Announced on the news that boris johnson may suspend parliament to reduce the chance of mps being able to block a no deal brexit allowing him to democratically force the uk to leave the EU.

Am i wrong in thinking if this goes ahead there may be serious protests and maybe even riots in london and all across the country to force the governments hand?

I am happy I have made my point Auld You’re still an utter hypocrite for using lazy and offensive stereotypes.

MamaFlintstone · 29/08/2019 20:36

What’s wrong with being middle class, when did that become an insult? It’s odd how hatred for the middle class apparently doesn’t extend to the actual elite who are pulling the strings on this and making a fortune from others’ misfortune.

Oscarsdaddy · 29/08/2019 20:40

I have to agree with the OP as this was my first thought

I’m of an age when I recall the Brixton riots in the early 80’s and of course the Poll Tax riots a decade later

Sensible people wouldn’t riot but I’m afraid sensible people are these days few and far between and for some it’s just an excuse to bring in rent a mob

Gbtch · 29/08/2019 20:40

For goodness sake! We had a democratic vote three years ago. It didn’t turn out as I and many others wished but that’s democracy!
We should all be over the disappointment by now and forging ahead to make the best of what we are faced with.
We are a great country. We should all be proud of that. We will not only survive but thrive if we can get over our disappointment and push for positive.
We are tough, hard working, strong people. Believe in your self and your country men and women. Stop the doom and gloom.
Be positive, as we always were, and we will prosper.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 29/08/2019 20:42

Why are we still doing the

Leaver = working class Remain = middle class thing

howwudufeel · 29/08/2019 20:43

Mama The problem is the middle-classes have lived with this societal unfairness quite happily for years, because it suited them. The moment they realised that some other sections of society may not vote the way they wanted them to in the referendum, they became furious. Read this thread for many examples of said fury.

pikapikachu · 29/08/2019 20:49

WE would have been on the upturn by now if we had left on time.

JRM said it will take 50 years before we recover.

justasking111 · 29/08/2019 20:56

72.2% of the population voted in the referendum. Why did the others not vote.

Clavinova · 29/08/2019 20:57

KennDodd

Lyra McKee was killed by a resurgent/reborn IRA.Now the increase of IRA activity since the referendum could be a coincidence, it seems too much of a coincidence to me though.

Lyra McKee was killed by a stray bullet - if there has been a resurgence, it obviously started before the referendum -

'Real IRA activity in 2015':
21 April: A bomb was thrown at a PSNI land rover in the New Lodge area of North Belfast. It exploded in mid-air, damaging a nearby car.[220] The New IRA claimed responsibility.[221]
27 April: A bomb exploded outside the offices of the Probation Board at Crawford Square in Derry, following a telephoned warning. The blast damaged the building and nearby vehicles.[222] The New IRA claimed responsibility and said it also planted an "anti-personnel device" nearby, targeting members of the security forces.[221]
3 May: Two small bombs partially exploded at the perimeter fence of a British Army Reserve base (Caw Camp) in Derry.[223]
18 June: The New IRA was blamed for planting a booby-trap bomb under the car of a married couple, both of whom are PSNI officers, in Eglinton. It was found and defused by the security forces.[224]
14 August: A firebomb exploded in the back of a post van parked inside Palace Barracks, Holywood, a British military base which is home to MI5 in Northern Ireland. The firebomb destroyed the van and set nearby vehicles and garages on fire.[225]
26 November: A PSNI vehicle was riddled with automatic gunfire, fired from an AK-47, on Rossnareen Avenue, West Belfast.Several rounds shattered the bulletproof glass but failed to penetrate it.The New IRA claimed responsibility.[226]
25 December:The group fired shots at police in north Belfast.[227]

@MamaFlintstone and @Wehttam sorry to go back to first few pages at this point, but I’m only reading the thread now.

That’s such a good point - I don’t know of a single person (apart from some Tory MPs) who ever gave a shit about being in the EU before they were told by Farage et al that the EU was responsible for everything that was wrong in the country. Nobody really gave a crap, apart from laughing at a few ‘news’ stories about straight bananas.

Jazzybeats · 29/08/2019 21:02

It’s possible OP. This isn’t about leave or remain. This is about an unelected prime minister taking a unilateral decision to bypass our parliament (the seat of our democracy) to push his own agenda through without any scrutiny.

It’s the kind of action you might expect in a developing world dictatorship. Not in supposedly one of the worlds leading democracies.

Suzeyshoes · 29/08/2019 21:02

@Gbtch Positivity is a great thing but doesn't actually solve any of the issues. You sound like Farage and his followers. Do you think that 'belief' will solve the shortages? And the Northern Island problem? And the country tipping towards the far right and xenophobia? Many people are already suffering and more are to come. How do they put on a positive face? Please, show me what is positive about the situation right now...

Raindrops2019 · 29/08/2019 21:04

@Clavinova. Anything from the other side, Clavinova? Am curious, that’s all - not interested in taking sides online but in the interest of balance.

Reallyevilmuffin · 29/08/2019 21:05

I would consider taking to the streets if Brexit is revoked.

dementedma · 29/08/2019 21:07

Following recent developments, OP Yellowhammer has been activated and Reservists are now being actively deployed in the UK.

Anyone who still has their head in the sand, needs to take it out. Now.

CorBlimeyGovenor · 29/08/2019 21:08

When you look at history and mass protests, the success of them is almost always down to the weather! Hot summers day/evening = riots. Pouring rain and people = often can't be arsed! The weather honestly is the biggest determinant.

MamaFlintstone · 29/08/2019 21:11

howwudufeel the actual demographics of the Leave vote don’t hold up with what you’re saying though.

The working-class betrayal narrative is very convenient for the likes of Farage but it’s not born out by the evidence.

PortiaCastis · 29/08/2019 21:11

I read that operation Yellowhammer has been activated today WTF is going on?

Moo5ele55 · 29/08/2019 21:12

We are not a great country and have very little to be proud of. Don’t think we’re that strong either, just divided which is only going to get worse. Pretending to be positive when there is little to be positive about really isn’t going to stop the shit from hitting the fan.

PersonaNonGarter · 29/08/2019 21:13

Hi @MumsnetHQ please can Brexit stay on the Brexit board? Active convos was a nightmare after the referendum...

Kolo · 29/08/2019 21:16

We were told back in March that if we didn’t leave the EU then, the leavers would be rioting. That didn’t happen.

Loopytiles · 29/08/2019 21:17
Hmm
user1467019428 · 29/08/2019 21:18

When anyone brings up the referendum result it says it was voted for democratically - yes - at that time. Circumstances have changed; lies have been found out etc. People promise to stay married for life but change their mind after a year or two. It’s very possible, even likely, that another referendum now could produce a different result!

SciFiRules · 29/08/2019 21:31

@howwudufeel
Your vile response is exactly the sort of logical rambling I was highlighting!
I'm working class, I get up every morning and go to work. I work in an office setting now but my background was manufacturing. I've done well from the UKs EU membership as has the country. The wrongs of our society fall squarely on the shoulders of our politicians not the EU. You seem he'll bent on hurting anyone you perceive as better off than you rather than trying to better your lot in life - that is truley awful. Is your definition of middle class "anyone with a job and a GCSE"?
