To ask you whether my husband needs his gammy swollen foot looked at?

DH has just presented me with his foot. It appears very swollen and when he wiggles his toes it makes a weird crunching/clicking noise. He can walk on it and has been cycling to work this week so it can’t be that bad. However it seems very swollen and feels hot. He says it is sore and he doesn’t know how he did it but that he thinks he must have done something to it last weekend.

Does it need an X-ray? I’m asking selfishly because I can’t face sitting in A&E but it also looks really dodgy.

Fingers for toes Wink

I think 111 might be a good idea.

7to25 · 13/09/2019 22:43

The best case ever of finger-toes.

BustedDreams · 13/09/2019 22:44

I don’t know why but now I’m fancying some Monster Munch Grin ... not helpful sorry.

Freaking0ut · 13/09/2019 22:44

@Lunafortheloveogod haha I will get the rusty saw out.

@MILHouse they are just massive feet! He is a big guy and if they were any smaller he would fall over Grin I don’t think my camera work has done them any favours either.

If he’s been cycling/working like that all see then it’s nit an accident or emergency. Call out of hours first thing, see what they say.

Peterpiperpickedwrongagain · 13/09/2019 22:47

see then it’s nit - week then it’s not

TickleMyFanny · 13/09/2019 22:48

Check out those tingers!!!!

HappyHammy · 13/09/2019 22:48

If he knocked it on a bolt that could cause an infection. Its swollen, squishy, hot and painful. I would at least call 111.

Writersblock2 · 13/09/2019 22:49

I agree with the cellulitis diagnosis. I’ve seen a few people with it. He needs to go get sorted ASAP!

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 13/09/2019 22:49

That needs seeing first thing on the morning and I'm the first person to say wait and see usually!

I say gammy tooGrin

WhatTiggersDoBest · 13/09/2019 22:49

He scraped it on a bolt in the swimming pool? Was this a metal bolt? Is he up to date with his tetanus? If it's more than 10 years since he had a tetanus vaccine, he should get one asap if nothing else.

tuberr0se · 13/09/2019 22:49

If you press the top of his foot does it take a while for the skin/tissue to return to normal? I would def call 111

Freaking0ut · 13/09/2019 22:50

I agree. I think around here the only way to get it x-ray is to go to A&E or Minor Injuries Unit. I’m not really sure though...

Yes, if it’s hot to the touch, it needs checking now and not later. That definitely sounds like cellulitis and it can go wrong (you can’t believe the amount of people I know who ignored cellulitis and ended up with sepsis - the number should be 0, but I seem to know a lot of stubborn people with high pain thresholds). If it was just swollen, maybe it could wait for walk-in but would still need x-ray before the weekend was out, but the heat means it needs checking now and probably more than an x-ray.

Leah2005 · 13/09/2019 22:51

I'd want to get it checked for sepsis. My friend had a slight knock to her hand and was kept in hospital for three nights on intravenous antibiotics.

FindusCrispyPancakes · 13/09/2019 22:51

I never go to a+e, but looking at that foot I would, it's far from normal. I'd just chose my time to go wisely though.

Nat6999 · 13/09/2019 22:54

Could it be a stress fracture? You can get these just from walking around. I would try & get an Xray asap.

Mascarponeandwine · 13/09/2019 22:56

Cellulitis, needs antibiotics. Get yee to A&E and you might get away with oral abs and not iv. He shouldn’t have left it this long though.

Freaking0ut · 13/09/2019 22:58

Oh gawd now I’m worried. He only told me about scraping it at the pool this evening (yes, it was a metal bolt to the pp who asked). He thinks I’m being ridiculous. Will get him to call 111 in the morning.

Think it needs seeing tonight op. It doesnt look good and if septis can spread quick. If broken needs scrapping. Please get medical help

nocoolnamesleft · 13/09/2019 23:06

Hard to tell from the pictures, but I'd suspect cellulitis. Which isn't really a wait until tomorrow problem. Leaving cellulitis untreated has an annoying tendency to result in admissions for IV antibiotics, where orals would have done if caught early.

CheeseStraws · 13/09/2019 23:08

I had something very, very similar and went to out of hours where I was given antibiotics and I think it went down in my notes as cellulitis (which can be serious).

justilou1 · 14/09/2019 01:26

Nurse here... if he scraped it, it is more likely to be an infection of some kind. It is hard to tel from the photo, but it looks red, swollen and tight, which does suggest movement into the tissues surrounding the wound. (Cellulitis.) I would suspect that he needs antibiotics. In the meantime, I would also recommend bathing in warm, very salty water to stimulate the blood supply and if the wound is still open maybe kill off some of the bugs.

SemperIdem · 14/09/2019 01:32

I think his toes are longer than my arms!

In all seriousness, his foot looks very like mine did when I had cellulitis. He should definitely have it looked at.
