To want to throw myself under a bus just to escape this pain?

I had emergency dentist a week ago and ended up getting a back tooth removed. It took 40 minutes and was so infected the anaesthetic never really took properly so it was agony.

Monday comes and I'm climbing the walls in pain. I have dry socket. Dentist cleaned it and put some gauze over it plus gave me antibiotics. Tuesday back to dentist I can't function, not sleeping or eating said he could see the swelling and pus but it'll take time. Today back to dentist (different one) because I still can't sleep with the pain it's in my ear and down my jaw bone. She's says there's no swelling or pus (I can literally see, feel and taste it) and won't do anything.

I'm in constant tears, have lost half a stone in a week and I'm so so tired but can't get any respite from the pain.

I can only take paracetamol. Is there anything else I can do to escape this hell??

Rinse with warm salty water for a minimum of 40 seconds every half hour, paying particular attention to area that's infected.

Keep your head elevated including when asleep, laying down will send all the blood to your head increasing the pain.

Remain still and calm as much as possible, pacing the room, going up and down stairs, basically any movement will increase your blood pressure therefore causing more pain.

Cold compresses on the outside of your face for 15 minutes every half an hour.

Keep on top of paracetamol. Speak with pharmacist they may have something stronger they can sell you.

Eat soft foods at room temperature nothing hot or cold or it will aggravate the area more.

I'd stop using corsodyl and replace it with the salt water, just as effective at removing infection, far less likely to cause adverse effects.

Buy some Ashton and parsons teething granules, all major super markets and chemists stock them. Pour the contents directly on the dry socket.

Get another appointment with emergency dentist to have the alvogel changed (clove tasting dressing)

(Former harley street dentist )

Also ask the dentist to prescribe metronidazole providing you don't have an allergy it's the most effective antibiotic for this type of infection

Teenagemaw · 13/09/2019 21:58

Call nhs 24 they have ooh dentists who cam help even just by advice over the phone x make the call because once i didnt and ended up with a big swollen jaw infection my dentist told me off for not calling.

diddlesticks · 13/09/2019 22:00

No advice but I think @gigglesandshits has it covered. Just want to say that this sounds absolutely horrific and I truly hope it eases for you soon.

SisyphusDad · 13/09/2019 22:06

This might give you some momentary relief.

"We were beginning to understand why, in pre-anaesthetic days, the Bible had stipulated that suicide was a sin. Anything other than the prospect of eternal damnation, and the human race would probably have done away with itself at the first sign of the dentist."

IceQueenCometh · 13/09/2019 22:09

You can get paraetamol and codeine over the counter and you can alternate with nurofen so get all that on board. Ring 111 and get them to prioritise you at your GP and get in there asap and get POM strength painkiller. That sounds horrible OP, no wonder you feel so terrible

PointlessUsername · 13/09/2019 22:10

Dry socket is fucking brutal, poor you Flowers

Try Orajel or call 111 to see an emergancy dentist the infection may have spread elsewhere?

gigglesandshits · 13/09/2019 22:12

@IceQueenCometh op is allergic to ibuprofen and Codeine

Bitchfeatures · 13/09/2019 22:12

Go to A&E or atleast a walk in.
That amount of is not normal, get a second opinion!

forkfun · 13/09/2019 22:12

Go to your GP for proper painkillers. I had some tramadol for a excruciatingly infected tooth. Dentist can't prescribe it though.

Idratherhaveacupoftea · 13/09/2019 22:20

As a former dental nurse,I've seen patients threatening to chop their own heads off because of a dry socket. They are excruciatingly painful.

Wayfair2020 · 13/09/2019 22:24

I'm so sorry for you. I have been where you are and the pain is totally indescribable unless you have experienced. I went to a&e for the pain and they were more than happy to help - they gave me morphine and diclofenic (up the bum) and it did take the edge off . I also found holding an ice pack against my face took my mind off it slightly, as did rocking (I'm not joking).

Please visit a&e or a walk in it out of hours for pain relief. Paracetamol will not touch it.

What antibiotics are you on? Metronidazole was the one that cleared my infection xx

Mayhemmumma · 13/09/2019 22:27

Dry socket is by far the most painful experience I have ever had. (2 unassisted home births were better)
Go back to dentist. Take far more drugs than paracetamol and know yanbu.

BeneathTheMist · 13/09/2019 22:33

Call your local hospital with a Maxillo Facial dept. See if you can get hold of the on-call max fax doctor. Good luck.

Ash39 · 13/09/2019 22:35

Op, phone NHS 24 ( dental triage when asked) and get an emergency appointment for your local centre in the morning. You may need stronger/different antibiotics.
I'd resist the temptation to put anything near the socket, such as clove oil/teething granules etc as it's an open wound and could cause a new infection.
They can flush the area out with corsodyl and place a new alvogyl pack. Sometimes helps. Another technique used these days is to numb up the area again and abrade the surface so a new clot forms.

Ice pack and salt rinse or difflam mouthwash helps as well.

Duvetdazed · 13/09/2019 23:01

I was in agony after a similar dental treatment. Felt like I was being hit in the face with a metal bar.

One thing that did bring almost immediate relief was standing in a hot shower and just letting the water spray my face. It's temporary relief but it's worth it.

FuckFacePlatapus · 13/09/2019 23:12

We see lots of people in A&E with unbearable dental pain. Please go down if you have exhausted all other options and ask for some strong Analgesia.

WindowsSmindows · 13/09/2019 23:20

You have to believe that tomorrow a dentist will give you an injection in the correct place and you will not be in this pain.
I have been where you are and too thought of jumping before a truck.
Just hang in there, the pain will go.

mawof3soontobe · 13/09/2019 23:28

Hi OP, I was in this exact position posting on here just a few months ago. I'm in Scotland too and our NHS24 doesn't have out of hours dentist's anymore either (unless we are in the same area). I would 100% go to A&E and explain how debilitating the pain is. They have to manage your symptoms until you can be seen by a dentist. I've had three children with no pain relief and I've seriously had the scariest thoughts ever when in dental pain! I hope you get some relief soon Gin

inlalalalaland · 13/09/2019 23:29

Do you have clove at home, OP? Keep it in your mouth next to painful tooth. It may taste a little weird but it will help with pain. Or use warm salty water as suggested in PP. If nothing works, call NHS emergency.

Don't take too many pain medication - paracetamol, codeine together without checking with pharmacist.

areyoubeingserviced · 13/09/2019 23:29

Can you gargle a bit of whisky or rum around the tooth area?

SamanthaJayne4 · 13/09/2019 23:32

Totally agree with gigglesandshits. I recently had a bad infection where a bit of tooth got left behind after an extraction which was not recent. The infection was tracking across the roof of my mouth. The pain was awful and I couldn't wear my partial denture due to the swelling. I cannot have anything penicillin related or erythromycin. I had metranidazol and it began to work after a couple of days. It was very effective and I had no side effects. Hope you get some effective treatment soon OP.

Pikapikachooo · 13/09/2019 23:32

If you can’t get a GP appt get yourself the strongest OTC possible

Co- codamol
Strong ibuprofen (don’t overdose please )

I once went to a and e for
Sever pain and they have me
Morphine

There is a tome and a place for strong opiates and this is it

Sending healing Flowers and it WILL heal

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 13/09/2019 23:34

Get codeine from an online pharmacy (the legit ones with a GP you speak to) would be my recommendation. I did this last year for slipped disc and of was surprisingly easy. Cost about £80 but worth it

Notthebradybunch · 13/09/2019 23:35

Metronidazole! That's the one I was switched to, try and get an OOH''s appointment asap.
