AIBU to think Edinburgh is Brighton for grown ups?

I'm only teasing 🤣 I'm from Brighton myself and I find it interesting that lots of people seem to "graduate" to Edinburgh from Brighton. Any thoughts on why?

I'm considering moving back to the UK and have been pondering Edinburgh for awhile. Can anyone give me their thoughts on what it's like to live there? Also any locals know of good places along a train line with easy access to Edinburgh or "wilder" parts of the city (I'd like my cats to be able to roam like they can now)?

I live near Brighton and I loathe it with every fibre of my being. Edinburgh is wonderful.

DoesThisLookRight · 25/08/2019 14:43

I hate Brighton but love Edinburgh. I’ve only been a couple of times though so almost certainly overlooked the bad bits.

bluebeck · 25/08/2019 14:43

Well I love Brighton and would never live anywhere else Grin

FloatingObject · 25/08/2019 14:44

That's interesting @madcatlady, would you mind sharing what you hate and love about them so I can compare?

Edinburgh is a fantastic city but it's SO BUSY. Too busy for me to want to live there

Loopytiles · 25/08/2019 14:45

Edinburgh is too cold.

AravisTarkheena · 25/08/2019 14:51

Edinburgh is beautiful but genuinely cold and flats are expensive for what you can get. There aren’t really ‘nice suburbs’, not that I’ve ever really found anyway, you live in the city or you live in in some quite insalubrious areas around it. Or Stirling I guess. I’d imagine Glasgow as the grown up Brighton personally.

justanothernameonthewall · 25/08/2019 15:01

There are beautiful suburbs in Edinburgh!!! No other city can you still be within 25 mins of the city centre and yet be so close to such lovely countryside.

Edinburgh is busy at peaks but it's quiet and refined and friendly the rest of the time too!

Can you give me some names of suburbs for my next property porn-viewing session? Grin

I love Brighton and I'd never live anywhere else but the price to live here is extortionate

AravisTarkheena · 25/08/2019 15:12

Ooh well if there are nice suburbs I’d also be interested! I’ve only ever been through som pretty grim bits but I know that there are places like Balerno - are they nice?

Cosyjimjamsforautumn · 25/08/2019 15:14

Ive worked in both and though i loved my times there (both expensive) i couldnt spend another long cold dark winter in Edinburgh.

byebyebeautiful · 25/08/2019 15:15

Liberton is good for country-side/city links! And if you want to be even more rural, have a look at places in Fife - some parts are well served by train to Edinburgh, Burntisland, Kinghorn, Markinch etc

BrokenWing · 25/08/2019 15:16

I have a brother/SIL who have lived in Edinburgh for over 25 years. Up to 5-6 years ago I would say it was a brilliant place to visit for a few days. A place to really immerse yourself in everything it had to offer from history and culture to the buzz from a wide range of restaurants and pubs and very personal/friendly.

Way too busy and touristy now, it has lost that personal touch and really changed the city and the atmosphere. We rarely head into the centre or even the Haymarket now when we visit. We'll maybe go to a restaurant and head back to their house straight after instead of making a day/night of it and dropping into a few pubs before/after.

timshelthechoice · 25/08/2019 15:18

Too touristy and expensive now.

LoobyLou1976 · 25/08/2019 15:38

Born and bred in Edinburgh, there are plenty of nice places to live, but also some worse areas, just like everywhere! We also have the tram links now as well as the buses so its easier to get into the town.
Balerno has some very nice areas, as well as Corstorphine (where I'm from), and if you're very well off the town itself has some beautiful town houses. I live in West Lothian now and its just a 15 minute train journey to Waverley Station in Edinburgh.
It's a beautiful city. It's really only 'touristy' while the Fringe and Festival/Edinburgh tattoo are going on.
It is cold, but like most of Scotland, you get used to it.

Wormwoodm · 25/08/2019 15:38

Don’t move to fife! DH and I rented a flat in Dalry but Stockbridge is lovely.
We decided we wanted to buy and realised we would get way more for money over the bridge In fife. I hated it, pretty coast to visit for the day but totally different to Edinburgh. We sold 4 years later and lost 40 grand. We would have made money if bought in Edinburgh instead.

Frannyhy · 25/08/2019 15:56

Another Brighton fan - I love it there.

ratspeaker · 25/08/2019 15:59

The city centre is crowded atthis time of year, as it is every year at this time.
The trains running to Glasgow are notoriously overcrowded during the festival with random cancellations.
We dont really have a joined up rail service running to suburbs although the Borderes rail link has increased intrest in places like Stow and Galashiels.
The tram only runs from York Place to the airport.
Buses aren't too bad. Lothian buses webpage is the place to look for routes.

But we have 2 beaches one to the East ( Portobello/ Joppa area) and one west( Silverknowes/Cramond)

There is a lot of building going on around the city boundary, almost a new village being created at Shawfield, the same at Newcraighall.

One of my DD lives in Midlothian, plenty space for her half wild cat but still on a bus route into city, so thats Straiton, Loanhead, Bilston, Penicuik area. Again lots of new builds out there.

Look at ESPC website for an idea of house prices

CupCupGoose · 25/08/2019 16:01

I was born and grew up in Brighton. I love it so so much but could never in a million years afford to move back unfortunately.

Edinburgh is lovely too but no where will ever beat Brighton.

chasingseagulls · 25/08/2019 16:04

I have never, ever heard of a connection between Brighton and Edinburgh, and can't think of anything specific that would make a person liking Brighton want to move to Edinburgh over anywhere else? Both have lots to offer culturally, but in very different ways, the industries are different, the weather definitely different ends of the spectrum. Even the countryside looks different??

Blanca87 · 25/08/2019 16:04

East Lothian is lovely, Musselburgh has a beach and a 6 minute train ride. North Berwick is beautiful too but pricey accommodation. Portobello is lovely too.

Camomila · 25/08/2019 16:16

I've heard similar about Bristol...same hippy/lefty vibe but less youths!

I'm from Brighton, have tried living in various places across the South East, but came back home when DS was 2.5,
I love it (shame about the house prices though!)

Piffpaffpoff · 25/08/2019 16:21

You’ll not get a Brighton vibe in Fife. (Aberdour maybe at a push). Train service is awful too!

Portobello or Joppa would be my pick, but maybe not if your job is at the Gyle or RBS.
