How do you pronounce the letter H?

How do you pronounce the letter H? Like ‘ach’ or ‘hhach’?

I work in HR and my name begins with H so I have confidently been saying ‘ach’ my whole life, but all of my colleagues say ‘hhach’ so I am starting to doubt myself.

We are all largely from the same region.

It’s driving me a bit crazy!

It's aitch

FamilyOfAliens · 10/09/2019 15:41

Aitch

glueandstick · 10/09/2019 15:41

The correct way is AITCH.

Don’t get started on schedule. 😂

SpeckledyHen · 10/09/2019 15:41

Aitch

kjhkj · 10/09/2019 15:41

It's "aitch". But the number of HR people who say haitch is astonishing. I think it comes from a fear of 'dropping your aitches'

WhatsMyPassword · 10/09/2019 15:42

aitch - or phonetically ay't'ch

absolutely not hay-t-ch

steff13 · 10/09/2019 15:42

Aitch. I'm in the US if that makes a difference.

Mykidsweird · 10/09/2019 15:42

Haitch however apparently that’s common 🤷🏼‍♀️

Pleasedontdrawonyoursister · 10/09/2019 15:43

Haitch - I know it’s wrong though, soz Grin

SinglePringle · 10/09/2019 15:43

Without the ‘H’. Ay’tch.

Unless you’re Irish, any other pronunciation is incorrect.

ILearnedItFromABook · 10/09/2019 15:43

Aitch.

lazylinguist · 10/09/2019 15:43

Aitch.

I am always baffled when people say it must be haitch because the sound should begin with a 'h' because that's the sound the letter makes. On that basis, 'w' would be called wubble-you.

Actionhasmagic · 10/09/2019 15:44

Aitch

RezCowgirl · 10/09/2019 15:45

Aitch

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 10/09/2019 15:45

“aitch”. My DD had a teacher back in year 1 or 2 who said “haitch” and DD started saying it too.... I soon got rid of that!

LoudBatPerson · 10/09/2019 15:46

Aitch here too. Does this change geographically? I'm in London.

BottomOfTheProblem · 10/09/2019 15:47

Aitch.

My name is Hannah, so does my vote count for more?

Didntwanttochangemyname · 10/09/2019 15:47

@lazylinguist Grin I love you, they will forever more be wubble-you to me!

TryingAndFailing39 · 10/09/2019 15:47

It’s aitch. My dc and I have different accents and pronounce some things differently but aitch is one thing I always correct them about.

flowery · 10/09/2019 15:48

Aitch. Haitch drives me potty. And I bet the majority of people who say haitch would not say En Haitch Ess when referring to our public sector health provider.

64sNewName · 10/09/2019 15:48

Aitch

flowery · 10/09/2019 15:50

”I am always baffled when people say it must be haitch because the sound should begin with a 'h' because that's the sound the letter makes. On that basis, 'w' would be called wubble-you.”

Yes this. You don’t hear nen, mem, sess, feff or lell do you?!

clary · 10/09/2019 15:50

I live in the East Midlands and everyone says it Haitch, even my kids! Drives me mad. Look it up, it's Aitch. No need to start the word with an H. Just like you don't say Feff for Foxtrot. My name starts with H too op so I feel your pain.

TheTrollFairy · 10/09/2019 15:51

I was going to say I say it haich but now I’m questioning it in reference to my surname.
To summarise... I’m not sure

Dutch1e · 10/09/2019 15:51

Aitch but I'm not bothered either way. The letter h is a funny one. Didn't the word "ring" used to begin with an h?
