, just having fun.

LemonScentedStickyBat · 14/09/2019 19:38

I love Disney World and also:
Love sightseeing in a city
Love lying on beaches and swimming in the sea
Love ancient ruins
Love cruises
Absolutely despise camping

It’s almost like you can enjoy lots of different experiences

It’s really not all or nothing

dollydaydream114 · 14/09/2019 19:40

I’m not a Disney fan but I can totally see why people would love it. And all the people I know who do love it love lots of other things as well.

I find the ‘Why would you want to look at a Disney castle when you can look at real things?’ question really odd. Do you refuse to read any fiction on the grounds that you could read non-fiction instead? Do you think it’s weird to go to the National Portrait Gallery because you could just stand outside and look at people’s faces? Do you shun all films that aren’t documentaries?

All human beings like to escape into a fictional world now and again and immerse themselves in complete escapism. For some people, that is Disney.

Reallynowdear · 14/09/2019 19:48

It's bloody fantastic.

However, I completely understand those who don't share my opinion.

I can't bear horror films, others love them.

I'm old, have never watched an action/cars/whatever film in decades but OMG the Transformers ride at Universal was amazing. I realise this is not Disney but I don't have time to explain my love for WDW.

BogglesGoggles · 14/09/2019 19:52

Not everyone is cultured. Luck of the draw. I’m sure some people find Disney just as thrilling as Rembrandt or Tudor castles or whatever it is that floats your boat.

DownstairsMixUp · 14/09/2019 19:53

I get it as everyone is different. However, I fail to see anyone agreeing Ques are fun 😩😂

BogglesGoggles · 14/09/2019 19:55

@dollydaydream114 that’s not the same thing though is it, all of you’re examples are referring to art forms as opposed to replicas. A better example would be asking why someone would want to read jilly cooper when they could read the bronte sisters or go to an art gallery when they could scroll through instagram.

Witchofzog · 14/09/2019 19:57

Is anybody else seeing a Disney ad on here right now? Smile

Reallybadidea · 14/09/2019 19:57

My sister in law and her DH went to Disneyland for their honeymoon. Not gonna lie, I thought that was weird.

Uniformuniformuniform · 14/09/2019 19:59

To feel like a kid again. For 1 week not be so responsible and stressed. Any just why not!
