To ask you whether my husband needs his gammy swollen foot looked at?

DH has just presented me with his foot. It appears very swollen and when he wiggles his toes it makes a weird crunching/clicking noise. He can walk on it and has been cycling to work this week so it can’t be that bad. However it seems very swollen and feels hot. He says it is sore and he doesn’t know how he did it but that he thinks he must have done something to it last weekend.

Does it need an X-ray? I’m asking selfishly because I can’t face sitting in A&E but it also looks really dodgy.

Is that a bite on the top? Could be infected tick or spider bite?

eosmum · 13/09/2019 22:18

Minor injuries? That looks nasty and I’d be worried about it being hot.

littlecabbage · 13/09/2019 22:18

If he isn't in much pain and is well in himself, I'd leave it tonight and see a walk-in clinic tomorrow.

Hawkmoth · 13/09/2019 22:19

It'll be right, worst case scenario he can get a prosthetic to clip onto his bike...

TokyoSushi · 13/09/2019 22:19

Ooh, well it doesn't look ideal...

But if its been like that since the weekend thdn one more night won't do much harm, maybe a trip to minor injuries or something in the morning but I wouldn't brave A&E now

Freaking0ut · 13/09/2019 22:19

He’s just told me it does hurt a little bit when he walks. It’s not a bite on the top, I think it’s coincidental, he scraped his foot on something. Shall I send him for an X-ray tomorrow then?

Haggisfish · 13/09/2019 22:20

I’d phone 111

Freaking0ut · 13/09/2019 22:21

@Hawkmoth Grin I like your thinking

Crikey, OP- how did you go a week without noticing that? How did he fit it into his shoes?

I'd definitely get it looked at tomorrow- he might just have a stupidly high pain threshold and it be broken.

NoSauce · 13/09/2019 22:21

I’d get that looked at.

JoanieCash · 13/09/2019 22:22

Looks more like a cellulitis- there’s a break in the skin. If he has a temperature or unwell (or any underlying conditions), would go in tonight. Otherwise to a minor injuries unit tomorrow....

LemonTT · 13/09/2019 22:27

I would assume he experienced some trauma and has ligament damage. Unless there are other symptoms or the source of the injury is unknown, rest and ibuprofen. Mine looked exactly the same when I twisted it. Bruised and swollen.

If worried call 111

Freaking0ut · 13/09/2019 22:32

Interesting about ligament damage. It seems odd that he has managed fine all week and it can’t be that excruciating or he would t have been able to walk. It just looks quite alarming and if it is broken what would they do anyway?

@JoanieCash apparently he scraped it on a bolt at the swimming pool but it was hurting before then 🤷🏻‍♀️

is he human?
Feet look like Patrick Duffy in the man from Atlantis
or some kind of alien encounter

peachgreen · 13/09/2019 22:33

How's his temperature?

ALoadOfTwaddle · 13/09/2019 22:34

if it is broken what would they do anyway

I imagine they'd check the bones are still aligned and rig it up with some sort of support to keep them that way.

NoNoOk · 13/09/2019 22:35

On a separate note OP, where are you from? I am the only person in my world that uses the word gammy and I miss it! It reminds me of home Smile

Freaking0ut · 13/09/2019 22:36

@15thOctober2019 I think he is human but his feet are quite large ridiculous

He’s just told me that even if it is broken it’ll be fine and has admitted he’s worried that they’ll make him wear a special shoe 🙄 ffs.

Call 111. They’ll be able to tell you whether to go to Minor Injuries, or to an out of hours GP (for which they can give you an appointment)

justilou1 · 13/09/2019 22:37

Sounds infected. Is it hot & red?

bionicnemonic · 13/09/2019 22:37

It’s possible it took a while for an infection to get a hold so it’s only just really starting up.
www.nhsinform.scot/illnesses-and-conditions/skin-hair-and-nails/cellulitis
I’d be concerned about that. Imagine it was your foot? No chance he has diabetes or other reason he’d not feel pain so readily in his feet?

Iamtooknackeredtorun · 13/09/2019 22:38

Does it feel different to the touch? Any sign of a temperature?

I wound get it checked ASAP actually

Lunafortheloveogod · 13/09/2019 22:39

Ah just take him out back n chop it off.. how the hell has he been getting shoes on? What’s his reaction if you poke it.. under his toes look ok not bruised or dark?
I’d get it checked but no need for a&e immediately if he can feel you touching his toes (have him close his eyes n tickle them with no warning) and there’s no blackening/odd bruising (signs of circulation problems).. and the usual if he has a high temp uncontrollable shivering things just drag him by the ear.

MILHouse · 13/09/2019 22:39

Sorry but those are the weirdest feet I’ve ever seen!! (Unhelpful, sorry! Minor injuries tomorrow I think).

Freaking0ut · 13/09/2019 22:42

@bionicnemonic Hmm it does seem to fit that list of symptoms for cellulitis. It is tender and a bit squishy when I poke it.

I think he does have quite a high pain threshold but def not diabetic or anything like that.
