The government is starting an advertising campaign next week telling us all to "Get Ready!".

What else can it mean?

By the way, it's costing £100m.

It's a ghastly amorphous campaign that in theory should point people (mainly small businesses) to a centralised Government web resource...

...but instead will like you said, have people stockpiling like it's the nuclear apocalypse

Oh well, at least spending will be up, feelgood factor for Government etc

Dhalandchips · 30/08/2019 11:29

Off to buy toothpaste now. Hadn't thought about that. I currently have all the bog roll!

GinDaddy · 30/08/2019 11:32

Hold on.

Are people seriously thinking about stockpiling?

BarbaraofSeville · 30/08/2019 11:32

They need people to panic buy so the country doesn't go into recession by the 'two consecutive quarters of negative growth' definition.

People panic bought in the run up to 31st of March only for it all to be postponed until the end of October, so they used up all the stocks they'd accumulated and bought less between April and June.

Maybe it's not looking particularly great for the July to September quarter so they need to make sure people spend plenty to make sure we have at least some growth.

The shit show that is Brexit is a side issue.

Inebriati · 30/08/2019 11:32

We have bog roll, toothpaste, washing powder & painkillers.
Plus some easy to heat food that can be eaten cold, and cooking oil as the UK is not self sufficient in manufacturing fats and oils.

Rachelover40 · 30/08/2019 11:34

Dreadful.

I'm not going to start 'panic buying', it's too ridiculous. Anyway what can you 'panic buy' apart from tins and some stuff to put in freezer which doesn't last forever?

Venger · 30/08/2019 11:42

Under my stairs and in my spare freezer I have:

  • toilet roll
  • pasta
  • noodles
  • 'add water' meals (e.g., pasta and sauce packets)
  • tinned tomatoes
  • baked beans
  • tinned tuna
  • tinned corned beef
  • tinned fruit
  • tinned soup
  • mayonnaise and ketchup
  • porridge oats
  • lentils/broth mix
  • stock cubes
  • water
  • fruit juice
  • squash
  • UHT milk
  • frozen veg
  • frozen chicken strips
  • frozen mince
  • Birds Eye chicken dippers (four bloody bags of those as they're more or less all DS will eat)
  • dried bread mix
  • paracetamol
  • calpol
  • ibuprofen
  • plasters
  • nappies
  • wipes

I've spent approx £60 but its all things that will get used anyway and it means if there are any supply issues or shortages I don't need to go to the shops and I'm then not buying stock that can be used by other people instead.

Pollywollywoowah · 30/08/2019 11:53

Well I’ve not got the money nor the space for stockpiling anything so guess we’re up shit creek.

Need to lose a few stone anyway.

RosesAndRaindrops · 30/08/2019 12:03

@GinDaddy
Hold on. Are people seriously thinking about stockpiling?

Grin Are you new here lol? You've missed some spectacular threads.
Are people seriously thinking about stockpiling? Um, there's threads dedicated to Brexit stockpiling.
I've in all seriousness seen people say they've been taking the sides of the bath to fit more tins of beans or whatever in.
Plus some were saying about burying some outside Confused

Me...... lol

Vilanelle · 30/08/2019 12:05

Stockpiling indeed.

Silene · 30/08/2019 12:09

Dear lord. Is it world war three?what on earth are these politicians trying to do? Good job I have the Ministry of Food recipe book The Kitchen Front. Anyone for rabbit?

LuciferTheCat · 30/08/2019 12:10

DD seems to think there will be a shortage of hoodies and has bought bloody loads Confused

HennyPennyHorror · 30/08/2019 12:12

Siline nothing wrong with a bit of rabbit.

Dogsarebetterthancatsok · 30/08/2019 12:12

It’s people stockpiling that’ll cause the shortages. Absolute idiots

WooMaWang · 30/08/2019 12:14

Why are people anticipating that Brexit is going to precipitate some kind of zombie apocalypse requiring us all to start living off pot noodles?

Sindragosan · 30/08/2019 12:15

At least autumn is harvest time. Time to go blackberry-ing, preserve plums, apples, pears etc. Late winter/early spring is when you're going to be buggered.

Letsnotusemyname · 30/08/2019 12:16

Fortunately adult child #1 has enough insulin, needles, test strips etc.

OrangeJustice · 30/08/2019 12:17

I quite like Pot Noodles. Luckily.

Inebriati · 30/08/2019 12:18

People are stocking up because there are already shortages caused by Brexit, its nice if you haven't been affected yet but its been really noticeable if you use some medications.
(and also because the govt are advising us to.)

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 30/08/2019 12:19

On another thread someone who voted leave is talking about the stockpile they have for bad weather which personally i think is very sensible

Apparently its only brexit stockpiling that is bad

Which is interesting

Its also interesting to see what people consider a stockpile to be

StCharlotte · 30/08/2019 12:20

My one concession to it will be filling up the car in advance as we've got a long drive on the 1st.

Worst case scenario, we've got an allotment which is not publicly accessible but we may have to have an armed guard over the potatoes... Grin

ContessaLovesTheSunshine · 30/08/2019 12:22

I'm slightly concerned about my thyroid medication tbh. I won't die right away without it, but I'll be feeling pretty shit....

eosmum · 30/08/2019 12:22

What should we stock pile in Ireland? What UK goods will we not be able to get Wink

yellowsubmarines · 30/08/2019 12:23

WooMaWang Fri 30-Aug-19 12:14:36 Why are people anticipating that Brexit is going to precipitate some kind of zombie apocalypse requiring us all to start living off pot noodles?

This is what I keep trying to figure out. Do people really think the world will end on 31 October 2019?

TeaForTara · 30/08/2019 12:24

All these people stocking freezers: Do you assume there will be no power cuts? Doesn't most of our energy come from Europe?
