Housemate woes

I recently moved in short term to a house share with the owner occupied. When I moved in it was just me and him, he said he didn’t use a microwave so I said I’d buy my own. He moved a 3rd person in and I asked him to buy a microwave; he said that I said I’d purchase one as he doesn’t use it. No problem, it’s just that there’s a new person living here now and I don’t want to be the freak saying nobody is allowed use microwave. He said the new guy didn’t eat in the house and it won’t be an issue.

Purchased microwave and sure enough new guy uses it. He’s moved a 4rd person in and they think the house comes equipped with a microwave.

What would you do?

I’m only here short term for work

I predict this thread will go PING FASTER THAN YOUR NEW MICROWAVE

TheAlternativeTentacle · 03/09/2019 21:02

Move out and take the microwave with you.

Goodlookingcreature · 03/09/2019 21:04

I have another 6 weeks here before I leave to go home. I am concerned I’ve made him sound like he’s dangerous, he’s rarely here and I’m rarely here. We only see each other in passing. I’m just annoyed at leaving money out for a brand new microwave that the entire house uses.

Tistheseason17 · 03/09/2019 21:04

Just. move. out.
This is not going to end well.

MountPheasant · 03/09/2019 21:05

Obviously I’m petty but I get your point about the microwave. I would move it my room. It’s not about other people using it, it’s about the LL claiming it wasn’t needed.

WaggingKnife · 03/09/2019 21:05

Any man who sends texts like that is definitely dangerous.

Yappy12 · 03/09/2019 21:06

OP do you have a lock on your bedroom door? Hope so with such a randy landlord. His texts would worry me more than a microwave.

Goodlookingcreature · 03/09/2019 21:10

Yes I have a bedroom lock but what he said in text and what he’s like in person are so different!! Even after his passive aggressive texts (that I would say she made him send) he came home and was very friendly like nothing happened

Incredibly petty about the microwave. Incredibly blase about the sleazy LL.

Travis1 · 03/09/2019 21:11

I get it. That would annoy me too. Just make sure you take it with you when you go

eladen · 03/09/2019 21:16

Yes I have a bedroom lock but what he said in text and what he’s like in person are so different

Hmm And?

Loads of people think my rapist is a community spirited, stand up guy. I originally thought he was. He's still a rapist though.

steff13 · 03/09/2019 21:20

About a month into the living situation he was texting me telling me he’d massage me, I’d sleep after his massages, telling me I needed a good ride to make me tired and saying “I’ll bet you’re a horny bitch”

What on earth? You need to move.

be47 · 03/09/2019 21:22

You've said you're only there short term... so just take the microwave with you when you go?

My housemates use my kitchen stuff all the time, I'll still take it with me when I go, and as they're not cooking meth on it I'm not too bothered about sharing!

Elieza · 03/09/2019 21:27

Time to look for a new flat. That guy’s a creep. I don’t trust him and neither does his wife by the sounds of it!

The microwave situation sucks, but I’d be checking out my lease agreement with a view to leaving as soon as I had something else. I hope you can get your deposit back. The minute you give notice pack that micro up and put it in your room, not using if needs be for a few weeks.
Omg you need to get out. He’s horrible and you deserve better. Stay safe. Good luck on your new place.

Cannotresist · 03/09/2019 21:32

At the time you were the only one using it. He doesn’t want one someone else does they buy it. Now others have moved in If you don’t want to share be that “petty” . Either way either ask one of the others to buy it or take it when you go.

However more importantly In what world is someone more upset about people using your microwave than your attached landlord being a disgusting slease.

Woofbloodywoof · 03/09/2019 21:32

Well OP. Does your microwave have a border? A backstop? Have you made a deal with your landlord over its situation?

You have two options: Remain and share it with your fellow housemates, or leave and take it to your room to be lonely, friendless and without purpose while you and only you may benefit from its purpose.

Something to ponder over your next ready meal, perhaps.

eddielizzard · 03/09/2019 21:33

I'd move the microwave into my room. He sounds awful.

Pixie2015 · 03/09/2019 21:34

You could keep your apples in microwave when not using it to block the others out

Cannotresist · 03/09/2019 21:35

I really should have started my original post with

In the very very unlikely event the op is genuine...

Goodlookingcreature · 03/09/2019 21:42

I’m genuine. I bought an air fryer and a hand blender too, but I store those away when I don’t use them so it’s not an issue. I’m aware the microwave issue is trivial, hence asking what would everyone else do? Given that it’s more about the landlord than it is about sharing

OP posts:
sonjadog · 03/09/2019 21:42

Put the microwave in your room. Problem sorted.

ReanimatedSGB · 03/09/2019 21:44

Unless you bought a hugely expensive microwave with SPESHUL designer touches, you really need to get over yourself. Microwaves don't suffer from regular use.

WaggingKnife · 03/09/2019 21:48

This is very strange.
Are you using the microwave as a faraday cage or something?

MyNewBearTotoro · 03/09/2019 21:56

Surely you didn’t have to buy a microwave? It’s hardly a house essential and I wouldn’t expect a landlord to provide one. They are certainly not standard in rented accommodation so your landlord was reasonable not to provide one. It’s like asking your landlord to buy a coffee machine or a blender, him saying no but then you buying one yourself and finding people are using it. Well yes, if an appliance is there it’ll probably be used but that doesn’t mean every kitchen in rented accommodation should be fitted out with every appliance.

If you don’t want people using it move it to your room but you can’t put something in a communal space in shared accommodation and complain when others use it.

sheshootssheimplores · 03/09/2019 22:00

It sounds like you’re going to be there for a short time. Just let the microwave be used and then take it will you when you leave. It’s not going to break in 6 weeks.
