Just that really...

My FIL does lots of carpentry and I love it. I’ve been looking at a few easy projects to try and I’m reasonable handy so can use basic tools etc.

I also sew a bit, bake, and want to do more myself to my home.

I don’t have masses of time though so it’s slow going.

How do you fit it all in?

I have so much I’d like to do and not nearly enough time.

People like it when I give them knitted stuff (hats, scarves, gloves, socks, blankets) cos I’m fucking good. I like having a hobby that you can really get better at over time and set yourself goals with, for me I like making cos I can refine my process and improve. I want to get into dressmaking cos I want to go on sewing bee I want to be able to make nice clothes i actually want i my size. It will take a while though I know!

PhDone · 26/08/2019 21:49

I woodwork! (and knit)

Made a bedside table in gcse DT lol, but my first grown up project was a shelf unit thing (like a big wall-mounted whatnot) - bought myself a jigsaw to make it then gave the shelf to dh as a birthday present.
Then I made a pair of bedside tables, because I couldn't find what I wanted anywhere.
recently I made a chicken house and run for the garden!

Having a dedicated space helps, I have most of the garage as a workshop.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 26/08/2019 21:49

I sold some knitting patterns when I was at University. Made some money out of it.

WildCherryBlossom · 26/08/2019 21:58

I share your pain with the head full of ideas and not enough time to do it all. I make all sorts of stuff. I knit, sew, upholster. I make quilts, soft furnishings, clothes etc. We also grow a lot of our own fruit and veg. Some is cooked for immediate consumption, some is frozen or made into jams, marmalade etc.

I cannot crochet though. And although I love the look of some crochet projects, I think it's best I don't learn. I do not need another hobby.

And DH is great at carpentry (has made some of our furniture) so I'll settle for assisting him on projects rather than learning how to do it myself.

ImogenTubbs · 26/08/2019 22:04

I can sew, used to make bags but I've not done it in ages.

I mainly do craft bits with/for DD - I made a puppet theatre with cardboard puppets on lollipop sticks and a 'universe in a box' both of which I was quite proud of!

thecatsthecats · 26/08/2019 22:05

My sister made my wedding flowers out of origamid passages of books I chose. I made the flowers into a Christmas wreath.

Love making things - I think it's so good for your mental health.

Merryoldgoat · 26/08/2019 22:08

I’ve just spent a happy half-hour saving videos of my next projects. I just love it.

@ImogenTubbs

One of the very few things I’m disappointed in with my child is he doesn’t like crafts. We’ve got loads of stuff but he’s not interested at all. I had visions of homemade cards and all sorts but getting him to stick a shape down is like pulling teeth.

I bake.

I've got a huge pinterest board full of recipes I want to try but there are only so many baked goods a family of 4 can get through (until ds becomes a teenager and then I suspect I won't keep up).

I used to do lots more crafty things, like soap making, and I was trying to teach myself to knit, but I just don't have time at the moment.

Skinandbones · 26/08/2019 22:33

I make jewellery, it started off when my dds wanted charms for bracelets and I thought I could make that cheaper. So off it went, I now have a project box in my bedroom and make when I can. (arthritis in a couple of fingers).
It's amazing how some beads and charms can be turning in to stacking bracelets. I also bought some ribbons for my jewellery making but ended up doing hair bows.
What ever you do I hope you have fun.

changedtempforprivacy · 26/08/2019 22:38

I love making things, it's always been my favourite thing to do, even as a child. I've had a bash at most crafts, I won't give my creations away though only if people actually ask for them, although I have friends and family still using my creations 20 years on. However it's only people who make things who appreciate the time, effort and expense involved! These are real labours of love.
It's good for my mental health, I get dd involved, and I prioritise it. I have a cleaner as I don't like diy so I pay to get that done.
Some of my happiest childhood memories are of making things with my parents who both had very normal jobs but my mother knitted, sewed, taught cooking, etc and both gardeners and my father built from wood, metal, diy etc...they both encouraged me and it's consistently made me happy, I cannot wait to retire from my non creative job and have time to formally study ceramics, woodworking, metal working etc..

InMySpareTime · 27/08/2019 07:46

I sew story bags, puppets and props for my storytelling business, I have written 3 books, I make elderflower cordial and sell it to friends.
I bake lovely scones, and decoupage my clothes (mostly t-shirts for work).
I've turned my hand to a little carpentry, built a den for the DCs at the end of the garden, built a frame for a model railway round DS's room, made enormous crocodiles for work (then turned them into shelves).
I can make many things, and I really enjoy doing it!

sugarplumfairy28 · 27/08/2019 08:26

Merryoldgoat I am, I do have the advantage of a workshop, trying to get going on building a custom sized dining table with hinged lid to house DH's electric piano.

