Is being married more beneficial for men or women?

AIBU if I suggest that if a man isn’t prepared to marry you then a woman is vulnerable if she has his children and is financially dependent on him?

That depends. It isn't my situation as I have DC and am financially independent. I took my full entitlement to maternity leave and then went back to work.

For me marriage was never a priority, but we did ultimately marry (after a decade together and before DC) to give each of us security should something happen to the other.

Where it becomes a problem is if one of you badly wants marriage and the other doesn't. In my case, had my partner expected me to give up my career after giving birth, this would have been a deal breaker. Marriage or no marriage.

Married men live longer than single men.
Married women don’t live as long as single women.

Recent research showed that single, childfree women are the happiest.

Men’s careers are shown to improve upon both marriage and children, women’s the opposite.

Etc

But if they are having children and the woman is going to be a SAHM, it’s very beneficial for her, for them to be married.

So I think it’s dependant on individual circumstances really.

If the woman doesn’t have an income she may be more financially secure if she’s married, but it depends on the individual. But as a pp said, marriage generally benefits men - married men are on the whole wealthier, healthier and happier than their single counterparts. And two thirds of divorces are instigated by women.

More beneficial to the lower or non earner so usually the woman. Most men stand to lose a lot of it doesn’t work out.
