I'm a humble cleaner. I have a fairly wealthy client who is moving out of the area soon. She's been a great client with a nice DH and two lovely LO's under 4 yrs. On their praises and recommendations they've put a fair bit of work my way.

I want to buy them a leaving gift that's not just blatant cheap tat that won't interest them, but also something that's achievable on my modest income. And also nothing too heavy or bulky as they've got enough to cart over in the move!

Your help would be much appreciated MNers. What can I buy for them??? Do I buy individual gifts or one family gift?

HELP!

A jigsaw of their old area would be something they can do as a family and a thoughtful gift. Coasters with a map on are good too. That sort of thing sounds exactly along the right lines, check the sites that do that and pick something.

If you have a photo of you with them then that would be lovely on a card (e.g. Moonpig). Or a picture of their old house.

Honestly op, if they're as lovely as you say they are, a card will mean more to them than anything else you can get them. It's so nice of you to even think about getting them something, they won't expect anything.

nice card though with a nice message,

Just checking that you are thinking of a card with your own handwritten message. You could say exactly what you said in your original post. Please don't think that a card with a printed message would be anything like as touching as your own words.

Some really nice hand soaps. Floris or crabtree & evelyn, or Neal's Yard.

Dieu · 27/08/2019 21:28

A good quality candle is a good shout.

Dieu · 27/08/2019 21:30

Oh, and I didn't think you were allowed to fly with seeds or plants.

Howlovely · 27/08/2019 21:31

I had a similar dilemma a while ago and I gave a kilner jar full of all the dry I gradients needed to make flapjacks with simple instructions written on a parcel tag attached, with a mini wooden spoon, by a ribbon around the neck of the jar. Nearly ten years and many other gifts later it still gets mentioned.

Lovely jam

RedRose55 · 27/08/2019 21:37

A card and a small box of chocolates. M&S do lovely small chocolate boxes under £6

I think ASOS do gloves that you can scroll on your phone so no more cold hands whilst you text in the winter hurrah.

treeplop · 27/08/2019 21:39

Have milk, coffee, tea and some nice biscuits sent to their new house on the day they move in, priceless!

lucylouis · 27/08/2019 21:40

Our cleaner writes us the most lovely notes and on my birthday hand decorated a notebook. Was so so thoughtful!

rededucator · 27/08/2019 23:08

I love the coasters! They are personal, show thought and easy to travel with. They'll get used every day and make them smile each time!

alwayscoffee · 28/08/2019 00:02

A shrub for the new garden. Easy to maintain and it will remind them of you every time it flowers.

Witchlight · 28/08/2019 00:53

Are you good at baking cakes? A home-made cake and card would be lovely.

Myshitisreal · 28/08/2019 01:18

Goodness some of these ideas I'd literally be like wtf if I got most of these 😂.

For me, a voucher for where they are moving to sounds fabulous, or an easily transportable family game. Also a card of course with kind words. Bananagrams is an amazing game for all ages and is the size of a pencilcase so no real burden to travel with. I'm sure whatever you pick will be fabulous ♥

Downunderduchess · 28/08/2019 01:22

Perhaps bake something for them, that's a lovely personal gift, with a card. I would think that was quite thoughtful.

Downunderduchess · 28/08/2019 01:24

Oops sorry Witchlight I didn't see your post. I agree!

Amcor · 28/08/2019 01:27

The most expensive of something that is small! Like coffee, chocolates or biscuits. People rarely buy those things for themselves no matter how much money they have, so they are a treat.

My DS lives in England now but was born in Vancouver. He has a small framed map of B.C. cut out in the shape of a heart with a circle around Vancouver. The heart is mounted on some matting. You can also get little hearts to stick on things. I just made a birthday card for the boater in our family using a similar idea, with a nautical map background and a little heart beside Vancouver.

Every time I see that picture when I am in the UK, it gives me the warm fuzzies, and I didn't give it to him!

You could easily do this with a map of England and a small frame. They might like that if they are moving far away.

You are so very thoughtful. I am sure they are really going to miss you.

DumpTrump · 28/08/2019 03:21

If they're moving abroad then no wine, biscuits, honey etc. They won't be able to pack foodstuffs in their container. Someone also suggested a candle and I would also avoid those as you are normally advised not to pack those in a shopping container as they can melt.

I think a nice card with some thoughtful words, a gift connected to the place they are moving from (tea towel, photo book etc) and a book each for the children.

Harriedharriet · 28/08/2019 03:30

A map. great idea.
We got some as a gift that the person had laminated and we used as place mats. Love them 10 years later!

Derbee · 28/08/2019 04:10

I think a good quality tea towel from the local area would be nice - something to remind them of where they lived, and also practical. They’ll think of home, and you every time they use it 😀

CheeseChipsMayo · 28/08/2019 04:31

Deffo not wine-the people i work with have it delivered on order when needed&same with food thats delivered from speciality deli's ..a nice card &well chosen words are all thats necessary.

Di11y · 28/08/2019 07:03

I love the coasters.

LellyMcKelly · 28/08/2019 07:14

I love the glass jar full of sweets idea, along with a nice card.
