How do you pronounce the letter H?

How do you pronounce the letter H? Like ‘ach’ or ‘hhach’?

I work in HR and my name begins with H so I have confidently been saying ‘ach’ my whole life, but all of my colleagues say ‘hhach’ so I am starting to doubt myself.

We are all largely from the same region.

It’s driving me a bit crazy!

I say Haitch (as do most of the people I know)

combatbarbie · 10/09/2019 16:15

h-ach scottish if that helps

firstimemamma · 10/09/2019 16:16

It's 'aitch'.

My fiancé is adamant it's 'haitch' and it drives me crazy!

SerendipityJane · 10/09/2019 16:19

But if your name is Hastings you wouldn't say Astings would you.

(after Izzard on USians)

"... you say 'erb', we say 'herb'. Because it's got a fucking 'h' in it ...."

violetswordfish · 10/09/2019 16:20

But if your name is Hastings you wouldn't say Astings would you.

The name of the letter and the pronunciation of the letter have nothing to do with each other. I wouldn't say Haitchastings either. Do you pronounce Nancy as Ennancy, William as doubleyouilliam etc

MadeForThis · 10/09/2019 16:20

Haitch. Irish Catholic. It's one of the things here that identifies which community you come from.

Say Enn Haitch Ess

LinoleumBlownapart · 10/09/2019 16:20

But if your name is Hastings you wouldn't say Astings would you.

Apply this to the rest of the alphabet and other names.......worked did it?

Didn't think so!

Ivechanged19 · 10/09/2019 16:21

I say “hitch” n hitch s and hitch r - I’m irish I didn’t really realise this was a thing Confused

Lifecraft · 10/09/2019 16:21

Aitch is correct. Haitch is what riff raff say when they are trying to pretend they're not riff raff.

If you're a real loser, you talk like Parker on Thunderbirds (Lady Penelope's butler) and put the "h" sound in front of words beginning with a vowel. Squeeze it in when you can.

"Y'hes milady...hi'll go houtside hand hask if they have hany happles"

habibihabibi · 10/09/2019 16:21

My son has a teacher who not only says haitch but also says j as jey( to rhyme with eye ) instead of jay. Drives me absolutely bonkers. I brought it up gently in a meeting and she was absolutely adamant she was correct and I, having grown up abroad, was in the wrong.

aprilshowers2015 · 10/09/2019 16:21

"Haitch" just kills me! But sadly other than my immediate family and a small group of school friends, everyone else I come into contact with says "haitch".
And I work in Haitch Ar Confused

Hilda40 · 10/09/2019 16:23

What about Hotel? That always triggers a debate.

Janleverton · 10/09/2019 16:23

Aitch

MissTicPizza · 10/09/2019 16:24

Aitch! I can't stand it that both my dc say haitch as that's how their teachers pronounce it.

BreastedBoobilyToTheStairs · 10/09/2019 16:24

William as doubleyouilliam etc

This made me crack up! Grin

(Also, it's Aitch!)

MaryPopppins · 10/09/2019 16:24

The proper way.

Aitch

Nonnymum · 10/09/2019 16:26

As PPs have said the correct way is aitch

AppropriateAdult · 10/09/2019 16:27

I brought it up gently in a meeting

I’m trying to imagine how you did this...

Haitch here. But I’m Irish, where it’s definitely not a class marker (but is a religious one).

dustarr73 · 10/09/2019 16:28

Haitch, but im Irish,Aitch seems so wrong

CantThinkOfNameOops · 10/09/2019 16:28

Haitch, I'm welsh an everyone I know says it like that

WednesdaySpinner · 10/09/2019 16:29

This is me too! I've never even noticed it before. I know it's aitch, when sounding out the alphabet I will say aitch, if someone points to the letter and asks what it is I will say it's an aitch, NHS is N aitch S. But HR is Haitch Ar. No idea why. Said it multiple times out loud and "aitch ar" sounds ridiculous. Even though it's obviously the right way to say it.

I've just recited the alphabet to test this, I also say aitch. I've just tried saying aitch R and am with you, I just can't because it sounds wrong to me. I think that it is too ingrained for me to change now!

Stravapalava · 10/09/2019 16:29

It's aitch. Haitch drives me mad.

Mummyshark2018 · 10/09/2019 16:32

I say Haitch as I'm Happy not appy.
Don't think there's a right way. Surely it's mostly accent and region dependent.

MaMaMaMySharona · 10/09/2019 16:32

I say aitch - but I live in the North West where everyone seems to say haitch and it drives me absolutely mad!

ClaraThePigeon · 10/09/2019 16:33

Aitch.
