Prince Harry saying "we can all do better" has really irked me- aibu?! He has every want and need satisfied while the majority of us and trying to do right by the environment whilst making ends meet. He is becoming very sanctimonious!

And yes, obviously the Danish way is preferable but the British monarchy doesn’t exactly move with the times!

BertrandRussell · 08/09/2019 11:33

“I'm not your research assistant.“

Fair enough. Nothing then. They are all as bad as each other.

IcedPurple · 08/09/2019 11:34

Harry will be the child of the monarch in a few years time and then will have a bigger role to play

Not neccessarily. Think of Edward and Sophie. They keep a very low profile and I'll bet many if not most British people couldn't even name their children. Granted, this queen has 4 children while Charles only has 2, but even so, Harry's role is almost guaranteed to decline over time, especially as the Cambridges have 3 kids who will grow up and start taking part in public life in in the not too distant future. The focus will be on them, not on Harry and his family.

Assuming the royals are still around, of course.

We'll see. Supposedly Charles' aim is to streamline the monarchy, and it's said that it was he who pursuaded the queen not to make the York girls 'working' royals, much to Andrew's chagrin. Let's hope he continues along those lines when or if he becomes king.

SamanthaBrique · 08/09/2019 11:39

@IcedPurple The Wessexes actually do quite a lot! Much of it goes under the radar as they don't have the glamour factor, but they carry out a lot of engagements. I think Harry will ultimately fade into the background but not until the Cambridge kids grow up and not while Charles is king.

I feel sorry for Meghan. Her FOO is bleak and she seems to be hell bent on recreating that in her new family.

SamanthaBrique · 08/09/2019 11:43

I'm interested to see what a "slimmed down" monarchy would involve. The Queen's cousins are getting on too and their children aren't going to inherit their duties.

It might involve a rethink of what the monarchy is for - what do they do with all the patronages, do they do away with ribbon cutting events etc because there aren't enough royals to go around?

IcedPurple · 08/09/2019 11:46

It might involve a rethink of what the monarchy is for

Which is a very good question in an - at least theoretically - democratic and meritocratic age. Why should we bend the knee to those who are no better than us - and in some cases are considerably worse than us - but just happened to be born to the 'right' parents?

I guess the monarchy could serve a function as a link with tradition, a national unifier and ocassional provider of pomp, ceremony and of course top gossip. But their position is precarious in the modern age, and it's up to them to work it out.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 08/09/2019 11:51

Charles and Camilla ... played an absolute blinder PR-wise in creating this persona of two people madly in love who were cruelty prevented from marrying who have finally been able to be together after decades

Despite the PR attempts I wouldn't quite call it "a blinder", when even the slighest enquiry shows the whole thing to have more holes than a Swiss cheese. More likely to my mind is that the media just have someone new to focus on, though that may change if - heaven help us - Charles becomes King

And FWIW I'm another who deplores the pitifully little work W&K do. I believe the usual narrative is that they're being given a chance to have a family life for now, but I can't help wondering if they're being handed something - anything - to keep them on the right track and avoid the same disaster his father's made of things

separatelives · 08/09/2019 12:00

The pair of them disgust me. All the hypocrisy, arrogance and entitlement. The pathetic secrecy with their baby, a glimpse of a foot, half a face etc. Like a pair of cheap Instagram bloggers. But if we criticise her we're racist FFS. Oh how convenient for Harry to then come out with you're all racist BS. The pair of them are as despicable as each other.

BertrandRussell · 08/09/2019 12:10

“The pair of them disgust me. ”
Why do they disgust you more than the others?

BertrandRussell · 08/09/2019 12:12

And are you more or less disgusted by them than you are by Prince Andrew?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 08/09/2019 12:14

I think we need clear rules on who the tax payer should pay for in the royal firm

I'm honestly not sure how well this would work when you consider how opaque royal accountants can make things. Does anyone really believe a family full of graspers would suddenly start thinking "oh no, better not - I'm not supposed to be paid for any more"?

Ditto Charles's much-touted slimming down of the monarchy. While a charitable view is that he really means it, there's an alternative which suggests he actually wants to keep all the baubles close to home and the attention on HIM

IcedPurple · 08/09/2019 12:26

I'm honestly not sure how well this would work when you consider how opaque royal accountants can make things.

Remember that one of the biggest expenses the royals incur is round the clock security - an expense conveniently left off all of those "But they only cost you about 10p a year" arguments, and entirely funded by the taxpayer. Only 'working' royals receieve this protection, so the more of them demoted to the royal of private citizen, the lower this bill will be. So that's something, I guess.

separatelives · 08/09/2019 12:27

Bertrand Russell I didn't know it was a contest. But we weren't speaking about Andrew. If the thread was about the royal family as a whole and we were asked who disgusted us most, then Andrew would top the list. Why not start a thread about him. But why do I need to explain to you why these two disgust me, I thought I just had actually.

separatelives · 08/09/2019 12:29

Also , where did I say they disgusted me more than the others? Confused

BertrandRussell · 08/09/2019 12:29

I understand why they might disgust you. I don’t understand why they disgust you more than the others.

BertrandRussell · 08/09/2019 12:30

Because otherwise you would have said that they all disgust you?

separatelives · 08/09/2019 12:32

Their security costs are disgusting. 21 of them getting round the clock security.

IcedPurple · 08/09/2019 12:34

Their security costs are disgusting. 21 of them getting round the clock security.

And the very best security officers in the business, entirely funded by the British taxpayer, still aren't good enough for Harry, who feels compelled to fly by private jet for his family's 'security'.

separatelives · 08/09/2019 12:40

I don't really need to explain to you but it's pretty obvious why surely. Their secretive nes (when it suits) their hypocrisy over the planet, telling us all to cut back whilst they use private jets., and no, the other royals might do the same but they don't blatantly preach like he does. There's loads more but why do you need to know. It's like you're determined to insinuate there's racism at play here BertrandRussell. Stop it, it's tiresome.
