Just that really...

My FIL does lots of carpentry and I love it. I’ve been looking at a few easy projects to try and I’m reasonable handy so can use basic tools etc.

I also sew a bit, bake, and want to do more myself to my home.

I don’t have masses of time though so it’s slow going.

How do you fit it all in?

I have so much I’d like to do and not nearly enough time.

I think this is normal angst for those of us into making things isn't it? So many ideas and not enough time? Loads of unfinished projects hanging around? Even if you took away the time I'm spending on here right now... Smile

I tried a bit of woodwork once, and would love to have the time and energy to do more again. It's not likely to happen until kids have flown the nest, if then. It's not something women are encouraged to try, or at least it wasn't, and it was great being able to make something potentially useable. Getting hold of decent timber was a bit difficult though for a beginner without a clue, MDF is more obtainable and that put me off too.

Geraniumpink · 26/08/2019 19:34

lagatha, you can sell it to medical re-enactment groups - they’d love it!

JaceLancs · 26/08/2019 19:34

I bake n batch cook for friends
Knit and crochet
I bought a sewing machine but haven’t had the confidence to go beyond basic alterations n now not even thst

SpeedyShutter · 26/08/2019 19:35

I knit cuddly toys and am currently making some Xmas decs with sparkly yarn.

I can take a decent photo (not just of my children but still lifes and landscapes etc) and quite often print and frame them (I do go to a professional for the framing though) for the walls.

Ithinkmycatisevil · 26/08/2019 19:36

I make the odd crochet stuffed animal, I enjoy baking, but don’t do it as often as I used to.

SpeedyShutter · 26/08/2019 19:37

Dh & I also make jams, chutneys and pickled onions.

RezCowgirl · 26/08/2019 19:38

I'm more of a fixer or I repurpose stuff - not upcycling cos I hate that word. But I make stuff into other stuff rather than making new stuff. I've made a bench out of pallets, tables out of cable drums. Engraved glasses and made jewelry from old cutlery.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 26/08/2019 19:40

I make knitted and crocheted things- mostly hats, cardigans and baby blankets for the local hospital. I do cross stitch pictures, some of which are framed and on the walls in my house.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/08/2019 19:40

I love baking and cooking, I make my dc's birthday cakes and am quite known for my cakes now (although they are still amateur and not professional standard). I do the odd bit of furniture restorations and I've made Batman and Harry Potter bedside tables and chest of drawers for my dc. I make all my own Christmas cards every year and decorations. I like doing vintage-y stuff (eg planting aloe in vintage tea cups which were my gifts for every female family member last Christmas) and I can sew a few bits and bobs on my machine. I wouldn't say my makes were of any amazing standard though.

ReapersHowler · 26/08/2019 19:40

I do papercrafts - scrapbooking, journalling, cardmaking sort of thing. It's nice to make pretty things and feel accomplished Grin I do swaps with other people of our pretty creations.
I do different art stuff too, make planner charms, some clay work, rat hammocks and other basic sewing.

TweezerMay · 26/08/2019 19:43

Ooh I’d love to do some woodwork/carpentry. I don’t really have much space though. No garage or anything. My DD (5) is always making stuff though and has asked for a little carpentry set for Christmas. There’s a lovely set on amazon at the moment with a little saw, hammer, file etc so hopefully we’ll be able to make some bits together.

I mainly make...a mess. I’m into everything - knitting, sewing, painting, printing, you name it and I’ve probably got a bit of kit related to it 😁 I’ve got a photography darkroom set up but I haven’t done any of that for a while. I found a load of negatives when we cleared my nan’s house out and reprinted some of the photos for my dad’s Christmas present.

I’m quite handy and good at fixing things, so I do most of the DIY at home. I’d like to learn more, maybe like welding or electrics but I would worry about burning the house down.

TooManyPaws · 26/08/2019 19:45

I don't do anything for selling, but I grew up learning to sew, knit and embroider. I learned crochet at school, Dad taught me how to paint a house or whatever, and I can do basic bobbin lace. I'm lucky enough to have a sewing room with a large cutting table and my machines. I went to classes to learn to patchwork and quilt. I mainly crochet at the moment, doing small things to chill out at lunchtime at work and bigger things in the evening while watching TV.

I give most things a go, including DIY and upcycling furniture for the house.

Quail15 · 26/08/2019 19:47

I knit - mostly children's clothes but if you're a friend or family member you will probably have had a scarf and hat as a Christmas present Grin

I have done a little hand stitching/embroidery. I bake and make my own jams. I'm teaching myself to cake decorate - so far I have had mixed results.

I also make a lot of my own skin care - hand/ body scrubs, lip balm, body butter etc

I love making things from scratch although all these things are now limited to after DD goes to bed. I would love to learn some basic carpentry.

