Halloumi fries

I’ve obviously come late to the table here but I saw them in Aldi today and thought I would give them a try. WTF they are like dry squeaky weird things. I knew they wouldn’t be melty but they were so odd. Aibu to not understand the hype. Should I just stick to my middle aged person chips instead of trying to be hip with the young folk?

I had them recently in a cafe. I thought they weren't nice.

Haloumi needs to be grilled or fried in a pan. Haloumi fries just ruin this lovely cheese.

Loopytiles · 31/08/2019 20:38

Best freshly made/fried, supermarket ones nothing like they should be.

ShiftHappens · 31/08/2019 20:39

... never been to Greece but go to a Turkey sometimes. never seen Helim cheese turned into fries there. Must be a British obsession to ruin lovely food that way. hmmm

Twofurrycatsagain · 31/08/2019 20:42

I love halloumi and bought the aldi ones. They were dire, possibly the worst thing I've had from aldi. Binned them.

CombineBananaFister · 31/08/2019 20:43

Aldi ones are awful. Dry, salty and they do that thing where they shrink inside the coating. But I wouldn't write them off,,as done well they really are gorgeous - it'd be like saying you don't like steak or cake because you'd tried some ropey-arse shit version.

MaybeitsMaybelline · 31/08/2019 20:46

I love Halloumi but the average portion is 30g and it’s full of calories. Took the fun out of it for me because I could easily do 3/4 of a whole block

Catbrat · 31/08/2019 20:47

Yabu. Halloumi is the bestest. I make my own, just dab strips of of it in some flour and fry. Amazing.
I made it that much at one point my family told me I had to stop with the halloumi Grin

SleepyKat · 31/08/2019 20:49

I had them dished up in Camden market the other day after reading rave reviews about a particular seller. Very underwhelmed.

InvernessAdventure · 31/08/2019 20:53

All halloumi fries are not created equal. Dry-fry fresh halloumi and dip it in chilli jam. Then you'll understand.

RumpoleoftheBaileys · 31/08/2019 20:59

Putting aside the halloumi (food of the Gods) issue, I went and looked at the reviews of the Morrison's ones (Bloody awful). Anyhoo, that led me down a rabbit hole to these babies:

groceries.morrisons.com/webshop/product/Morrisons-Fresh-Ideas-2-Poached-Eggs/445151011?from=search&param=fresh%20ideas

Cooking instructions: Submerge unopened egg pack into off the boil water (just before boiling) for 3 minutes before serving. Once prepared use immediately.

The world has truly gone mad.

Triskaidekaphilia · 31/08/2019 21:01

Halloumi is amazing but when battered you don't get the lovely crispy outside on the actual halloumi like when you fry or grill it, for me decent halloumi 'fries' would have no batter, just sticks of halloumi fried... I want halloumi now!

Zakana · 31/08/2019 21:04

Greek Cypriot household here, we love halloumi cooked, uncooked, saganaki style, and I’m just about to start trying to make my own tomorrow along with some feta. Agree that the rubbish halloumi fries made by the supermarkets are just that - rubbish, we are squeaky cheese lovers (apart from DD who will only eat feta and strong cheddar).

Egghead68 · 31/08/2019 21:05

OMG - had them in a pub with chilli sauce (prob not Morrison’s brand though). A. MAZ. ING (but total calorie bomb).

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 31/08/2019 21:05

yes, the aldi ones are not worth the money! You'd be better eating the box.

DIY...either lightly dust in seasoned flour and dry fry in a very hot heavy pan. Like scallops, put them into the pan in strict order, by the time the pan is full turn them, repeat till all sides are done

Or if you have the time, dunk them into egg and roll in breadcrumbs and then deep fry....again, keep the heat high and brief .

...it's the over cooking that makes halloumi dry and salty.

Egghead68 · 31/08/2019 21:06

(Aldi not Morrison’s!)

Girasole02 · 31/08/2019 21:07

Restaurant ones = manna from Heaven. Aldi= ate two then gave up.

Fiveletters · 31/08/2019 21:07

Yeah the Aldi ones are underwhelming but good ones are a gift from heaven.

What is a spice bag?!

FattyPeddledFuriously999 · 31/08/2019 21:07

thanks for the heads up on the morrison ones Grin

mamaraah · 31/08/2019 21:09

I had them for the first time recently. They were okay. I wouldn't order them again. They're expensive and just okay

Stickybeaksid · 31/08/2019 21:09

@RumpoleoftheBaileys those eggs have made me feel a bit queasy

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 31/08/2019 21:11

I tried the Aldi ones a few times thought they were 'ok'

Didn't buy a Costco bag (because they were £10 ) they might've been nicer ?
I usually slice and dry fry or dust with flour and black pepper then fry in a small amount of good olive oil.

But I'm going to try the egg/flour batter and fry

jmh740 · 31/08/2019 21:12

I love halloumi fries from spoons tried the aldi ones and they were horrible

Stickybeaksid · 31/08/2019 21:12

@Fiveletters I think a slice bag is a Dublin thing but basically it’s the dry
Shredded chicken from the Chinese mixed with chips, fried peppers and onions and a little chilli and all coated in a spicy seasoning. It’s the food of Kings.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 31/08/2019 21:12

Stickybeaksid · 31/08/2019 21:12
