Eek. Hate them!

I saw a false widow in a nearby town the other week - in Scotland! Thought they were only in the south of England.

Read up and apparently they've established themselves around here too and are being driven inside with all the rain we are having.

...think I'll move further north xD

YABU. Get some counselling.

YABU. Get some counselling.

Why would the OP need counselling? They only asked a question!

I think they’re bigger this year due to the mild winter and warm summer OP. We’ve not been troubled with them indoors this year but I spray the house with Indorex to keep them away. It's mating season for spiders and that’s probably why you see more then normal.

finnmcool · 13/09/2019 17:58

My home invasion has started.
They are beefy fuckers this year.

IndieTara · 13/09/2019 18:01

There's a huge one somewhere In my house too.
It ran out from the quilt cover when I was changing the bed.
I screamed. It ran and now I can't find it anywhere.
My house is spider central

theendofsummer · 13/09/2019 18:02

MaryBerriesNiece that's a flea spray?

It works on spiders too I keep a few cellar spiders around to eat the big ones but I think my cat has eaten them this year as well as everything else in the house

Anyone want to borrow a cat or three? They love eating them 🤢

MaryBerriesNiece · 13/09/2019 18:08

@thendofsummer it works for any crawling insects. I really don’t like spiders and it’s the only thing I’ve found that works. I’ve tried conkers, various essential oils etc and they still came in.

Cakeorchocolate · 13/09/2019 18:08

We've had so many big spiders in our house I was dreaming about them last night!

The cats have found most of them before we have, mostly during the night. Just keep finding huge dead spiders in the morning.

ajandjjmum · 13/09/2019 18:14

Get some conkers!

30to50FeralHogs · 13/09/2019 18:18

Yup, two effing huge ones this week. I tried to set the cat on them but she just objected to being picked up and grumbled at me. I haaate spiders with a passion (thanks for not posting photos!) and they absolutely scare the shit out of me. Can't wait for winter.

LakieLady · 13/09/2019 18:19

There's a whopper currently residing in my bedroom.

I'm thinking of getting it a collar and lead, so I can take it for a walk.

They do seem unusually big this year. It must be hellish for arachnophobes.

I've also noticed that all the wood pigeons seem exceedingly plump. We have a pair nesting in the garden. They're such fat fuckers they walk as much as they fly, I reckon they have trouble taking off.

Mollypolly2610 · 13/09/2019 18:20

What are the spiders that look like a portobello mushroom with legs. I live rural and am dreading them this year.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 13/09/2019 18:24

Saw two enormous beasts within two days. Both on the stairs. We don’t tend to get many spiders at all but when we do, they’re fucking huge!!! DH acts as my knight in shining armour. He even gets out of bed to deal with them. He knows he’ll get no peace until he’s removed the spider. I was up mentally early for work one day (about 4am) and my hair was wrapped in my towel. Felt a tickle across my neck and brushed off a monster spider. Never screamed so loud in my life.

AskMeHow · 13/09/2019 18:28

I popped my mug in the sink at work this morning, thought I heard something move and assumed I'd just knocked something as there were other mugs in there. Carried on chatting to my colleague. Put the kettle on and went back to rinse my mug and oh my good god there was a monster in there lurking next to the sponge Shock

Had to ring the site manager to deal with it. It was the size of my hand Sad

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 13/09/2019 18:33

My worst nightmare is that one of my children in my class (I’m a teacher) will find a monster spider and I’ll have to try to be brave and get rid of it. My normal response is to squeal and cry. The one time one of them found a medium sized one, my TA was in the room and sorted it for me.

SlimGin · 13/09/2019 18:39

@MaryBerriesNiece where do you spray the Indorex, presumably anywhere they like to hang out?

theendofsummer · 13/09/2019 18:41

MaryBerriesNiece do you spray it on door sills and around window frames ?

OP posts:
Telesto · 13/09/2019 19:19

@theendofsummer Indorex been working for me too.. nothing since I started using it!

Dockray · 13/09/2019 19:31

I have a deal with the cellar spiders. I tolerate them and they eat the big hairy fuckers. It works very well, despite living in an old, draughty house we very rarely have the big uns. The cellar spiders I can cope with as they don't run at/over me or scutter about in general.

MaryBerriesNiece · 13/09/2019 19:47

@theendofsummer I spray it around the skirtings and along the door and window frames as well as inside my cupboards. We live in a very old farmhouse and I use 3 tins for the full house. Indorex deters them and works for 6 months. My friend recommended it to me and after trying every spider deterrent on the market it’s worked the last 3 years.

HandFinisher · 13/09/2019 20:19

It’s the quantity as well... last night my cat caught 5 that I know about (he likes to parade about with the legs hanging out of his mouth telling everyone what a fantastic hunter he is). This possibly explains why he isn’t eating much of his food... too full of giant hairy spiders to eat anything else!
