My Dad helped me renovate the house i live in with my dc. Im divorced. When dc are all over 18 (6 yrs) i will have to pay exh what he is owed from house. Good chance i will be able to without selling.
Current house detached 4 bed in country with a garden too big for me to manage. Could buy a terraced ex council in village, smaller but smaller garden too and mortgage free. My Dad says it would be a crazy decision and he would be gutted if i did.
Aibu to think that it might be a good move despite his despairing....

Ultimately it's your decision, not your dad's. If being mortgage-free allows you to have a better lifestyle or reduce working hours etc then obviously they're big benefits.

I'll get flamed to death for this, but...

You'll obviously know your village and this may not be a problem, but the only note of caution I'd sound is buying ex-council if the neighbors aren't all now owner-occupied. Speaking from bitter experience.
