To ask mumsnet for help with business name 🥴

Scorpiosista · 02/09/2019 20:01

Hiya , was advised to come here and ask the wise women of mumsnet for help as everything is in place for the business but a name . (Haven’t got the mumsnet app so found it hard to pick the right category , feel free to move it admin if you can)

I will be making and selling ocean related decorated home items , like mirrors/ lamps and other bits -using shells and driftwood.

For the life of me can’t settle in a name

Thanks for any replies x

Look at what website URLs are available. You will most likely find that almost all of them are gone, so it's worth thinking about what you might use that relates to the business name you choose.

There are some lovely words related to the ocean and reflections, particularly in other languages, that you could build a brand around. Just a thought as you mentioned mirrors.

Couple of examples attached - not saying these specifically but worth thinking wider than everyday words like shells and shore.

Be careful of pun names, I know everyone has fun thinking of them but they date a business really quickly and are connected in consumers' minds to fun and inexpensive brands.

So if you're looking to create higher quality product that stand shoulder to shoulder with upmarket brands, a pun could do more harm than good.

Good luck OP I hope it all goes well Smile

The market is a bit awash (sorry!) with cutesy plays on words. I’d find it refreshing if it had a less themed name - not necessarily nothing to do with sea/driftwood etc but a bit of a more ‘adult’ name ??? Adults not the right word there but less twee would be good foreshore Grin

LazyDaisey · 03/09/2019 07:31

You never ever ever use a free font for a logo Shock when your logo is just type Confused. That’s just branding 101.

Look at websites like creative market where you can buy a lovely and unique font for a tenner. Searching most popular will give you an idea what’s trending in graphic design.

And spacing out letters is definitely not trending.

Here’s a good article about what professionals have been creating

Also check out the trade mark journal at the ipo office. Don't use a name on there, or expect legal challenge if you do!

This was my point above about choosing a brand name. There is no point in just looking for a clever pun about sea in the abstract - this is a very amateur approach to branding.

You need to start with the ethos of your business and what you want it to convey.

OP what do you want your business to be about in terms of ethos? what is the core of it? what's important to you for customers to believe about your business

Cheap and cheerful?
High quality artisan craftwork?
Environmentally friendly?
Not environmentally friendly and wanting to gloss over that?
Disposable works for a season ?
Permenant art work of higher value?
Female artist?
Local artist?

This is where you should start.
