To thinknit's not what you know, it's how well you play the game?

In the workplace especially.
I am not skilled at playing the political game but i notice the ones who are...might not work harder than me but make sure they are noticed, don't get annoyed about unfair behaviour and keep their head down and their face seems to fit. They therefore get the recognition and promitions.

Ive decided i need to follow their tack but i'm not good at ingratiating myself. Any tips please?

I think making sure everyone knows you're doing a good job is just as important as doing it - IFSWIM. If you google Susan Ritchie, she has a website and books on raising your profile at work if you're looking for promotion, I get her email newsletter and I find it helpful. I think you have to not see 'playing the game' as a bad thing but something you can do whilst maintaining your integrity. I think trying to keep out of petty stuff and staying focused on what you want can help too.

I think being a generally postive person really helps. Being the person rolling their eyes in meetings or immediately finding reasons why this or that won't work will be noticed for all the wrong reasons.

If you do disagree with things, having a workable, better alternative before tearing it down goes over better.

Being friendly with people outside your immediate team can help as well.

Absolutely.

And if you're good looking, you're already ahead of the majority of the competition.

All the PC bullshit in the world won't change that.

Knowing how to "play the game" is as essential a skill as any degree, and arguably more effective. Some people have the gift of being able to manipulate others.
