To want to throw myself under a bus just to escape this pain?

I had emergency dentist a week ago and ended up getting a back tooth removed. It took 40 minutes and was so infected the anaesthetic never really took properly so it was agony.

Monday comes and I'm climbing the walls in pain. I have dry socket. Dentist cleaned it and put some gauze over it plus gave me antibiotics. Tuesday back to dentist I can't function, not sleeping or eating said he could see the swelling and pus but it'll take time. Today back to dentist (different one) because I still can't sleep with the pain it's in my ear and down my jaw bone. She's says there's no swelling or pus (I can literally see, feel and taste it) and won't do anything.

I'm in constant tears, have lost half a stone in a week and I'm so so tired but can't get any respite from the pain.

I can only take paracetamol. Is there anything else I can do to escape this hell??

That sounds awful.

Apparently clove oil is amazing for toothpain if you can't have painkillers. I'd get advice before putting it on a potentially infected socket though. Homebargains have it in for £2 so not too expensive.

Have you got someone with you? To watch for infection and to help you get stuff?

reefedsail · 13/09/2019 19:17

I can sympathise as I once went to A&E with tooth pain. Blush

Apparently antibiotics take ages to work because of the poor blood supply to the infected area.

Things that helped me a bit were warm salty mouth washes every 30 mins or so. holding a mouthful of water to take the pressure off and mega doses of pain killers. Have you some paramol or similar?

PicsInRed · 13/09/2019 19:19

Have you tried a private dentist?

Ihavehadenoughalready · 13/09/2019 19:19

I second the clove oil.

Source: dry socket post wisdom teeth removal.

Dentist stuck it in....immediate relief.

NeverSurrender · 13/09/2019 19:21

Hold warm salty water in your mouth- I went through the same and it was the only relief I could get.

WombatStewForTea · 13/09/2019 19:21

Oh I feel your pain OP I had the same a few years ago. I remember thinking at the time if I could I'd have thrown myself in front of a bus. How long have you had it? I didn't sleep a wink for 5 days as the pain was so bad then one morning woke up on the sofa and the pain went completely. It's horrid. Nobody will give you any strong pain killer either. The one random thing I found that worked was ice cold water/ice. No idea why but a mouthful stopped the pain until the water warmed to body temperature then repeat. Did mean I went for a wee every half an hour but was so worth it.
Hope you're through the other side soon. It's literally the worst pain Flowers

MyDcAreMarvel · 13/09/2019 19:21

Why can you only take paracetamol?

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 13/09/2019 19:21

I knew this would be teeth based before I even opened it!

I had an abscess on a wisefom tooth whilst I was pregnant with my eldest. Could only take paracetamol. Ended up in hospital with the pain. I was clawing my own skin off. It was far worse than labour.

Go back to another emergency dentist tomorrow. Is there really no other painkiller you can take? Clove oil does work to some extent but really you need drugs. A bag of ice on the face helps too, alternated with a hot water bottle.

ChatNicknameAlreadyInUse · 13/09/2019 19:27

I tried clove oil to not much effect. Have been using corsodyl mouthwash which gives me a tiny bit of relief. Can only take paracetamol due to allergies to ibuprofen, aspirin and codeine. Have tried ice and heat and salt water rinses too. Will try emergency dentist again tomorrow just need some relief tonight if at all possible. Would literally sacrifice my first born at this point in time Sad

Can't you take stronger painkillers? My GP prescribed morphine for a severe dental infection that lasted 6 weeks until the hospital operated on me. I'd also had 4 different lots of antibiotics during that time too. It was a grey area but the Maxillo Facial Consultant said my GP needed to mange my pain. You have my sympathies as I've never expect anything like it, I was suicidal the pain was so severe.

dorothysredshoes · 13/09/2019 19:33

My husband had agonising toothache on holiday in Gibraltar, he went to A&E and they gave him a pethidene injection in his backside , it really helped. Hope your pain goes away soon x

Solitarycaddis · 13/09/2019 19:42

Are you anywhere near South London? If so, King's College and Guys Hospitals have emergency dental clinics although I think for Kings you now need to make an appt

Did they not dress it? Our dentist dresses it with foul tasting gunge (that numbs it) its vile but works

ChatNicknameAlreadyInUse · 13/09/2019 20:10

Yeah they dressed it with medicated gauze and it's not done a thing for it that was on Monday.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/09/2019 20:44

Could you use the mouthwash that's for throat infections? Difflam? It is an anaesthetic. Or anbesol liquid? Both of those would numb the area, it's just whether they would actually be safe to use I'm not sure of

Hope you get some relief soon, you must be in agony Thanks

TheDarkPassenger · 13/09/2019 20:46

There are plenty of other painkillers besides those, I have medical allergies too and chronic pain. I would ask for more!

How allergic are you? I’m anaphylactic allergic to brufen but aspirin I have a moderate allergy and they have given me it before when it was needed as the reaction was less brutal than the affliction. Have you maybe spoken to a gp about that as an option?

hiphopchick · 13/09/2019 20:48

@ChatNicknameAlreadyInUse

I am so sorry for you. Maybe naproxen or cocodomol?

Feel well soon.

Wishing and praying you wake up with very little pain tomorrow morning!

BreakfastAtLitanies · 13/09/2019 20:53

Hi OP I really feel for you. Never had dry socket but had infected tooth-hole-gum thing and it's agony, can't imagine dry socket on top of that.

It goes without saying but if you smoke, stop immediately because it will take ages to start recovering.

I second the opinion of going back and asking for more painkillers of a different kind. Naproxen may be good

NextTrainGoesToBEROWRA · 13/09/2019 21:01

Oh how horrid, you poor thing.

Obviously keep up the regular swilling with warm salty water.

Can you get soluble paracetamol? When you take it, hold and swish each mouthful slowly so it goes right to the affected area, before swallowing. Make sure it’s right after one of your salt rinses.

Good old vitamin C and zinc will help with healing too. Oh and Manuka honey! And chicken bone broth!

EmAreSea · 13/09/2019 21:18

Can you not take paramol? It’s great for dental pain.

maddening · 13/09/2019 21:25

Tyrozets (sp?) are antibiotic and anaesthetic - you could suck it so it sits on the afternoon area?

Notthebradybunch · 13/09/2019 21:30

After a week the antibiotics should have kicked in by now, my dentist once took me off amoxicillin and gave me something much stronger as they weren't working, feel for you OP!

slipperywhensparticus · 13/09/2019 21:40

You need the antibiotics that make your pee go black from what I remember

Mammylamb · 13/09/2019 21:42

@ChatNicknameAlreadyInUse. Call nhs 24 . I had this before and they sent me to ninewells (the local hospital) as they have an emergency dentist there
