You have 12 months to change a first name but You can’t reregister to change a surname unless you get married and it’s to change to married name.

The only way is a change of name deed and using this alongside birth certificate to get official docs such as passport. However if dad is named as dad on the bc and has pr he would need to agree or you would need a court order.

In case it is any kind of reasoning changing surname makes no difference whatsoever to his pr if he has it

You can change a birth certificate if there was a ‘mistake’ but deciding you need a different surname might not qualify.

You could get married and change your baby’s name to yours or double barrel on the grounds that your DH and you will all take your name or double barrel as family name.

Or if the father agrees, do a simple deed poll change as in the above link.

Does he agree? At least to hyphenate / double barrel?

Could you add your last name as a middle name for the baby? At least then your name is still part of theirs?

We both had kind of long surnames so it wouldn’t be fair to double barrel lol .. I always thought it was up to a year aswell but seems that’s for first name.