Owlsintowels · 27/08/2019 08:41

I do electronics Grin
I asked if anyone else did a while ago but got zero responses

I've made my DS a toy microwave, just need to perfect the turning plate motor. I'm looking for my next project, need something fairly simple and easy to do. DP supplements my circuits with woodwork where needed, and my cousin adds a bit of 3D printing

Need
More
Projects

It's great fun

I also knit and sew occasionally
And in theory I refurbish chairs (ie I did one once and have another on the to-do list)

I also have dabbled in pottery

And I cook! And garden!

Quite nice listing these all out. I'm a mathematician in my day job so I think handsy things in the evening keep me balanced as does watching shit loads of tv

Shebertherbert · 27/08/2019 08:47

I crochet, cross stitch, sew. I make cards and do stamping. I make jewellery. I also bake.
I make most of the christmas presents I give away.

MissB83 · 27/08/2019 08:55

@Owlsintowels the electronics sound excellent! I wish I had the skills to do something like that. I always thought I would have been a good programmer if we'd been taught it in school, I've got a very logical and methodical brain Grin

Lwmommy · 27/08/2019 08:56

I hobby crochet, knit and sew. Mainly things for my DD, made these last week for the warm weather

Owlsintowels · 27/08/2019 09:09

@MissB83 have a go! I'm not trained, I just poke about on the Internet and have finally had a tiny bit of success making something work! It's just like Lego but with another dimension or two.
I mostluy copy other people's projects, but once I get this motor nailed I'll have completed my first foray into my own development

I'll send you the links which got me started by pm. Plus bits are so cheap to get on ebay, you can have a go for a few £

Soldering not essential at all, certainly not while developing. Y

Tonnerre · 27/08/2019 09:12

I do knitting and crochet, mostly to have something to do with my hands whilst watching TV or just chatting to people. I find it therapeutic, and very rewarding when something turns out well. The trouble is that there's a limit to the number of knitted/crocheted things you can inflict on friends and relatives, so these days I do most of it for charity.

I'd love to be able to make more. I can lose myself for ages watching YouTube videos of things like carpentry, glasswork and metalwork, and have been loving watching The Repair Shop on TV. However, I don't actually think I'd be very good at that, so I stick to what I know.

CrowleysBentley · 27/08/2019 09:20

Craft wise I knit, crochet, do cross stitch and embroidery.

I do all of the DIY, and fixing of things in our house and have done since I left home at 16. If something needs doing, I read upon it (internet now, back in the early 90s when i left home it was a trip to the library), and give it a go. Everything from putting up shelves, to laying carpets, installing showers and tiling. Mostly out of necessity, I'm too skint to pay anyone to do things for me, and I actually quite enjoy it too.

CheeseChipsMayo · 27/08/2019 09:23

I love to cook for my DC who really love my lasagne, pies, burgers.all vegetarian-they keep joking i need to start a new business as mates love the stuff so much but im lazy/travel a fair bit with business i started yrs ago so do it for pleasure as i miss it when im stuck in hotels😯 years ago i used to modify charity shop dresses&tops etc..they got mad compliments, still have them all in storage lolGrinthe crazy party days!!

theruffles · 27/08/2019 09:39

I like to knit, sew, some cross stitch and make cards. I agree about having a lack of time to sit down and get on with projects, hence why it's taking me months to knit a jumper for myself from a vintage pattern! I usually have a couple of projects on the go but have been trying to make myself finish the things that have been in my project pile for ages. I have been trying to make presents for people more this year instead of buying them but it's difficult when you have a baby and work f/t. I don't really get a chance to knit until she goes to bed but I do try and snatch a bit of time on the commute to work or in naptime.

I also love foraging and making jams, chutneys and pickles. A lot of my maternity leave was spent making things in jam jars for Christmas presents. Homemade pickled onions are the best!

I really want to try some woodwork. I'm aiming to have a go at making a locks and latches board for my DD for Christmas.

Merryoldgoat · 27/08/2019 09:59

This thread is terrible.

I've now decided that I need to start making cards and I also need a workshop. I've been googling sheds all morning when I really ought to be actually working...

I crochet, hand-embroider/applique and enjoy paper cutting. Freebird was to celebrate the day of my divorce! :) I also do fancy letters to frame as pictures.

Love making cushions. The bunnies are appliqued onto some tweed.
