Halloumi fries

I’ve obviously come late to the table here but I saw them in Aldi today and thought I would give them a try. WTF they are like dry squeaky weird things. I knew they wouldn’t be melty but they were so odd. Aibu to not understand the hype. Should I just stick to my middle aged person chips instead of trying to be hip with the young folk?

I love halloumi fries, especially with sweet chilli dip, but the Aldi ones are crap. I say give them another go, in a restaurant or something, I promise they're not always like salty erasers Grin

Fiveletters · 31/08/2019 21:18

@Stickybeaksid sounds amazing!

GabsAlot · 31/08/2019 21:21

I love halloumi fries only had them at pub/reataurants though

mamaraah · 31/08/2019 21:21

@Stickybeaksid I'm going to Ireland in October, hoping to try the magical spice bag Grin

notacooldad · 31/08/2019 21:26

Aldi's are rubbish.
Mine are fantastic.
My halloumi burgers are better than the local restaurant's as well!

scarbados · 31/08/2019 21:29

I love halloumi fries because I'm diabetic and have to stick to a very low carb diet. I love finding a stall selling hallooumi fries at community events because they're a fast food I can eat and feel normal!

HarrySnotter · 31/08/2019 21:29

Halloumi comes directly from the arsehole of Satan GrinGrinGrin

PegLegAntoine · 31/08/2019 22:17

Worst halloumi: Pizza Express. Dry breaded mess with watery sauce.

Best halloumi: Chiquitos. Big chunks and amazing chilli jam. I could live on it.

I’m glad I saw this thread. It’s saved me money and disappointment! I love halloumi and I haven’t tried the Aldi fries so I won’t bother. The Morrisons battered halloumi is quite pleasant, it’s a bit bland though. Wetherspoons halloumi fries were better than I expected them to be.

Those poached eggs look like the same ones that Wetherspoons use for their eggs Benedict. It’s such a bizarre concept.

spongemumnudiepants · 01/09/2019 15:28

I've always considers halloumi to be pretentious middle class yummy mummy wannabe food. The type of food loved by those people who might attend a village pub gin festival.

My posh sil gives it to her kiddos in sandwiches as ' squeaky cheese' when she can't be bothered to cook a hot meal for them.

OtraCosaMariposa · 01/09/2019 15:30

I had halloumi "fish and chips" with halloumi as the "fish " and regular fries. Absolutely delicious.

The squeakiness is part of the appeal.

Oblomov19 · 01/09/2019 15:34

Aldi ones are vile.

healththrowawayx · 01/09/2019 15:35

I think you might have slightly undercooked them. Cold halloumi is super squeaky and dry, when it’s warm it should be softer and more pleasant.

I had to have cold halloumi the other day due to a late Deliveroo and it wasn’t very nice!

spongemumnudiepants · 01/09/2019 15:41

I do find it amusing when supermarkets experience a halloumi shortage and it makes the national papers. People panic over cheese!!
The British must eat the majority of the worlds halloumi stock from Greece.
However will people cope after October 31st?

spongemumnudiepants · 01/09/2019 15:43

Oooops... Cyprus not Greece

Zakana · 01/09/2019 17:53

@spongemumnudiepants lol at the middle class halloumi thing, in Cyprus, everyone eats it! And as for after 31st, I’ll be making my own, or getting relatives to bring it over with them. But you are right, when there have been halloumi shortages over here, we have suffered!

PookieDo · 01/09/2019 17:55

I make my own. I like them when they are quite well done

kitk · 01/09/2019 17:56

When did mozzarella sticks fall out of fashion? So much yummier!

SleepyKat · 01/09/2019 18:36

Both Tesco and M&S both still sell mozzarella sticks.

bilbodog · 01/09/2019 18:56

Why arent people just buying halloumi cheese and frying it? Dont get these pre-prepared ‘fries’ thing at all - its dead easy to slice the cheese and fry yourself???

Siameasy · 01/09/2019 22:39

DH bought mozzarella sticks and I noticed they were really heavily breaded whereas the halloumi fries are more “dusted” and heavily breaded stuff is seen as unhealthy and a bit freezer food maybe?

gingersausage · 02/09/2019 06:50

@spongemumnudiepants haha I’m a hater of all things “yummy-mummy” and halloumi wasn’t on my yummy radar 🤣. I’m a vegetarian and it started being on lots of pub menus and I love cheese of any description so I ended up loving it.

@Zakana do you have a good recipe? I’d like to give it a go.

BonnesVacances · 02/09/2019 06:57

I found if you cook them for the time it says, they do dry out. So I undercook them. Also, like with halloumi generally, you need to eat them fast as they cool down quickly and then seem dry.

spongemumnudiepants · 02/09/2019 11:24

Sil bought me a cook book ages ago that has 'recipes ' for those middle class mummy favourites pasta and pesto and squeaky cheese sandwiches 🤢
