to think that if the Government ignore petitions, they can't ignore mass protests this weekend

They ignore petitions.
They lie about the reason for suspending Parliament.

If you want to do something that can't be ignored, please join one of the protests this weekend.

Because it is doing something other than retweeting and posting on forums. It's visible action.

Is anyone joining a protest this weekend?

They will ignore it.

When we have a general election I can but hope that we can hold out representatives accountable. But I fear even that is a big ask. In my area it's conservative every time with no viable opponent.

Jaffacakebeast · 30/08/2019 22:01

Seriously Hmm if you’re not going to be doing something that can get you all arrested (road block/chained up) you will achieve nothing, probably won’t even get coverage. Just accept Brexit won the vote and PM is trying to make that happen. No deal is said to be a threat rather than a reality, to get more from the EU. Let them get on with their job, they’ve fucked around for years already

Meadowland · 30/08/2019 22:06

Sorry, but if you voted Leave, you voted for BJ, Gove and Garage.

Meadowland · 30/08/2019 22:07

Farage

Alsohuman · 30/08/2019 22:13

This isn’t about fucking Brexit. It’s an attack on democracy and a right wing coup. For God’s sake, wake up, people.

ContinuityError · 30/08/2019 22:24

*It’s an attack on democracy and a right wing coup.i

The frog has been boiled slowly enough for Johnson to complete the coup - for years now the judges have been the “enemies of the people”, MPs have been “saboteurs” and civil servants “traitors”.

Suspending the legislature so that the executive can do whatever it wants ... that’s the gas just turned up to 11.

LetsTryToLetGoOfAnger · 30/08/2019 22:36

The coup was the rich and powerful (predominantly south east england based) middle class of the UK just saying "Nah, don't think we'll implement the vote thanks, what are you going to do about it" for the whole time since it was cast.

It's about time something went against do-wrongers, even if it will probably be short-lived.

Just maybe if Theresa May had bothered to work cross party from the start, to have public consultations etc, she might have found cross party consensus to get enough MPs to carry a form of Brexit that would have satisfied enough people in this country.....instead of setting her red lines and not working with other MPs throughout Parliament.

But she didn't bother.

Precisely @chomalungma.

chomalungma · 31/08/2019 15:26

It was great to be at a demonstration today and to hear such great speakers. There are some very passionate people out there.

It's great to be part of something big. There are protests happening all over the UK today. Something is stirring.

Lol it’s not, I’m sorry but Boris Johnston wants to leave the EU he’s not interested in a few hysterical petitions. We voted to leave we’re leaving!

TabbyMumz · 01/09/2019 09:36

So it turns out the petitions were a bit of a damp squib. One by us was very little populated and hardly any made it to the news.

WalkofShame · 01/09/2019 09:50

Of course it’s all being misrepresented in the media, there is a particular narrative to present which is how we got in this mess to start with. Sadly people fell for it before and probably will again.

The reason no one can agree on what to to about Brexit is that it’s a ridiculous idea which isn’t good for anyone, thought up by idiots who were having a lovely game trying to wind everyone up and get famous in the process. It was blatantly obvious when the referendum happened that everyone was shocked to fuck and no one wanted to touch it with a barge pole. Theresa May was the person who stepped in to try and make it work (because no one else wanted to), and because she couldn’t (because it’s a stupid idea), we’ve ended up with a posh oaf in charge who’s just going to bully his way through everything because that’s probably how he deals with everything in life.

I’m no fan of Theresa May at all but she really was royally stitched up.

longwayoff · 01/09/2019 09:55

I'm watching Michael Gove weaselling and slithering through Andrew Marr show. Shuddery. And still people will vote for this bunch of shysters, charlatans, conmen and spivs.

Isitsixoclockalready · 01/09/2019 09:56

I think that attending (peaceful) protest is a positive thing to do. The government will ignore it though because it contradicts the narrative that brexit is the 'will of the people', with the implication that the whole country is on board with the idea of leaving the EU whereas that is clearly nonsense.

akerman · 01/09/2019 22:17

I'm in France and from here the protests didn't look like a damp squib at all. They looked absolutely briilliant. Passion and determination and people fighting for parliamentary sovereignty in over 80 towns and cities from Bodmin to the Shetlands, from Malagar to Berlin. Well down, UK.

Saddler · 01/09/2019 22:20

The great unwashed mouth pieces out on the streets annoying normal folk.

akerman · 01/09/2019 22:28

No. They all looked nice and clean. And good-natured. And reasonable. I can see that might not be everyone's cup of tea.

I think you missed the word 'rabble' as well...

The thing is - people can see who is taking part in these demonstrations and see that they aren't as you described. They are in fact, normal folk.

Saddler · 01/09/2019 22:38
