To be this gutted about a 50p coin?

I mean I know I am, but still.

Lost my purse a couple of weeks ago. It took me quite a while to realise it was missing because a- I mostly use Apple Pay on my phone so don’t tend to use my purse that much and b- I’ve just moved house so assumed it was lying around in a box somewhere. I wasn’t worried about it, there’d not been any fraudulent use of my card so I knew it hadn’t been stolen.

Like a lot of people, as well as the usual cards and stuff I also have a few sentimental things in there- a prayer card I picked up at the hospice where my Dad was looked after before he died, an old style £5 note folded into an origami heart, a lucky King George penny and a Peter Rabbit 50p coin that I came upon by chance and had never spent because I knew it was special.

Got a card over the weekend- turns out my purse has been handed in to TfL. Woohoo! Went and got it back today, and when she handed it over the woman went “Oh, and there was 50p in there wasn’t there?” goes over to a till, takes out a random 50p coin and gives it to me.

It turns out when stuff like purses are handed in TfL takes all the money out, counts it and puts it in a safe, some goes back in the till and the rest goes in the bank. Obviously when doing this nobody noticed that my 50p wasn’t actually in the change section of my purse, or that it was a special coin. So my Peter Rabbit 50p is gone and I can never get it back. I know I could go on eBay or whatever and buy another but it won’t be my Peter Rabbit 50p. I get really attached to things like that, and felt like it was extra special because it found me, I wasn’t even trying to get hold of one. Plus, you know, they’re rare!

I know I should be grateful to have my purse at all, but I just feel really sad about it. To think that it had been safe in purse right up until some office policy dictated that it had to be taken out just because, and now it’s gone forever. I’m absolutely gutted.

What 50p was it? I see Peter rabbit 50ps everywhere. They are quite common. I am sure that you will find another one.

Is this a rock I see above me? I never knew these existed and have never seen one in my entire life!

ZeroFuchsGiven · 09/09/2019 14:45

I will happily send you one of each if you pm me. I know it's not your one but I understand how upset you must be.

There is a full collection not just peter rabbit.

Goldenglory · 09/09/2019 14:50

Peter Rabbit 50p coin that I came upon by chance and had never spent because I knew it was special.
All the other things returned had special sentiment
This is just a 50p Peter rabbit coin that you got in your change or something so no real sentiment.
I’d be over the moon that I got the other stuff back and keep an eye out for another Peter rabbit coin.

Goldenglory · 09/09/2019 14:51

I'd be sending some emails. I'd want to know exactly WHY they remove other people's money from their belongings and not just put the whole lot in a safe/lost property. I would kick up such a stink until they change their policy.
Over 50p? Yes good luck with that

QuestionableMouse · 09/09/2019 14:53

The dolphin 50p is a Gibraltar coin.

There are some rare Peter rabbit coins that are worth thousands of pounds but there are also many that aren’t worth very much. Unless it was worth a lot or it was a special coin given by somebody then I’d understand why you’d be upset. However, if it was just a peter rabbit coin that you found and got attached too then I’m sure you could do the same with another coin. I’d take up the offer from others who have offered to give you one.

SaddleGoose · 09/09/2019 14:58

If you're gonna have sentimental stuff in your purse, don't be so blasé about it's whereabouts. I don't take special stuff out of the house, it's in a box and there's never a risk of losing it🤷🏻‍♀️

Rubicon80 · 09/09/2019 15:01

@SaddleGoose I agree.

Lindy2 · 09/09/2019 15:02

I'm glad you got your purse back.

Perhaps your lucky coin worked some magic so that you had it handed in and returned to you. If you lost it on the London transport system it really is a great service that they actually contacted you to let you know they had it. There must be thousands and thousands of lost items every month.

Just keep a look out for another special coin in your change. There are plenty out there. It can become your new lucky charm.

Funguy · 09/09/2019 15:07

But I would be so pleased that someone handed my purse in! I am sorry but I think you should be overjoyed.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/09/2019 15:08

I would be exactly the same.

Inanimate objects of little monetary value can assume great importance in my life, for whatever reason and it seems you are like me in this respect.

I hope you find another - and if you do, I suggest you convince yourself that it is the original come back to you.

EnglishRose13 · 09/09/2019 15:12

My MIL collects them for my son. We have quite a few now. Which one is it? I'll happily send you another and it can be special to you in a different way? Power of Mumsnet and all that.

Rafflesway · 09/09/2019 15:19

Am I the only person thicko who has never noticed these before. 🙄

They are lovely! misses point of thread

Greyhound22 · 09/09/2019 15:23

I collect 50p's I've got the Sherlock one in my purse at the moment as I haven't put it in my collection. I'd be annoyed too.

I think it's a bit weird they 'bank' the money. Why can't they just put the whole purse and contents into the safe? It could have been rifled through before the staff there got to it so there's a risk of staff beings accused anyway. As long as a manager logs the contents before it's put away. Very odd.

TheFairyCaravan · 09/09/2019 15:30

I'd be sad too.

I've got a Benjamin Bunny one that DS2 saved for me. I've had to hide it because I've caught DH putting it in his pocket on more than one occasion.

NoProblem123 · 09/09/2019 15:35

Which one is it I’ve got some spares ?

It's not about the value of it, the next person could have a 50 pound note, rather than 50p. It's the fact that they are removing other people's money when they don't really have the right to. There is no reason at all to remove money from lost purses.

EmAreSea · 09/09/2019 15:40

I think it was the 2017 one, where he’s holding one arm up? I don’t know if they’re more common, I’ve never found another one.

Everything else that was in there is present and correct, so that’s something!

Karkasaurus · 09/09/2019 15:41

I understand, OP. I like what a PP said about sending your good luck out into the world. It could end up being a very special coin for someone else.

lvsel · 09/09/2019 15:47

I have about 3 but wont be your one but I dont mind sending you one

lvsel · 09/09/2019 15:48

Its actually so rude for them to go in your purse and take your money out

FlamedToACrisp · 09/09/2019 15:48

YABU. There are 9325 of them on Ebay, so they're hardly 'rare'.

I can understand your feeling a bit disappointed, but 'gutted'? Over a mass-produced item, still readily available?

Unless there is an amazing story as to how you found this one or a particular reason as to why you 'knew it was special', your reaction is silly and over-sentimental.

BrendasUmbrella · 09/09/2019 15:50

OP's lost purse was found, stored, contents registered, a letter sent out to her and returned. Yes, kicking up a stink is absolutely the right thing to do in return...

The UK is awash with children's character 50p's. She'll find another one.

Derbee · 09/09/2019 15:50

Agree with PP, there are Peter Rabbit 50p coins everywhere. It won’t be long until you have another one, and that can be your new special one. Things like the prayer card from the hospice etc are much less replaceable.
