AIBU to think Edinburgh is Brighton for grown ups?

I'm only teasing 🤣 I'm from Brighton myself and I find it interesting that lots of people seem to "graduate" to Edinburgh from Brighton. Any thoughts on why?

I'm considering moving back to the UK and have been pondering Edinburgh for awhile. Can anyone give me their thoughts on what it's like to live there? Also any locals know of good places along a train line with easy access to Edinburgh or "wilder" parts of the city (I'd like my cats to be able to roam like they can now)?

I think it's lost a bit of its edge. It used to have a but of a rough and ready charm, even a kind of seediness that made it quite appealing. Its managed to become simultaneously harder and more gentrified on my opinion, not sure how that happens.

Think locals are getting pushed further and further out to moulsecoomb and whitehawk and even Worthing, it was ever thus, but now to a greater extent. The result is the town itself I feel has become a little Disneyfied. I still like it though. It's just different.

I live in West Lothian in a commuter town. I love it here, grew up a few miles away, lived in London and north west before finally making it back. Look at east Calder if your budget allows, the calderwood development is lovely. Some beautiful houses in Bathgate and Armadale.

I know what you mean about the 2 cities. They're both very much their own place with a hugely distinct character, and funky and cool. So many other cities could be the same one.

Just back from Edinburgh for a few days at the you know what. Some bits of of feel like a painting by Escher. I walked along a street at ground level then realised I was crossing a bridge at 5th floor height. Turned a few corners and ended up 3 stories below where I wanted to be. Through a mysterious passage to find a castle. I love it. A bit like the maze-like Laines in Brighton.

There's no edge in Edinburgh OP and I speak as someone who has lived her whole life here. It's gentrified up the ying yang, apart from pockets of grinding poverty.

Are you mad! I’ve lived in both places and they are nothing alike. Edinburgh is like Bath. It’s very conservative. The festival is not representative of the city normally. It is a beautiful place... but god forbid you went to the ‘wrong school’.Brighton is kinda Corbynite Britain. Its a city of guardian readers. Very left wing and cool . Both are lovely but not comparable. The only thing they gave in common is high house prices.

I grew up in Brighton and moved back years ago to start a family after living in London and I love it here!

I too have never heard of the comparison with Edinburgh (which I've never been to) and they are at opposite ends of the country with very different climates.

Strangely it's Montreal, Canada that I've regularly heard compared with Brighton.

Love Edinburgh, Brighton is horrible.

Samcro · 25/08/2019 23:20

i LOVE Brighton its such a mix of everything.
maybe because I lived in surrey before

As someone who lived in Edinburgh for years, I can say the last 3 years sucks. It’s too much. The Fringe has gotten out of control. I have seen social media pics this year and in all honesty it would freak me out despite being used to crowds etc. The Council don’t give a shit as long as it makes money. Air b nb is also out of control. The folks in charge need to listen to
The Residents or Edinburgh. If you don’t, hell mend you. 😬

Brighton is grim. It really is. It's like the vapid, woke middle class all radiated to one central shit hole with angry birds, crap chips and uncomfy beaches. Then they all move to poets corner when a one bed for £965 a month suddenly seems a bit shit. So they go there for a 1.5 bed for £1200 a month instead. When really they're dreaming about Lewes.

Everyone I know who moved there is moving back to their home cities now. Or Bristol. Bristol is very trendy now too.

Brighton's nice in the winter when all the sun seekers who cannot think of another seaside resort descend on the city

FloatingObject · 26/08/2019 09:24

Andysbestadventure Ive been toying with the idea of Bristol too! Despite never having been 🤣
