Awful flowers. Someone bought me some as part of a bigger arrangement last week which was very kind. We left them over the weekend, I walked in last night and my eyes started streaming (I have no allergies bu dh does!) They're the predator of flowers.
I've beheaded the ones that hadn't opened and castrated the ones that have and this morning the room seems almost back to normal.

Beautiful flowers, my favourite

StealthPolarBear · 09/09/2019 06:38

Bastards. I don't even like the way they look now. And if you ever get pollen on a light top, you may as well throw it straight out.

Nanny0gg · 09/09/2019 06:38

Not to mention, poisonous to cats...

sittingonacornflake · 09/09/2019 06:39

@StealthPolarBear noooo just really quickly get some sellotape and it comes straight off

StealthPolarBear · 09/09/2019 06:40

I will try to remember for next time thanks :)

It comes out with washing

Poisonous to cats yes, but then, Ive never seen a cat stupid enough to have one

StealthPolarBear · 09/09/2019 06:54

We didn't find it came out. Maybe we left it too long

Cats brush past them, get pollen on their fur, then later lick it off when washing themselves. That's how they get poisoned. I castrate lilies (excellent word!) for that reason.

Also they smell like funerals. Would never buy them for myself.

purplepoop · 09/09/2019 07:07

Lillies are my favourite!

Chrysanthemums i loathe. Graveyard flowers as they last fir sges.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 09/09/2019 07:09

I love lilies and they smell beautiful.

StealthPolarBear · 09/09/2019 08:54

Honestly th ough I have no allergies and am not particularly sensitive to pollen but my eyes were watering and my head felt bunged up (for want of a better word). They had permeated the whole room.

I grow lilies as they are beautiful but to be safe for my cats I only grow tree lilies so no chance of them brushing against the pollen.
I don’t like cut any flowers for the house as they are grown to look nice in the garden and feed the bees.

Orangecake123 · 09/09/2019 09:00

I love lilies, but can understand the pollen issues when they open up.

Hope you're feeling better OP..

Bringmewineandcake · 09/09/2019 09:01

I hate the smell of them, it makes me unreasonably cross.

vampirethriller · 09/09/2019 09:03

Lilies are my favourite.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 09/09/2019 09:05

I agree, OP, I hate lilies. The smell, the look of them, the pollen! Unfortunately, despite telling DH on numerous occasions that I don't like them, whenever he sends me a bouquet, it always contains lilies!! I think he must have a saved order at the florist!

BuildBuildings · 09/09/2019 09:07

I love them. They're my fave.

CassianAndor · 09/09/2019 09:07

hate them, they absolutely reek. Always remove them if I'm given flowers with them in. And if someone gets sent them at work, they are banished from the office as they are so headache-inducing.

Babdoc · 09/09/2019 09:11

The only “flowers” that smell worse are those things that look like purple ornamental cabbages on sticks. They were inexplicably popular in arty farty (appropriate term!) flower arrangements along with decorative foliage. They stink of sulphurous old farts!

lisasimpsonssaxophone · 09/09/2019 09:13

YANBU, I loathe them!

StealthPolarBear · 09/09/2019 09:17

I'm fine thanks Orangecake123 but feeling much sympathy for dh!

Pukkatea · 09/09/2019 09:28

I wonder if there is a genetic thing that makes them smell different to different people, like the taste of coriander? Because when people say they smell lovely I just can't work it out. To me they smell like stale urine.

CreatedBySombra · 09/09/2019 09:31

YANBU there's a reason they're funeral flowers...that fragrance would mask almost anything!

Cut lilies are awful, but in a garden they don't tend to be so overpowering. I can appreciate their aesthetic then.

paap1975 · 09/09/2019 09:34

I also castrated them. I think they smell of pee!
