AIBU to think Edinburgh is Brighton for grown ups?

I'm only teasing 🤣 I'm from Brighton myself and I find it interesting that lots of people seem to "graduate" to Edinburgh from Brighton. Any thoughts on why?

I'm considering moving back to the UK and have been pondering Edinburgh for awhile. Can anyone give me their thoughts on what it's like to live there? Also any locals know of good places along a train line with easy access to Edinburgh or "wilder" parts of the city (I'd like my cats to be able to roam like they can now)?

I love love love Brighton 💕

midsomermurderess · 25/08/2019 17:00

Nice suburbs: Trinity; Inverleith; the Grange; Liberton.

ZazieTheCat · 25/08/2019 17:05

Portobello, Joppa, Musselburgh, Balerno, Corstorphine, Currie

NovemberWitch · 25/08/2019 17:10

I really like Brighton, Bristol and Edinburgh, but they are very different.
No, Edinburgh isn’t freezing cold, but the weather can be dreich for months on end, and the haar rolling in off the sea gets into your bones.
So, I love the sun and the endless light in the sea and sky that Brighton offers, prefer Edinburgh for history and culture.
So I live in Brighton and visit other places!

I live in Edinburgh, and love it. It's really only busy during the Festival, and I personally can't wait for it to be over.

Sunbeam18 · 25/08/2019 17:15

South Queensferry is great, and 15 mins on the train into Waverley.
Your cats could roam in most parts of Edinburgh though, as long as you weren't on a busy main road

Elliebellbell · 25/08/2019 17:22

THeres a station at Kingsknowe. Direct train to Glasgow or into town (Haymarket). Quiet area just off Lanark Road within 5 minute walk to Colinton Dell, a huge wooded area. Houses aren't cheap though

reginafelangee · 25/08/2019 17:23

Edinburgh is lovely but very expensive to live in.

justanothernameonthewall · 25/08/2019 17:26

Float- Colinton, Morningside, Fairmilehead, Balerno, Corstorphine, Lasswade (depends where), Marchmont, Portobello.

Quite a mix of more urban and more rural in there. Also anywhere in East Lothian.

If you want more central then work in from Marchmont/ Morningside.

Hope that helps!

ImperfectTents · 25/08/2019 17:28

If you like Brighton and want to live in Edinburgh with cats try portobello.

Edinburgh has changed a great deal , and not for the better. It’s choked with traffic and very expensive. Property is very expensive and it’s hard to buy with the offers over system.
There is loads to do which is a bonus, particularly in the Winter. However the weather is generally damp, windy and cold.
The Winter is very dark.
East Lothian is lovely. There is lovely countryside and beaches within a shortish drive, but the bypass is choked with traffic much of the time.
Building new housing all the time which increases pressure on the roads etc. It’s reaching tipping point.
The Festival is horrendous. Hundreds of people descend with their cases. The streets are jammed with tourists and traffic jams.
It is a beautiful city but too many people and too much traffic.

HollysTeflonSeptum · 25/08/2019 17:42

I love them both but Brighton has the edge for me being closer to France.

I ❤️Brighton by the Sea.

There is no comparison to Edinburgh where I lived centrally years a go as a young post uni girl. I came there from London. I found the locals incredibly unfriendly, my salary was lower than London yet my expenses similar.

The long dark days and nights...

I fled after a year. Glasgow much more my cup of tea.

My daughter went to uni there. She loved the experience but moved immediately down south afterwards.

Brighton rocks

PurpleFlower1983 · 25/08/2019 17:48

My DH is from Brighton and would love to live in Edinburgh, it’s a strange phenomenon!

Ellabella989 · 25/08/2019 17:50

I grew up in Edinburgh and loved living there. Linlithgow is a lovely town on a regular train line into Edinburgh (think it takes about 20 mins). If you want to stay actually in Edinburgh but in the suburbs then Liberton, Buckstone, Balerno, Corstorphine and Cramond are all nice areas

LadyRannaldini · 25/08/2019 17:56

Edinburgh's a great place to live once the Festival lot have gone home.

reenon · 25/08/2019 18:00

I live in Brighton and have never known anyone to move to Edinburgh...?

Maybe Worthing or Shoreham but that's about it.

gavisconismyfriend · 25/08/2019 18:04

Lived in Edinburgh for 25 years. Depends on your budget, but plenty of lovely areas outside the centre - e.g. Trinity & The Grange (Expensive), Newhaven (less expensive). Leith has many nicer parts now and great eateries, independent shops etc. You’ll get more for your money outside the city and there are lovely villages in East Lothian that are commutable to the city. The dark evenings in winter don’t bother me, but it does rain a lot and the wind is something else. Scottish summers tend to be very mixed weather-wise so whilst Brighton has had weeks of sunshine and some very hot temps, we’ve had very little this year. Healthcare is devolved as is education, so some of the “reforms” that have affected RUK haven’t been implemented here which is a plus. On the other hand, difficult to say what might happen post-Brexit if there is another independence referendum..... Edinburgh isn’t as laid back as Brighton, but it is beautiful and has lots to offer culturally. I’d find it hard to live anywhere else......

TooManyPaws · 25/08/2019 18:04

I'm happily living in rural Fife, just a few miles from the M90 and about five miles from a station. My cats are very happy amongst the fields, stables and barns, and quite a few people nearby commute to Edinburgh. I would slit my wrists before living in the huge new build estates for the Edinburgh overflow though. Edinburgh is great out of the Festival though once the tourists and London luvvies are gone.

dementedma · 25/08/2019 18:12

I live in Fife. Love Edinburgh but too expensive for me and stuffed with tourists during the Festival when all the prices rocket. Morni gside, Corstorphine, Fairmilehead all nice suburbs.

lavenderandthyme · 25/08/2019 18:44

Ive only been to Brighton for a couple of days years ago, and absolutely loved it.

FloatingObject · 25/08/2019 20:36

I love Brighton too, but it's eye-wateringly expensive these days, and is becoming increasingly homogenous (IMO).

Both are great cities, I am fond of both.

I do think Brighton has got a bit run down in recent years though - think it has lost something.
