Hi all, posting here for traffic.

DS is 8 and has autism. He’s usually a endless ball of energy. He just keeps going...

But the last week he’s been ridiculously tired. He normally takes ages to nod off but he’s been asleep by 7pm every night, sleeping for 12 hours and sleeping in the day. This is unheard of. He’s very tired, lethargic and is eating little bits but not his normal appetite.

His temperature is normal. He doesn’t seem to be experiencing any other symptoms (asked if he felt poorly anywhere, throat, belly, ears etc but nothing).

Does being this tired warrant a trip to the doctors because it’s so unusual?

cannot blame it on the school holidays tiring him out because generally he’s been in the same routine as school time (same bed time, wake up etc) he’s sleeping more than he has for years.

Advice??

My general rule of thumb with these doctor posts is if you’re asking on here, you’re worried enough to ask in real life.

I’d go to the docs - it’s a major behavioural change and could be symptomatic of something bigger

Anxiety about back to school?

No harm getting him checked over

sometimesalways · 02/09/2019 08:03

No harm in checking. Maybe a growth spurt?

CAK111512 · 02/09/2019 08:05

I am thinking it could be anxiety about school. He does enjoy school but gets nervous the days leading up to a new term but the tiredness is a new thing! He usually had endless energy! 🥴

I may try ringing the doctors. My doctors surgery are a nightmare and it’s so hard to get an app but I will give it a try!

Hi mum of an autistic 6 (on Wednesday) year old here.
Any sudden change i would suggest a drs appointment.Emphasise his ASD when calling GP and good luck x

stucknoue · 02/09/2019 08:12

Is he verbal, if so you can obviously talk to him but if he is non verbal then a trip to the drs is definitely warranted

CAK111512 · 02/09/2019 08:16

He is verbal but delayed speech. He can’t always explain how he feels! 😭

Is he thirsty or peeing a lot? If you brought him to me (GP) the first thing I’d want to do is exclude diabetes with that story- I think he really needs to be seen ASAP. Try and take a urine sample with you if you can. Hope he’s fine.

Aprillygirl · 02/09/2019 08:53

That is a helluva lot of sleeping he is doing! I would definitely get him seen OP, especially as it's so out of the norm for him. It could be something quite simple like iron or B12 deficiency. Whatever it is, best to get it sorted before he goes back to school. Good luck.

saffy1234 · 02/09/2019 20:20

Did you get him seen OP?I hope he is ok x

CAK111512 · 03/09/2019 19:35

He was seen this morning. He is still very very tired (maybe slightly less sleepy today but still not right). Doctor couldn’t find anything obvious. we did a urine sample but have not heard anything so assume all is okay. Was told to go back if things don’t improve by Friday. He is due back to school on Thursday 😫

My DS is similar age. He has this every now and again (he's not got autism,or any diagnosis, but I think he'd meet criteria for ADHD if I had him assessed).

With him, it's usually a growth spurt or a virus. However, if you r worried get him checked over with the GP.

User344772734481882445 · 03/09/2019 19:43

Sorry, just see you've been to GP. Good to hear all ok probably a growth spurt or something. If he doesnt improve, just go back ..

User344772734481882445 · 03/09/2019 19:46

Just a thought - he's not suddenly discovered the iPad or Kindle or something has he? My DS who does everything at a million miles an hour, suddenly stops all activity the moment a screen is handed in his direction! ?

CAK111512 · 03/09/2019 20:08

Thank you User3477.... I’m gonna take him back Friday if he doesn’t improve. He usually has endless energy so that’s why it’s pretty out of character.

He loves his iPad, computer etc but nothing out the ordinary. In fact he’s completely avoided them. He hasn’t had the energy to do anything. He’s just been laying on the sofa for hours on Ed which never happens. He’s usually a very busy full on little chap that doesn’t sit still 😭

Sorry to see he's still tired and lethargic.Did gp not do bloods?

Nicolamarlow1 · 04/09/2019 13:46

Take him back on Friday, as you are going to do, and ask for a full blood test.

WellTidy · 04/09/2019 13:49

Is he pale? Any bruises/marks on his body?

I would be pushing for a blood test.
