To think there will be riots?

Announced on the news that boris johnson may suspend parliament to reduce the chance of mps being able to block a no deal brexit allowing him to democratically force the uk to leave the EU.

Am i wrong in thinking if this goes ahead there may be serious protests and maybe even riots in london and all across the country to force the governments hand?

No there won’t be. The British just put up and shut up. God only knows why but The Tories are adored no matter what they do.
The proof is it votes since 2010.

jasjas1973 · 29/08/2019 21:36

The problem is the middle-classes have lived with this societal unfairness quite happily for years, because it suited them. The moment they realised that some other sections of society may not vote the way they wanted them to in the referendum, they became furious. Read this thread for many examples of said fury

Ok, so let's say you are correct, how does Brexit fix inequality in anyway whatsoever?
Brexit is the wrong answer to the right question.

I ve always wanted to reduce inequality because it makes society better as it tends to reduce crime and social exclusion.

No point being rich if you have to live in gated communities.

howwudufeel · 29/08/2019 21:55

Scifi Nothing vile about my response. You are clearly anything but working-class and can’t grasp how fundamental inequalities in the UK which have existed for generations have led to this cluster fuck of a situation.

SciFiRules · 29/08/2019 22:06

@howwudufeel
How would you know what class I am?
I'm a son of a carpenter and a shop assistant and joint the forces because the industry I started in closed down. I went on to work back in engineering but in a different sector. How am I middle class?
How do you define "middle class

busyhonestchildcarer · 29/08/2019 22:07

It is so sad.We were all there during the referendum yet have forgotton what this entailed.We were told it would be easy to leave with a deal.We were told the money we would then spend on the NHS.We were there and we know this to be true.We know the vote was leave or remain but we also know we voted based on what we were told and believed.Therefore to simply state it was leave on any terms is not true.The remain campaign for the referendum was poor.They believed it was a formality and were proven wrong.We also know we elect MPs to serve us.We voted them in.Their duty is not only to constituents but to deliver what they believe is better for our country.We voted for these people also because we trusted them to do right by us.The % difference was too small and left a mess and a broken split country.I can say I certainly wasnt particularly knowledgeable on the EU but know far more now and absolutely know I made the right decision.We are diving into an abyss.We are gambling our country away and putting our childrens futures at risk.Lets stop this madness

SciFiRules · 29/08/2019 22:08

@howwudufeel
If I were muddle class whey do you want to hurt me and my children instead of going after oportunities for your own family?

howwudufeel · 29/08/2019 22:09

I don’t give a shit what class you are Scifi.

SciFiRules · 29/08/2019 22:11

@howwudufeel
Your have neatly demonstrated my point that leads es hate to be called thick yet can't demonstrate or articulate a single benefit ofrom Brexit. Instead they are just angry and don't have the capacity for logical thought.

Riots? This is the U.K. you know?

Anything from the other side, Clavinova? (Loyalist activity NI)

General criminal activity - drugs, gangsterism and intimidation!

SciFiRules · 29/08/2019 22:19

@howwudufeel
Are you drinking excessively? Apart from venting an excess of vulgar profanity did you have a point when you initially attacked me?

howwudufeel · 29/08/2019 22:19

Completely sober.

justasking111 · 29/08/2019 22:20

No excuse then imo. Calm down or this thread may be pulled.

SciFiRules · 29/08/2019 22:45

I don't think we will see large riots. The real problem is the reduction in living standards and oportunities. These reductions will, as always, be felt hardest by the people and areas of the country that are already struggling. The welfare state will have to contract so expect even less of a safety net. I'm just hoping to keep my children fed and hang on to the house.

angell84 · 29/08/2019 22:48

There is no "class."

WeshMaGueule · 29/08/2019 22:52

Oh ffs the people MAJORITY voted to leave just let them get on with it

Incorrect. About 25% of the population voted to leave.

Gbtch · 29/08/2019 22:55

Suzeyshoes- I do not follow Farage so I don’t know if I sound like him but I doubt it as I wanted to stay in the EU.
Here are some positives
first- we are following the democratic vote. We should never sanction further votes until we get the result we want. And we didn’t. That’s good
Second is that we have been offered a EU deal to leave that has been voted out by our democratically elected government. 3 times. That too is good
Third is that in spite of the country being split on this vote and some very vocal and powerful people trying to stop its implementation- we have leaders who are dedicated to carrying out the democratic vote of the people. That is so very good
Democracy has its faults as minorities struggle to be heard. But that is another discussion for another time. For now we should be proud that our country is defending our democracy against some considerable odds.

Riots? This is the U.K. you know?

One upon a time (August 2011 to be exact) there was a Mayor Named Boris. One day he went on holiday and this happened whilst he was away. In the end he had to abandon his holiday early
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_England_riots

Mr Johnson decided to buy 3 water cannons for use for a future possible riot.

Unfortunately for Mr Johnson, he was a pillock when he ordered these at a cost of £322,000 as he didn't check if they were usable in London. They were later sold for scrap at a loss of £300,000
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-46258584 AND www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/nov/19/boris-johnson-unused-water-cannon-sold-for-scrap-at-300000-loss

Reasons for the Riots are still being examined - it seems to be a combination of things combined with copy cat violence led by social media. Not one singular event.

Interestingly if you look up the history of Riots in this country, an overly heavy handed approach by law enforcement is very often the spark for underlying and simmering social fractures and tensions which have remained hidden just under the surface.

Brexit might not be the thing to set it off on its own, but a series of events stemming from no deal are very viable.

If you look up 'Riots in the UK' there is a fair old track record of them over the decades and centuries. Not in the Cotswolds perhaps but certainly they are not that rare either.

No deal does provide a real flash point. And yes we can and do have Riots in the UK.

Raindrops2019 · 29/08/2019 22:59

@Clavinova - gosh I hope things move forward there, not back.

justasking111 · 29/08/2019 23:10

If there are riots in London I can see a lot of trainers coming up for sale on E Bay, gumtree, etc.

We do not hear about the Paris protests now there seems to be a general media silence on it. I suspect the same may happen with any protests in the UK. Only on twitter will you get a sense of what is happening and where.

Suzeyshoes · 29/08/2019 23:19

@Gbtch
So let me recap. Your 3 reasons basically amount to 1: that we are a democratic country (let's not start on the question of the legality of the referendum itself which in turn would cancel out that democracy). Isn't it ironic then that that democracy is being achieved by destroying one of our key democratic institutions. Far from making me happy, this makes me sad for my country and worry what else this government is capable of. What happens when Johnson decides to put the NHS up for sale to Trump in the name of making a deal? Still happy because he's exercising his democratic right?

Unfortunately, this is the key issue with brexit. Half the country works with ideology. The other half works with tangibles.

Ideology is a wonderful thing but we are all different and it's not an 'idea' that is going to make me and many others happy. It's a job, food, medicine, safety, money, freedoms and so on. You can't live on democracy, especially one that has been won in this way.

KennDodd · 29/08/2019 23:38

In answer to the OP question. Yes, I think we will have rioting. I think they'll be after Brexit has happened and the consequences have begun to bite. I think they'll be long running, country wide and very difficult to stop. Maybe when the blue passports start arriving (giving fewer opportunities and rights to the holders) people will think it was all worthwhile and that'll stop the riots?