Biancadelrioisback · 26/08/2019 19:48

I can make a mess, a pig's ear, a mountain out of a molehill and other such party tricks

ThrowThoseCurtainsWide · 26/08/2019 19:49

I make so many things! There is never ever enough time and I have cupboards full of unfinished things, yet still start more Grin

Knitting and crochet are probably my main 'makes', I spend most evenings doing that in front of the TV.
I also sew, I'm pretty good at patchwork but haven't made anything for years. I have made clothes for myself and the DCs, and have a million ideas for things I'd like to make us. I also seem to have a good brain for visualising sewing patterns, eg I made this croc totally from an idea in my head and a blanket from dunelm. I've always wanted to do something along those lines.

I studied jewellery design / silversmithing at uni, but never did anything with it. I'm good at DIY, have made storage units from scratch before. Discovering that B&Q will cut sheet MDF to size was a game changer for that Grin

How do I find the time to fit it all in? I don't really have the time for it all. I guess making stuff comes above all but basic housework though. And I've always got some sort of knitting with me in case I get a chance to do some more to it!!

Lagatha · 26/08/2019 19:50

@Geraniumpink ooh really? That's interesting! I actually went to a Roman one a few weeks ago and there was a lady there who was doing it. First time I ever met anyone else who does it in RL

WelshMoth · 26/08/2019 19:50

I make drift wood trees and driftwood mobiles. I make candles and my own home made room spray (hate shop stuff - one of their ingredients is an irritant to my chest). Also make home made fudge. I'm
Pretty good at pottery so would love the chance to take that further but alas, teaching gives me little time to pursue this. Would also love to master crochet to make blankets but I'm rubbish at that!

ControversialFerret · 26/08/2019 19:52

I sew - mostly cushion covers and curtains and adjustments. I bake when I have time, including making bread. I grow my own herbs - I would do veg as well but finding time is a struggle at the moment.

I do all of my own hard landscaping and heavy work in the garden. Firing up the chainsaw when you've had a bad day, is a great stress reliever!

Next on my list is to learn to knit.

AuntieMarys · 26/08/2019 19:54

No.
I outsourced school uniform labelling to a 16 year old.
I can't sew, knit or make anything.

sackrifice · 26/08/2019 19:54

I have my own woodwork shed.

I have a home made work bench which is 5 small pallets on top of each other and screwed together. And painted black.

I have a plethora of woodwork tools and mostly use cut down pallet wood to make things like planters or seed trays for my seedlings.

I use it to cut down wood from the trees for firewood.

And I make little insect hotels and other garden stuff.

I also crochet and although I've had a haitus I will be back on that once my new varifocals come through.

I can sew and have a machine but again with the need for the up close glasses means I may get back into it when I have the new glasses through.

ScaryBunnyPainting · 26/08/2019 19:54

I knit, crochet, rag rug and needle punch. I can also do basic sewing - so I can hem, sew on buttons and patch up uniforms and I can run up curtains or cushions on a sewing machine although I’d prefer not to.

I’ll give most DIY projects a go. I wired in an outside plug in the garden today.

I make time for it by including my children. I’ve taught them to knit and crochet and if they want something new for their rooms I have them look on Pinterest to find a way to make it and we’ll try our best.

I also go to knitting club when my shifts fit around it. It’s basically just sitting in the pub with a bunch of people having a gossip, knitting (usually face cloths because they require zero concentration) and drinking wine.

My job is very intense and science/maths based and I find get very depressed if I don’t engage my creative side for more than a couple of weeks.

Ilovemyshoppingtrolley · 26/08/2019 19:55

I'm selling the scrunchies at the moment to friends but I am seriously thinking of putting them on Etsy and Instagram, probably facebook too! Got a little carried away and have made over 200 Grin

Sennedd · 26/08/2019 19:57

My niece keeps rats. Do you knit or crochet the rat hammocks please and where would I get a pattern?

Crochetymum · 26/08/2019 19:58

I crochet blankets, favourite thing ever. I tried to make cardigans but they ended up looking like skirts. I bought an amazing sewing machine but can't thread it without my mum helping,🤭, I get frustrated really quickly because things don't turn out the way I pictured them,.I've got alot of effort in me but it doesn't always work out then I get disheartened, I do cross stitch sometimes but that takes ages. I tried upcycling too, bought an old carved set of drawers from charity shop, sanded, painted it and I really enjoyed it, it's in my daughter's room and I'm always stroking it 😆. I tried the clay modelling stuff too, (fimo?) , As above , not enough patience and I wanted quicker results.
I've seen those pallet sofa things too they look really good, I'd like to try that but my partner watches me closely with his tools as he thinks I'm clumsy.
Just try something small first, funky side table, ooh and go on Pinterest,.loads of ideas on there.

Fedupofthedaily · 26/08/2019 19:58

I do cross stitch. Love it with a passion. Calms my anxiety. Do it when the kids are in bed :D
