To ask you whether my husband needs his gammy swollen foot looked at?

DH has just presented me with his foot. It appears very swollen and when he wiggles his toes it makes a weird crunching/clicking noise. He can walk on it and has been cycling to work this week so it can’t be that bad. However it seems very swollen and feels hot. He says it is sore and he doesn’t know how he did it but that he thinks he must have done something to it last weekend.

Does it need an X-ray? I’m asking selfishly because I can’t face sitting in A&E but it also looks really dodgy.

He’s got very feminine feet

steff13 · 14/09/2019 01:40

I think he should go to the doctor, and also he has monkey toes. 🐒

managedmis · 14/09/2019 01:45

It's definitely swollen

MrsMozartMkII · 14/09/2019 01:46

Sounds like he needs to hop off and have it checked by a medic soonest.

Hope he's okay.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 14/09/2019 01:48

It looks like my foot did a few weeks ago when I sprained it. But I certainly knew about it when I did it as it was absolute agony! I would go to minor injuries if the swelling doesn't subside. It's normal for it to be warm if it's swollen as there's more blood there at the site of the injury. It's not nexsssrily a bad thing.

I had something like this before from a scratch on my leg and the redness travelled up my leg to my groin. I then started having flu like symptoms and was so disorientated that I started hallucinating. Turns out it was cellulitis and I was admitted for IV antibiotics. It was very scary. I would get him to see someone asap.

1forAll74 · 14/09/2019 02:11

I think you should fully bandage his foot up, then we don't have to view those awful long toes. I don't much like feet, although I do have two of my own,!

ClaireElizabethBeauchampFraser · 14/09/2019 02:24

Anyone else looking at their own long slender feet, complete with long toes and thinking- wth why are people being weird about long toes?

My poor Mum (diabetic) developed cellulitis in her foot and now has a partial amputation that has taken months to heal! Please don’t ignore a skin infection!

RightYesButNo · 14/09/2019 02:53

@Freaking0ut - I see you’ve chosen to call 111 in the morning. I still would have gotten it checked today, but understand you can’t force your husband to do anything. However, please be on the lookout for these:

  1. Fever.
  2. Him acting confused.
  3. Redness, heat, or red streaks spreading up the leg.
  4. Him not acting “right in himself” (you know what that means as his wife, as you know him).
  5. Vomiting, headache, chills, or other “sick” symptoms.

If any of these happen, do not wait, do not call 111 - go straight to A&E.

BustedDreams · 14/09/2019 07:03

@Freaking0ut how’s the patient this morning? Hope he gets sorted and that his foot gets better.

Iamtooknackeredtorun · 14/09/2019 07:23

I echo the concerns about how quickly these things can escalate. My mother had necrotising fasciitis which started fairly innocuously. Almost certainly that isn’t the case here but seemingly minor things do sometimes need looking at. I hope he’s a bit better this morning.

Freaking0ut · 14/09/2019 10:11

@BustedDreams he has survived the night Grin Thanks everyone for your suggestions (and helpful insights around the overall look of DH’s weird feet claws). Will encourage him to get it checked 👍

Also big up to everyone who uses ‘gammy’ in their everyday vocabulary 😎

Quartz2208 · 14/09/2019 10:15

Yep needs checking

And tell him it’s not big nor clever to avoid such things and try to soldier on!

JuniperSling · 14/09/2019 10:53

Maybe it's gout. You can get it on the top of the foot like that and it comes on very suddenly.

wowfudge · 14/09/2019 11:04

That is cellulitis by the look of it - classic case of injury breaking the skin and bacteria getting in. The consequences can be extremely serious and it is definitely not normal to have such a swollen foot. There are no extra points for soldiering on and not getting it seen to.

CheeseStraws · 14/09/2019 13:03

I hate these posts where posters with a medical background say something is urgent and OP doesn't see the urgency - why post in the first place as it just stresses everyone out.

Freaking0ut · 14/09/2019 13:25

@cheesestraws I do see the urgency thanks and am very grateful for input from people. Im the sort of person who worries about wasting time and resources etc etc and that was why I was interested in what other people would do on this occasion. He is absolutely fine today but will be going to have it checked. Thank you.

What was the outcome @Freaking0ut? Hope his foot is on the mend.
