Sorry to post here but I know it's the best place for traffic. I can't find my birth certificate! I have kept it in the same place for over 30 years. It is not there! I have gone through everything.

I really need it for id for a check as my passport had just expired. Can anyone think of anything that I might have needed my certificate for if a passport isn't enough? If I could think of a reason I might know where I have stupidly put it!

Thank you!

Order a new one...they come very quickly. Your local council know how to do it...google "order birth certificate" and the name of your local council for information. I think I got one same day...you have to go in.

Crazyhouse123 · 30/08/2019 05:49

Is it the same day? I looked on the Gov.uk website and it said 10-15 days unless I pay £35 for next day! I will try the council thank you!

Get someone else to look in your usual place?

HennyPennyHorror · 30/08/2019 05:53

Well if you're desperate, 35 pounds isn't too bad.

Crazyhouse123 · 30/08/2019 05:54

Done that! I am up now going through it again, and an old bag of paperwork waiting to be shredded just in case!

Do you have a scanner/copier at home OP? Is it sitting on that from when you last copied it?

Crazyhouse123 · 30/08/2019 05:56

Hi Henny oh I know, but we don't have cash to throw around so I was trying to avoid paying it if i could, especially as i need to renew my passport, and also I (stupidly) thought all week that I was bound to find it as it has always been kept safe!

Hi Crabb...good idea, just checked there and nope! I had a flicker of hope then too! Thank you.

Have you had a new job or changed gp or anything or some reason you'd need to use it?

Crazyhouse123 · 30/08/2019 06:05

Hi Monty27 no I used my passport for my current job. I can't remember the last time I used it for anything!

I lost mine without a trace when I was renewing my passport two years back.

I would spend the money to get the new one because you never know and it is best to have it. I still haven't found my original... Confused

Crazyhouse123 · 30/08/2019 08:37

Oh RiskItBiscuit that's pants. I am going to order the new one today. I have spent all my spare time this week looking and dont want to spend all weekend doing the same!
I just cant remember what I used it for.
Ah well! Thank you all for your posts!

If it's a British passport acuity renewal, you don't usually need to send the supporting documents again.

Have they actually asked you for it?

Mumtotwo82 · 30/08/2019 09:11

I lost my birth certificate about 18 years ago. When my passport needed updating when I got married and also because it was going to expire i didn't need my birth certificate. I think the old passport was enough. That was 10 years ago it needs updating now again.

ArDali1 · 30/08/2019 09:11

If I remember correctly, when I renewed my passport not long ago they didn't ask for supporting documents, just sent my old passport in and received the new one within a week.

Crazyhouse123 · 30/08/2019 09:36

Hi yeah unfortunately it's not passport renewal (just done that online) I need it to support a student finance application. They need the passport to be in date, it expired end of last week! So it has to be my birth certificate. Which I can't find!
So cross with myself. I have had a crazy year so am not as on top of these things as I usually am. Grrrrr!

Did you attend any interviews etc, where you may have popped it in a bag or an envelope with other paperwork?
Could you have shoved it in a cupboard along with normal household bills and planned to move it to your safe place later?
Have you checked old handbags?
Do you & your partner (assuming, sorry) keep your files separately, perhaps it has got jumbled in with their things?
