To want to throw myself under a bus just to escape this pain?

I had emergency dentist a week ago and ended up getting a back tooth removed. It took 40 minutes and was so infected the anaesthetic never really took properly so it was agony.

Monday comes and I'm climbing the walls in pain. I have dry socket. Dentist cleaned it and put some gauze over it plus gave me antibiotics. Tuesday back to dentist I can't function, not sleeping or eating said he could see the swelling and pus but it'll take time. Today back to dentist (different one) because I still can't sleep with the pain it's in my ear and down my jaw bone. She's says there's no swelling or pus (I can literally see, feel and taste it) and won't do anything.

I'm in constant tears, have lost half a stone in a week and I'm so so tired but can't get any respite from the pain.

I can only take paracetamol. Is there anything else I can do to escape this hell??

Bless you. I have had bad wisdom teeth pain and abscesses in the past and can relate. I used to find paracetamol/ibruprofen combination (max dose of each) and a hot water bottle right where it hurts provides enough relief to allow me to sleep about two hours at a time (until the painkillers were wearing off/bottle cooling). It took the edge off enough to function though.

And I second going to another dentist. If for nothing else then prescription painkillers.

Writersblock2 · 13/09/2019 23:39

Sorry, just read the pain med allergies. Definitely get back to doctor!

FuckFacePlatapus · 13/09/2019 23:39

I think hands down tooth ache is literally the worst pain i have ever ever had, more so over labour and a collapsed lung needing an emergency drain put in. Awful awful.

timshelthechoice · 13/09/2019 23:54

I'd go to A&E.

crimsonlake · 14/09/2019 00:10

I really feel for you, I have had toothache recently and it is the worst pain. I am praying you get some relief soon.

gigglesandshits · 14/09/2019 08:00

Heat in this situation will make the symptoms worse, it will give you temporary relief but once it is removed the pain will increase. Cool is the best option.

Greyhound22 · 14/09/2019 08:03

I had a dry socket after having a wisdom tooth out. I have never experienced pain like it.

I went back to the dentist at the hospital though and they filled it and the relief was instant. Can you get some co-codamol?

Bluebelldaisy · 14/09/2019 08:12

Colgate peroxil is better then any other mouthwash for pain

BettysLeftTentacle · 14/09/2019 08:21

I work in a very overstretched underfunded hospital and I wouldn’t say this lightly but I have also suffered with horrendous wisdom tooth pain (worse that childbirth by a country mile!) and I think you should go rob A&E to at the very least, get some really good pain relief to get you to the next dentist appointment. They won’t mind, they know how unbelievably awful it is.

bananacakerox · 14/09/2019 08:22

How are you this morning OP? Feel for you, I've had a few abscesses and that's pure intense agony in such a small localised area.

Hope you've had some rest and that the ABs start working.

BettysLeftTentacle · 14/09/2019 08:22

Dearly me ‘go rob’ should be ‘go to’

Don’t rob A&E. I know you probably feel like it would be a good idea though.

HearMeSnore · 14/09/2019 08:33

I sympathise - dry socket is the most evil pain. Makes you want to slam your neck in a door.

Dentist should be packing the socket with medicated dressing, every day if necessary. They can prescribe strong painkillers, too, but I'm not sure what the options are if you're allergic to codeine. Paracetamol alone won't touch it. Can you take tramadol?

Orajel helped me a little bit. Took the edge off the pain for a few minutes at a time until it got washed away.

ChatNicknameAlreadyInUse · 14/09/2019 11:21

Wow so many replies thank you all and sympathies to those who know this pain Flowers

To make matters worse my DD is in the children's hospital an hour away from home and she's been here for a week so I'm trying to deal with all that on top of all my own pain.

I'm going to ring emergency dentists when my husband can get here to sit with our daughter and see if they can take me as a visitor to the city. I can get to Boots in a wee while for orajel and Colgate peroxil. I may rob A&E WinkGrin

Will see GP on Monday if emergency dentist doesn't solve the pain.

Oh Op, you have my every sympathy Sad
I had this exact thing a while back and was seriously considering smashing my head into the wall to try and knock myself out. Utterly indescribable pain.
I ended up at a private ooh dentist getting the antibiotics the nhs dentist said I didn’t need Hmm (infection had spread right along my jaw) and having the whole area shot full of local anaesthetic just for some relief and so I could sleep.
Best £90 I’ve ever spent. (A lot of money obv —but I wld have robbed an old lady for it at that point—
I nearly proposed to the dentist.
Good luckFlowers

OrangeJustice · 14/09/2019 11:40

I think you should go rob A&E to at the very least Grin

DracarysThis · 14/09/2019 11:54

Ask for Difflam oral rinse at a pharmacy - my max/fax surgeon gave me it after a tongue biopsy, it is an anti-inflammatory and at least meant I could eat. Can you take tramadol? Maybe cough ask a friend who has some?

Zippy17 · 14/09/2019 11:57

I would go to a, e, I almost ended up with septicaemia with botch Debtal work in a crown, and c-diff from all the antibiotics I had to take to clear the antibiotics!

Ticklemeelmo · 14/09/2019 12:01

I had this after a wisdom tooth out- the dentist should flush it out with water.

You could buy a water pik (water flosser) to flush out the puss and keep it clean, they're excellent. Clove oil is also very good to put on after you've cleaned it as it has a numbing effect. Boots sell it

BettysLeftTentacle · 14/09/2019 14:23

I must admit, there have been a few times in my life when robbing my Trust’s A&E would’ve been really helpful....

MockingJay27 · 14/09/2019 15:16

I had dry socket a couple of years ago it is very painful,
You need to be doing salt water rinses at least 5 times a day to keep it really clean and the salt will help heal.
Unfortunately until the gum has grown over the nerve their isn’t much you can do apart from keeping up rinses, I think mine began to ease after a week or so but it felt like forever. I really feel for you

PotterHead1985 · 14/09/2019 15:30

I had the same tooth out a week ago. I feel you.

FuckFacePlatapus · 16/09/2019 00:04

Hi @ChatNicknameAlreadyInUse how is your pain? Hopefully its under control !Thanks

Dita73 · 16/09/2019 00:17

When this happens to me,I stick a pin or needle in it to release the pus. The relief from that horrific pain is wonderful. It’s probably not the most sensible thing to do but it’s always worked for me
