DD will be 6 months next week so will be starting weaning her onto solids.
What's the best food to start her on? We will be doing a mix of baby led and pureed food so have some of the pouches, but is it best to give her the meals first or just some vegetables? Or is it best to give her fruits first rather than savoury things??
I know I'm completely over thinking this whole thing but can't stop myself! 😂

I'm old, so it was baby rice mixed with breast milk. Then moved on to purees. Baby led weaning wasn't a thing then.

whattodowith · 25/08/2019 11:06

Banana first with them all then moved onto other fruits and veggies. No dairy products until 8/9 months.

ICJump · 25/08/2019 11:10

Lasagna. She loved it

Oct18mummy · 25/08/2019 11:10

Lots of different vegetables and fruit. We did baby led weaning.

He loved eggy bread, cheese on toast etc too.

Have you considered going on a baby weaning course? I did one through nct and it made things a lot clearer for me.

Are you on Instagram - give sr_nutrition a follow she has loads of great advice on weaning etc

avocadotofu · 25/08/2019 11:11

We did/are doing BLW so we gave avocado and steamed broccoli. We gave him a lot of veggies in the first few months. The first couple of months were really tricky because he gagged a lot which I found really stressful. I wish I'd been aware that it's totally normal and they will eventually stop. I'd watch a few clips before you start so you know what it looks like. He also didn't eat that much for ages so don't worry if that happens to you too. Now he's 10 months old and he eats pretty much everything and he rarely gags.

LaMarschallin · 25/08/2019 11:17

As some PPs have said, the very first thing was breast milk and baby rice.
Hoping that they'd get used to a different texture while not having to get used to a different taste.

Then mashed potato (due to its blandness). Once they got used to that, I added little bits of things with more flavour to the potato such as pureed apple or banana. I used fruit initially because breast milk is a bit sweet. Perhaps vegetables would have been better health-wise.

Something I didn't try (because I just didn't think about it) was mashed avocado. Which now seems like a good idea to me.

dontlikebeards · 25/08/2019 11:17

DC1 - baby rice
DC2 - pureed carrot
DC3 - wotsits!!!Blush

Sammy867 · 25/08/2019 11:20

Sweet potato. It is high in vitamins and nutritionally good. I’d avoid rice and things like that as it has no nutritional value. We had a dietician led weaning due to multiple food allergies in the family and it was a mixture of purée and baby led. We introduced 1 new food every 3-4 days (to wait for allergies to manifest if they were going to) and now she eats anything

BertrandRussell · 25/08/2019 11:24

Ds loved dahl. There’s an Annabelle Karmel recipe I think. I’ll look.

EleanorReally · 25/08/2019 11:26

pureed parsnip

EleanorReally · 25/08/2019 11:27

tell a lie, pureed potato, closely followed by pureed parsnip

DuggeesWoggle · 25/08/2019 11:31

Sweet potato puree which he just didn't seem to like. Don't blame him, it tasted bleurgh.

A few days later, gave him some scrambled egg off my plate and he hoovered it up, gnawing on some crusty homemade bread too. Stuck with baby led weaning after that, didn't bother with purees and he never looked back.

Pascha · 25/08/2019 11:32

Ds1 took green beans off my plate when I wasn't looking Smile.

Ds2 stole, demolished and ate an entire breadstick in pizza hut Hmm.

notyourmummy · 25/08/2019 11:48

DS grabbed my toast off my plate, DD grabbed chicken off her brother's plate. After that they just had whatever they fancied off my plate (ALWAYS the things I wanted to eat myself...). Avoided honey, nuts and salty foods for the first 6m or so, otherwise everything was fair game.

Celebelly · 25/08/2019 11:51

Carrots! We did a lot of fruit first too but breast milk is sweet (not sure about formula) so babies already have a taste for sweet stuff anyway!

She's coming up for 7mo and the only thing she's been funny about is broccoli and salmon. We do a mix of purée and finger food. She loves sucking on watermelon!

FlyingSpaghettiM0nster · 25/08/2019 11:53

The first ever thing I gave my DS was baby rice, at 5 months. From there, he had pureed butternut squash, carrot, broccoli, apple, pear... Things like that. Once he got to 6 months I started adding meat to it and also made sure I included things like peanut butter and sesame oil. It's really important to introduce potential allergens as early as you can so help reduce the chances of them developing an allergy. The Annabel Karmel book is really good for ideas and I got the Made For Mums weaning app too which was really useful.

However, I would say that pureeing is a pain in the arse, I spent my entire Sunday for several weeks in the kitchen pureeing. Next time, I will use pouches a lot more, Aldi do some great ones.

ElizaPancakes · 25/08/2019 11:54

Avocado with DA3. He was a posh baby Grin

To be fair though, he basically eats anything now. Very varied diet, and very mature tastes.

ElizaPancakes · 25/08/2019 11:55

(Not saying his first food has much to do with that btw!)

Aprillygirl · 25/08/2019 12:00

Started mine on solids much younger than 6 months, so it was baby rice then pureed veg, the fruit and finally yogurt before moving on to proper (pureed) meals.

nobodylikesacockwomble · 25/08/2019 12:11

Thanks for the advice everyone, I don't feel as overwhelmed now!

You can tell she's my first baby, if we ever have another I'll probably just be flinging them DD's leftovers! 😂

Witchend · 25/08/2019 12:14

Dd1 baby rice mixed with breast milk (in those days you started at 4 months)
Dd2 refused point blank to let any solid food go down her throat until she was about 9-10 months. Then dd1 gave her a chocolate button. A week later she bent over to take a lick of ice cream. After that she thought she'd have some solids.
Ds I gave a piece of toast at about 7 months.

If I was doing it again, I'd go for ds' method.

Gobbolinocat · 25/08/2019 12:17

Sweet potato and butternut squash.

Re variety.

I gave both extraordinary variety. One has scaled tastes right back and younger has v limited range.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 25/08/2019 12:19

Grits with butter
pureed peaches
pureed sweet potatoes
pureed carrots
He was particularly fond of orange foods!

milliefiori · 25/08/2019 12:21

Twenty years ago there was an order everyone followed strictly. It went:
baby rice, then pureed pear, butternut squash, carrot, potato, stewed apple, mashed banana, mashed avocado and then you added what you wanted. But it was one week each on those. Iirc though, we weaned at 4 months.

Jinglejanglefish · 25/08/2019 12:22

A strawberry was DD's first. Then pureed veg but she didn't like spoon feeding so moved to blw pretty much exclusively.

You don't need pouches, it's not hard to boil some carrots or sweet potato and mash it up. DD is nearly 1 and has never had food from a squeezy pouch.
