The government is starting an advertising campaign next week telling us all to "Get Ready!".

What else can it mean?

By the way, it's costing £100m.

So much bingo on here I can't keep up.

You do know that stored body fat isn't proper nutrition, don't you?

PoffleWaffleWoo · 30/08/2019 19:13

No objection to stockpiling BTW, that seems sensible and I do have a little stash. But I don't think this is a doomsday scenario.

Miljah · 30/08/2019 19:14

@Autumnintheair "Whatever happens the media will whip everything into frenzy".......

Warn me before you post such side splitters! Grin

I think it's harsh and unreasonable of you to suggest any of our great, noble, honest press, those pillars of rectitude, holders of the Light Of Truth in dark times might, for whatever nefarious reason "whip" anything into a "frenzy".

We really are 'post-truth', aren't we?

Cheeserton · 30/08/2019 19:17

Maybe people will stop wasting so much food

Very different issues. You'd be a pretty big fool to stockpile perishables that you'll waste.

ControversialFerret · 30/08/2019 19:18

I know that HRT is a Chinese supply issue, but Dianette (contraceptive) isn't - that's made in Germany. There are lots of drugs which we have to import from the EU, some of which cannot be stockpiled (such as insulin). Project Yellowhammer has stated that the intention is to prioritise clearance through border control of critical medicines - that in itself is likely to have a knock-on effect on other non-critical goods (such as pet food), if there is a backlog at customs.

I honestly don't think people realise how truly unprepared the Government is. I've had to deal with Brexit prep on a professional basis - which has involved looking at the Govt whitepapers for sectors and industries. They are laughably basic, with little or no detail in them. Transport in particular is a hot spot; at the moment we have freedom of movement throughout the EU. In the event of no-deal, lorries will need international driving licences (the requirements of which will vary between countries) plus green cards for entry and exit, for each vehicle they transport. Bear in mind the lorry cab and wagon are considered to be individual vehicles - and each green card needs to be specific to the journey and countries visited. The paperwork alone is an issue, because we haven't digitised the process, because we didn't need to because of freedom of movement! Hopefully there will be a deal but if there's a hard Brexit then Operation Stack will look like a day in the park...

Alsohuman · 30/08/2019 19:18

@bellinisurge, I very much doubt vast quantities of pasta is “proper nutrition” either. We’ll survive.

Socksontheradiator · 30/08/2019 19:20

@Teafortara look up Jack Monroe's book Tin Can Cook. Many recipes for store cupboard food (mainly tinned as title suggests)
I have tried several of the recipes and they are easy and tasty. The trick is to have plenty of herbs, spices and garlic to jazz things up.

PhilSwagielka · 30/08/2019 19:20

I'm doing it by degrees. An extra tin of beans here or there, or a bag of rice. It can't hurt. I'm more worried about meds - I'm on antidepressants and I also have fibro and am prone to headaches, so I need OTC painkillers.

Miljah · 30/08/2019 19:20

cheeserton I get the impression most stock-pilers know what they're doing.

Those to whom it hadn't occurred to that Nov 1st might not be business as usual, because The Sun and The Mail told them it would be- are far more likely to do a trolley dash.

It's about having done some research. I know, I know, damn facts, but there you are.

Miljah · 30/08/2019 19:22

Alsohuman "We’ll survive".

Is that it? Is that the best you hope for?

Jesus wept.

The bar is soooo low.

bellinisurge · 30/08/2019 19:23

@Alsohuman , I don't have vast quantities of pasta. I have a balanced diet in my pantry.

yolofish · 30/08/2019 19:23

I'm in Kent, having lived through several lifetimes of Operation Stack, you can bet I'm making sure we have enough in to survive when the roads are gridlocked and the shelves are empty.

twofingerstoEverything · 30/08/2019 19:24

Havanana Hey, steady on with those pesky facts!

bellinisurge · 30/08/2019 19:27

Meat, carbs, fruit , veg, dairy, treats. Herbs for flavour. Bread ingredients to make bread. And yes, pasta and rice. To last me a while. All shelf or freezer stable. And some homegrown in my tiny garden.
@Alsohuman .

Serin · 30/08/2019 19:32

I prefer fresh food.
I guess I could use the air rifle to bag a few wood pigeons Grin
There is not enough room in our house to stockpile food! We have 3 young adults! They eat the contents of an average sized sainbury's every week.

ControversialFerret · 30/08/2019 19:34

PhilSwagielka every time I go to the shop I throw a couple of packets of cheap paracetamol and ibuprofen in my basket. We always need it, so the worst case scenario is that I don't need to buy any for a couple of months!

Alsohuman · 30/08/2019 19:36

Fine, you all crack on. You’re all doing what you think works for you. I’m not criticising you, just not joining in. A few months on a basic diet would do the two of us the world of good.

bellinisurge · 30/08/2019 19:36

I prefer fresh food too @Serin . I also prefer eating a balanced diet. You have had ample opportunity on here to ask for advice on creative use of space and budget friendly stocking up. Over a year this has been discussed on MN.

BogglesGoggles · 30/08/2019 19:44

I thought it was aimed at businesses?

BizzzzyBee · 30/08/2019 19:51

So desperate were people to get back at the rich for Austerity, they thought they were getting the boot in by voting Leave
Disagree - I still think it was largely a vote about immigration. Hence why, in the weeks after the vote, there were reports of Polish people being harassed and told “we won, you have to go home now”. And all the stuff about “taking back control of our borders” etc.

Kublai · 30/08/2019 19:54

Off to Farm Foods with my sister tomorrow to stockpile, never been there before...

BeanBag7 · 30/08/2019 19:59

My point was: If there are serious food shortages then someone will take your stash off you. And if there aren’t serious food shortages then you didn’t need a stash in the first place
Surely you can comprehend some sort of middle ground between "marauding gangs" and "no issue whatsoever".
I'm predicting long queues, limited choice and price increases. Having a stockpile of the foods I like that will provide a balanced diet and were purchased for a reasonable price.

peachgreen · 30/08/2019 20:20

I agree Beanbag. Mine is more about delaying the inevitable price surges.

Socksontheradiator · 30/08/2019 20:26

One person's stockpile is another person's usual state of affairs.
If you don't normally have much in, you won't be able to ride any shortages out unless you create a bit of a buffer.
I've read people on here calling preppers silly, before saying that 'they' always have plenty in.
That leaves me feeling a bit Confused

Adds "we'll survive" to Bingo card
