To ask for tips on keeping my arm cast nice and spanky?

I've broken my hand and I have a cast thing in my whole hand and lower arm. It has a fabric stretchy bandage on it.

Obviously life can't stop just for this so can I please have your tips for not ending up with a disgusting, stinky bandage.

Left handed only activity/housework tips also welcome!

It's bound to happen I'm afraid unless you put some sort of plastic wrapping over it. I broke my wrist and I had a white cast on, which ended up disgusting and grey. When I got it off and x-ray'd again, I had to get another cast put on. I asked for a coloured one and got a purple cast that time. Still ended up a bit whiffy, but it didn't show up the dirt as much. I bet Amazon or Ebay sell all sorts of cast covers, worth a look.

Spanky??

MountPheasant · 30/08/2019 10:27

There’s nothing you can do IME because it’s the inside that gets stinky, not the outside. Sorry OP!

spanky as in spanking new. HTH.

I always wanted one of those Xray cast covers, you can get a cover printed to show what you have done. I reckon the NHS could rake in a fortune if they offered that as a service in the fracture clinic.

Pot of cheap emulsion from B&Q? You could give your cast a fresh coat every day.

NoTheresa · 30/08/2019 10:59

Surely the whole point is graffiti all over it?!

I've used the Limbo protectors before but probably not ideal for doing fiddly stuff

Thanks people who responded. I'm not trying to turn it into a fashion piece, just not have it get smelly smelling or smelly looking. I agree that the smell comes from within. I might get a tattoo sleeve for it just to distract. The Pot comes to my finger tips which is why it's so yucky. M

Yep, get yourself a Limbo.

Aldi does lovely hand gel that you can put on a cotton pad and rub just inside the cast (just be careful not to get the actual cast wet), which might help keep it less grotty.

Chottie · 30/08/2019 20:33

When I broke my wrist, the second cast was a lightweight one. It was purple with sparkles on it. It really cheered me up when I looked at it. It did smell and so did my hand. I could not wash my hand, so I used wet wipes.

I was going to recommend limbo to, I'm a Community Nurse and we prescribe them for a lot of our patients in bandages.

RickJames · 01/09/2019 08:33

Thanks for the link to the limbo - it made me giggle for some reason.

I like the anti-bac gel tip too.

Everything seems to take bloody ages one-handed grrrrr...
