...to ask you to tell me what to buy for a rich person?

I'm a humble cleaner. I have a fairly wealthy client who is moving out of the area soon. She's been a great client with a nice DH and two lovely LO's under 4 yrs. On their praises and recommendations they've put a fair bit of work my way.

I want to buy them a leaving gift that's not just blatant cheap tat that won't interest them, but also something that's achievable on my modest income. And also nothing too heavy or bulky as they've got enough to cart over in the move!

Your help would be much appreciated MNers. What can I buy for them??? Do I buy individual gifts or one family gift?

HELP!

Chocs!

demelza82 · 27/08/2019 19:18

A donation to charity in their name

2018SoFarSoGreat · 27/08/2019 19:23

a card and some sweets/biscuits/chocolates. Even rich people love sweet things (:)) and the card will mean the world.

Not expensive, but meaningful. That's what matters.

ConstanzaAndSalieri · 27/08/2019 19:24

What about a moving day gift box? Some biscuits, colouring in stuff or a book for the children, and some teabags? You could also put in a couple of cleaning things if so inclined... thoughtful, appropriate and cheap.

Bubblysqueak · 27/08/2019 19:27

Definitely a nice card and then a small gift for the children, a personalised teddy or something?

MrsRantyPants · 27/08/2019 19:30

SnuffleBadger: Are they moving out of the area?
They're actually moving out of the country. All their stuff will be sent abroad via a shipping container. So I think its maybe best I get them something they can fit in with their ordinary plane luggage. So breakables are out of the question really, and not flowers as she can't take them on a plane and they'd be dead on arrival anyway! or anything that can melt!
Could you get them something that will remind them of the local area or is at least locally produced? Hmm, yeah, that's something to think about. Good idea.

The suggestions of books for the kids could be a good idea, they do like stories. I think they already have all the usual popular/well-known ones though, but will have a nosy when I'm next there.

Merryoldgoat: I’d only want edible homemade stuff
Sadly, I can't cook or bake for shit

PuzzledObserver: She gave us two squat glass storage jars filled with sweets Sorry to sound thick because I am! but what's a squat jar?

CTRL: Most rich people I know love a good wine Tbh I don't think they really drink alcohol. Since I've known them they've had the same two bottles of standard brand gin/vodka in a little cupboard and they're still untouched.

I will definitely buy a nice card though with a nice message, just wanted to give a little gift too. Thanks for the suggestions so far, I'll have a think on them...

I would also go with the card and something local like honey or a kitchen towel with local landmarks (it’s a thing where I am from).

Moving day packs sound perfect. Can you put them in a canvas bag from your area that they can then use in their new country

Scentsandsensible · 27/08/2019 19:39

if It’s an overseas move how about something very British - like nice teabags, or a selection of jams and marmalade’s

Justkeeprollingalong · 27/08/2019 19:43

Squat jar is probably a Kilner Jar. But they are quite heavy. I would go with a card. Maybe some packets of seeds for their new garden?

MrsRantyPants · 27/08/2019 19:53

What about something like this for the adults? Using a map of their current British town?

Love the moving day pack idea for the kids! Thank you

Plant a tree for them? I would love that personally. Are they ecologically minded people?

myself2020 · 27/08/2019 20:07

A plant? Indoors or outdoors.
and a nice card
don’t give wine, tastes can differ a lit.

Thesuzle · 27/08/2019 20:08

Get them sponsorship of a goat in Africa

myself2020 · 27/08/2019 20:09

just saw the “leaving country” bit - any local sweets etc you can think of?

badg3r · 27/08/2019 20:12

Yes I like the coasters!!!

MrsRantyPants · 27/08/2019 20:12

Not sure where I'd do that. But no, they're really not the eco types tbh and I can just imagine the Confused looks on their face if I presented them with a tree. Especially one they can't actually take with them.

It's a fab gift for those passionate about the environment and nature, and I've no doubt they'd still thank me for it. But I think they'd giggle about it once I'd left and think I was mad.

A hanging crystal. They're always pretty and suit any decor.

The only place I’d want a hanging crystal is in the bin Wink

Something quickly consumable and not another thing to pack, like wine or chocolates would be appreciated if they are moving out of the country, If it was me I wouldn’t want an ornament of any kind, and they probably have enough toys/kids books already

TheBrockmans · 27/08/2019 20:55

A print of a local landmark or you could commission someone on fiveer to do a picture of their house (assuming it is a nice house) or a pet.

Roussette · 27/08/2019 20:59

Take a picture of their house or somewhere local to them you know they'd like reminding of. Get it developed. Then order a frame and mount from e-frame (internet company) and frame it. Cost could be under a tenner depending on size.

I've done this before for someone who moved out the area, I took a picture of our local pub which is really picturesque (and where they went a lot!). They loved it

Pieceofpurplesky · 27/08/2019 21:00

Could you get a voucher for something where they are going - a local cafe or restaurant (you could google where they are going abroad and find out). In the card you could say it was a treat away from moving
