To think there will be riots?

Announced on the news that boris johnson may suspend parliament to reduce the chance of mps being able to block a no deal brexit allowing him to democratically force the uk to leave the EU.

Am i wrong in thinking if this goes ahead there may be serious protests and maybe even riots in london and all across the country to force the governments hand?

The Government negotiated the exit from the treaties and Brexiteer MPs exercised their judgement to kill the WA by voting not to Leave
Stop repeating this lying revisionist history. The WA was not solely defeated by Brexiteers - massive numbers of all parties voted it down. Stop lying - this was recent history, it's easy to look up.

DogInATent · 28/08/2019 13:50

@Graphista
*"The British don't do riots, they put the kettle on. Occasionally there's a mass outbreak of Sports Direct looting, but not over political procedural matters."

How old are you? Too young to remember the poll tax riots? 2001 riots? Geez even the 2011 London riots?*

Old enough to know that the Poll Tax riots were only after the implementation had started (remember, it was implemented in Scotland before England) and there was evidence of the impact it had. And the 2011 riots were not over a matter of Parliamentary procedure.

@Peanutbuttericecream
Really interested to know if you're ok with his plans to privatise the NHS then? And reduce fooding standards?

Wehttam · 28/08/2019 13:51

suzeyshoes lies of media and the politicians who sold this pipe dream, misinforming and not correcting large swathes of the population.

Alexalee · 28/08/2019 13:51

Well according to project fear 3 million jobs would be lost by just voting leave... haven't lost any jobs at all since the vote... how bizarre
Could it be that the remain side werent really telling the truth too?

The ERG voted against the WA. It would have been carried if they hadn't. The problem is that whilst the populace may be split on the basis of leave vs. remain it's much more complicated in parliament. The ideological split within the conservative party saw both extremes agreeing with each other that the WA wasn't acceptable to them.

Alexalee · 28/08/2019 13:54

There are a lot of people who seem to think brexit will turn this country to shit.
Can I ask if any of you have planned to leave and live in a 'better' country? If you really think it will be so bad I would have thought you would all have made plans to

justasking111 · 28/08/2019 13:54

The NHS is pretty stuffed in Wales. Had two letters within a month. Glaucoma clinic letter. Don`t worry if we are not seeing you, if you are worried check with an optician. So my check ups are now not being done, no monitoring whatsoever any more.

A mole my GP looked at and referred me. Letter back, unless your GP thinks it is cancer go away we only treat cancer cases.

familycourtq · 28/08/2019 13:55

Let's see your working on this - are you forgetting all the non-ERG Tories, Labour, Independent and other parties who voted against the WA?

Malbecfan · 28/08/2019 13:56

To all those stating that people voted Leave, get over yourselves, STOP. 17.4m people might have voted Leave, but as someone else has said, that was on a spectrum of being outside the EU and not necessarily a no-deal scenario. What about the 50m people who didn't? Let's assume that 20m were children and ineligible to vote (my teens were disgusted that they didn't get a vote yet older people who wouldn't necessarily live to see it did). That leaves 30m who didn't vote Leave. Hardly a majority now is it?

I've just rung my MP as directed by a campaign on social media and am awaiting a call back. I'm disgusted by the way his party has behaved. I'm happy to protest - I've done it before and will do so again.

lolaflores · 28/08/2019 13:56

milicentbystander not making it up per say but perhaps not understanding or appreciating the broader sentiments currently in Ireland that threaten not only the economy and political stability that has been hard won. Whoever in a Dublin univesity shrugged and said it wasn't an issue has perhaps a narrow view of potential outcomes.
Thats more what I am saying.

Alexalee · 28/08/2019 13:56

Dogtent there are only around 70 members of the erg... so they didnt defeat it just by themselves, barely 10% of the votes

Alexalee · 28/08/2019 13:57

Malbecfan... I dont think you can just add the rest of the population to your side... they may have a different opinion to you

zackly · 28/08/2019 13:59

The British don't do riots, they put the kettle on.

As a non-Brit I have to say that this statement would be laughable to me if the issue wasn't so fucking serious.

It doesn't really matter what people are rioting about, there is an element of society (let's call them rebels without a cause) who love a chance for a bit of looting or even a spot of football violence. They don't care what the cause is. Do you honestly think that all of the May Day protesters smashing windows in years gone by were people with sincere political convictions?

I hope with all my heart that nothing serious is going to happen. But you obviously have no idea of how other countries perceive Brits if you think "Oh we don't riot, not us" Hmm.

Wehttam · 28/08/2019 13:59

alexalee is that you Nigel?

Why would we want to leave the UK, just because people are fearful of this possible mess does not mean they want to hand in their UK passport and move to Spain.

timshelthechoice · 28/08/2019 13:59

Why riot when you can steal food and goods to sell off someone? People will sleepwalk through this until they can't get food.

Cinammoncake · 28/08/2019 14:00

So everyone who doesn't want no deal brexit should leave the country. That sounds reasonable

ButterflyAles · 28/08/2019 14:00

Are you taking the piss? Where the fuck are people supposed to move to? Who do you think will take us? Europe? After we've told them to stick their freedom of movement up their arse?

Jesus wept.

amicissimma · 28/08/2019 14:00

Can anyone who is sure there will be shortages please explain to me why the British government will risk the welfare of its citizens by holding up imports from the EU entering the country?

If they are up to EU standards they will be no more potentially harmful on 1 November than they were on 30 October.

Presumably the checks on non-EU imports into the UK will be the same in November as they are today, or is there a reason why that will change?

Cinammoncake · 28/08/2019 14:01

People will sleepwalk through this until they can't get food.

Yes. Being hangry will cause riots if nothing else.

Milicentbystander72 · 28/08/2019 14:01

Lola, fair enough but I was just providing an anecdote, like others were doing about loosing jobs or being scared of loosing jobs.

I do realise that an anecdote does not a statistic make Grin

Alexalee · 28/08/2019 14:01

Wehttam if you think it's going to be so bad why wouldnt you have looked to move... genuinely intrigued by the answer
Remainers seem to think brexit with no deal is apocalyptic, bif I believed what most of them say I would have moved abroad straight after the vote

Alexalee · 28/08/2019 14:02

Butterfly... theres a while big wide world outside of europe

Alexalee · 28/08/2019 14:02

Whole

DogInATent · 28/08/2019 14:03

@alexalee
Can I ask if any of you have planned to leave and live in a 'better' country?
Yes. But I've been waiting to see whether the adults in Parliament could manage a sensible compromise. And I've been watching to see whether the bigotry, hatred and racism in society would subside. Looks like I gambled the wrong way and it's time to put the plans into action.
