To ask what was the first food you gave your baby?

DD will be 6 months next week so will be starting weaning her onto solids.
What's the best food to start her on? We will be doing a mix of baby led and pureed food so have some of the pouches, but is it best to give her the meals first or just some vegetables? Or is it best to give her fruits first rather than savoury things??
I know I'm completely over thinking this whole thing but can't stop myself! 😂

Supposedly you should do veg before fruit to stop them favouring sweet things. I did things like carrot, sweet potato first.

NisekoWhistler · 25/08/2019 10:29

Definitely start with vegetables as per poster above they'll favour sweet if you give them too much.
Also check the pouches often they can have a lot of sweet fruits added to what you think are vegetable pouches.
Good luck

RibenaMonsoon · 25/08/2019 10:31

Veggies first, did those for about a week before I started ds on fruit. Don't know whether it was that or just dumb luck but he loves his veggies and eats anything I give him. He's now 3.

theWarOnPeace · 25/08/2019 10:34

Banana was the very first. Papaya. Carrot. Broccoli.

My son eats absolutely anything now at 8, even slightly spicy or unusual stuff like pickles, olives, sushi.

Variety is the key!

Sweetpotatoaddict · 25/08/2019 10:34

Steamed broccoli, in florets and steamed carrot sticks were a favourite with mine.

poolblack · 25/08/2019 10:36

DD 1 is old enough to have been given the wallpaper paste baby rice weaning treatment Blush

Next DD was weaned on veg purées

Further DC we just given bits off our plates Grin

AvengerDanvers95 · 25/08/2019 10:37

DD was sitting beside me on the sofa as I ate some toast, she reached over, grabbed a bit and started eating it. DS was on my hip as I held a cucumber and he leaned over, stretched his mouth round it and started munching.

ImportantWater · 25/08/2019 10:38

With DS1 I followed Annabel Karmel's weaning process so it was baby rice, then I think carrot. I followed it to the letter so I could tell you exactly what he had every day from the moment he turned 6 months.
Ds2 was trickier!

AwdBovril · 25/08/2019 10:39

Baby rice mixed with breast milk. First proper foods were peas, carrots, broccoli.

Chivers53 · 25/08/2019 10:40

There's loads of excellent advice if you google baby led weaning, we started with a meal a week (week 1 just breakfast, week 2 added lunch, week 3 added dinner as well). Be prepared for them not to always eat much which is fine, milk should still be their primarily source before 1, it's an excellent opportunity to get them experiencing different tastes and textures. Cucumber batons were the first food here as it was really hot!

AlmostAlwyn · 25/08/2019 10:42

Definitely overthinking! But don't worry, it's normal Grin

We started with carrot and parsnip batons, but give her anything you have - if she eats something, great! If most of it ends up in her hair, great! She's enjoying herself Wink

And starting solids with fruit won't make babies prefer sweet things. Breast milk and formula are sweet and it's all your baby has known so far!

Camomila · 25/08/2019 10:43

A finger of boiled sweet potato was the first thing I gave DS. He also liked brocolli, normal potatoes and parsnips. Tomatoes gave him a rash as a baby but he loves them now. Lots of fruit gave him rashes or made him throw up but luckily he grew out of it by about age 1.

hammeringinmyhead · 25/08/2019 10:43

Carrot puree, then sweet potatoes, broccoli, banana, apple etc. One at a time as DS has eczema and I was checking for allergies.

BertrandRussell · 25/08/2019 10:44

I didn’t exactly give it to her- but dd’s first solid food was a roast potato.......

JenniR29 · 25/08/2019 10:45

Started with baby rice and baby porridge then introduced veggies and fruit

LoisLittsLover · 25/08/2019 10:45

Brocoli on Easter sunday - funny the things you remember!!

Sotiredbutcannotsleep · 25/08/2019 10:45

Pureed sweet potato

SpeedyShutter · 25/08/2019 10:45

Chocolate ice cream

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 25/08/2019 10:46

Yoghurt

Ghanagirl · 25/08/2019 10:47

Broccoli purée.
Those pouches are awful and overpriced plain veg much preferable.

GizzardChops · 25/08/2019 10:48

Baby-led weaning my second here.
What you describe, a mix of (purée and finger foods) is "traditional" weaning.

With baby-led you can really just give them what you eat... being mindful of salt content, no honey, and no whole nuts. We started with bits here and there - a cucumber stick, a piece of pasta and we're gradually building up. Going slowly as there is no rush. Been a lot more relaxed with the second child. She doesn't respond well to being spoon-fed either.

DS was traditionally weaned and the was like feeding a hungry sparrow. His first food was steamed carrots and toast soldiers, which he mainly threw around. He ate a lot of single veg purées in the early days. He also loved porridge.

If you are uncertain about the process, as your HV if there are any NHS weaning workshops in your area. They'll outline your options and answer any queries!

GizzardChops · 25/08/2019 10:51

I made DD pea fritters last night. Peas, fried onion, an egg, and breadcrumbs - blitz in blender and then fried in a pan. She enjoyed mushing them up, but consumed some too.

Enjoy weaning - the little faces they pull are priceless!

meow1989 · 25/08/2019 10:52

Broccoli, he enjoyed being able to grab it himself.

If you google the Caroline Walker Trust they have a downloadable guide to the first year (personally I completely ignored the puree stage, ds always coped with mashed texture and finger foods, slent the first week gagging then no issues) that's got pictures of portions and ideas for recipes, it's really good.

thaegumathteth · 25/08/2019 11:02

Ds has sweet potato and carrot and the like

Dd just got given bits off our plate because by then I’d lost the will

theWarOnPeace · 25/08/2019 11:05

Sorry yes, should have added that we also did baby-led weaning. Worked for us, my kids eat anything plonked in front of them now. The choking fear didn’t really come into it, do your research though of course.
