Non-smelly fence/deck/garden furniture treatment products

During general conversation I mentioned to NDN that I am going to spend Monday painting/treating the wooden fences, garden furniture and deck. NDN looked quite agitated and asked if I could use a low odour product as she is having friends round Monday pm and evening (they will use her garden!) and thought the smell of 'creosote' would be unpleasant.

Do I just get on with it and use the cheap large bucket of stuff that I had already purchased (no idea what is smells like and how long it might smell for) or do I go and purchase something specifically non-smelly in the interests of good relations? If so, what products are best avoided for their stinkyness?

AIBU to ask what the 'etiquette' is for smells wafting from one's garden?

Just go ahead if it’s a good day for painting. Can’t say I’ve noticed any of the wood stain types being particularly smelly. Usually dry quickly anyway.
