Prince Harry - AIBU?

barniee · 03/09/2019 14:13

Prince Harry saying "we can all do better" has really irked me- aibu?! He has every want and need satisfied while the majority of us and trying to do right by the environment whilst making ends meet. He is becoming very sanctimonious!

@InterpreterNotMandarin it sounds like someone who is waffling because he's talking shit!

helacells · 03/09/2019 21:21

I think this is the beginning of the end for these two. They are both so out of touch and uniquely stupid. He should relinquish his titles, get off the royal purse and move to SA and live a life of obscurity.

InterpreterNotMandarin · 03/09/2019 21:23

If I had to interpret for him then I would know he's talking rubbish, but anybody listening would think it's my fault for not interpreting correctly.

I went to the same school as Kate Middleton. She's as ordinary as I am and there's no way I'm bowing to any of them.

They are an utter joke and need to go.

Mummy195 · 03/09/2019 21:51

Spot on Bluegrass

Boysey45 · 03/09/2019 21:51

I cant stand that fat wanker Elton John either.

sue51 · 03/09/2019 23:10

Elton John has probably donated more money to charitable organisations (most notably his AIDs foundation) than any other British cleb. Its a bit harsh to call him a fat wanker. His music has stood up well to the test of time too.

StitchingMoss · 03/09/2019 23:15

I think he needs to do charity work (I mean he does fuck all else) but why pick climate change?? He’s making himself look v stupid. Pick something he can pretend to care about and not look like a staggering hypocrite on a daily basis and he might not get such a hard time.

He’s being badly advised by a usually slick PR machine.

StrakerAndBarlow · 03/09/2019 23:21

Viva le revolution 👌

IrmaFayLear · 04/09/2019 08:26

Bluegrass - it may all be the newspapers' fault. They may be picking on M&H and not focusing on other royals.

BUT - it doesn't alter the fact that Prince Harry is being a total hypocrite and should pipe down.

I'm sure all the royals live profligate privileged lives. But the point is they are not telling us, the great unwashed, how to live our lives.

donotcovertheradiator · 04/09/2019 08:57

Despite the usual comments defending PH, 83% of people-according to the vote button on your AIBU-totally agree with you, OP as do I!

Bluegrass · 04/09/2019 09:06

Surely the problem though is the people that have the voices which get the most attention are (not coincidentally) the ones most likely to be incredibly wealthy and with the greatest demands on their time. It is unrealistic to expect them to all potter around the sea on zero carbon boats for weeks on end if they want to attend venues at which their voices will be magnified.

So you end up with the situation where the message itself is entirely valid, but some people feel angry as it’s not being delivered to them from someone in a hair shirt standing in front of their solar powered windmill commune.

Like it or not, if people like Harry and Meghan are able to change behaviours of enough people, then there is a net positive result - they are effectively offsetting, and thereby justifying, their own travel.

I think there are people who don’t want the message to be heard, and the easiest and laziest way to achieve that is to focus entirely on the messenger (just see how Greta Thunberg is attacked).

The privilege/hypocrisy angle for Harry is part of that same game - ignore the message, rule people up against the messenger. It’s very effective as a strategy as people seem to ready to forget that what they see in the papers or watch on the news is inevitably a heavily curated version of truth.

Bluegrass · 04/09/2019 09:08

Sorry, that should have said “rile people up”!

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 04/09/2019 09:13

No one is expecting him to travel by boat for weeks on end. As many people on this thread have pointed out why couldn't he speak via satellite and highlight that with the advances in technology many meetings or speeches could be given in this manner?

His message would have been much better received and for once someone would be expecting big businesses to make a difference. Instead of once again expecting only individuals and families to do their bit.

ChangeItChild · 04/09/2019 09:17

I wish they'd just go away, he's just as annoying as PC & PW, I just wish they'd all take their designer clad woman folk and disappear.

Bluegrass · 04/09/2019 09:33

“No one is expecting him to travel by boat for weeks on end. As many people on this thread have pointed out why couldn't he speak via satellite and highlight that with the advances in technology many meetings or speeches could be given in this manner?“

I don’t know any of the details of that specific trip so can’t comment, but usually it is because there are also meetings scheduled which are much more effective if they’re done face to face. Certainly where I work we’re encouraged to use video conferencing wherever possible, but for some things you have to meet in person to really achieve a good result.

Also for people with “star power”, nothing quite beats a personal appearance - it’s like a currency they can trade for making things happen and it has more value than just “phoning it in”, whether that’s literally or via a satellite link.

DontFeedTheCatCake · 04/09/2019 09:34

Everyone seems to resent him coincidentally since he married a woman of mixed race. Funny that

No, people are starting to resent him because he's showing himself to be a hypocrite.

LaMarschallin · 04/09/2019 09:55

Perhaps the rich and powerful (not just the royals) need to at least be seen to accept and acknowledge that they've got a huge carbon footprint. And "offsetting" doesn't just make that go away.

Sometimes. I'd much rather watch a big music concert with the artist actually there, for sure.

For a discussion about the environment or whatever, a video-link seems fine.
If it's a serious discussion and not just a chance to breathe the same air as somebody famous, of course.

diddl · 04/09/2019 10:12

"No one is expecting him to travel by boat for weeks on end"

Well it's not as if he wouldn't have the time!

donotcovertheradiator · 04/09/2019 10:20

Marrying a woman of mixed race does not give him a get out of jail free card.

It is foolish to think that and even more foolish to declare it.

If you really think this appalling pair should no longer be criticised because one of them is half black-he is fully white and she is half white-then you need to give your head a wobble.

They are silly sods who thought no-one would compare what they are saying to what they are doing.

LaMarschallin · 04/09/2019 10:25

I've seen a lot of posts like these.
Sometimes they have a Confused or a Hmm too.

I'd presumed it's a way of calling people "racist" without getting the post deleted.

I've certainly said before that I defend my right to dislike people without it being implied I'm racist.

LaMarschallin · 04/09/2019 10:27

And there's not many (if any)of the royal family I have much time for these days.

I'm an equal opportunities Republican.

Mummy195 · 04/09/2019 10:58

Funny how no one was in arms back when H&M were sent an anthrax threat, Neo-nazis were arrested etc.

Did not see threads this long, with so many people saying how disgusting the threats were.

LaMarschallin · 04/09/2019 11:20

Presumably you mean "funny" as in "odd" rather than "rib-tickling".

I can't imagine any posted saying that was anything other than vile.
But threads just saying: that's vile/awful ; neo nazis are bad etc... probably run their course after a while.

Maybe this thread, for example, is more of a discussion?
Just a thought.
