To ask what was the first food you gave your baby?

DD will be 6 months next week so will be starting weaning her onto solids.
What's the best food to start her on? We will be doing a mix of baby led and pureed food so have some of the pouches, but is it best to give her the meals first or just some vegetables? Or is it best to give her fruits first rather than savoury things??
I know I'm completely over thinking this whole thing but can't stop myself! 😂

Also the BLW groups on FB are like a viper's nest (and that's coming from a frequent MN user). Some of them are incredibly militant and ridiculous.

ColaFreezePop · 25/08/2019 14:21

Some veg e.g. garden peas, carrots are actually sweet so if you start with them first and throw in stuff like kale and broccoli before adding in the fruit your baby will probably eat anything.

The main thing is to avoid anything sweetened particularly with concentrated fruit juice as loads of processed baby food is high in sugar.

My LO has started everyone around her on rice cakes. It is difficult but not impossible to find some without salt and sugar in them.

I wouldn’t bother with the pouches they taste like shite!! Start with purées like sweet potato, carrot, apple, pear, mashed banana and avocado. Finger sized boiled carrot, broccoli etc etc. do small batches of purée and put them in ice cube trays. They are easy to transport in Tupperware and defrost in less than a minute.

We did everything wrong and have DD a bit of fruit pouch on our finger, then from a spoon. We then offered food and pouches for 3 meals a day. At 1, DD is by far the best eater of our nct group. The other babies are still on melty puffs whilst she feeds herself a lasagna with no problem. Some of the Annabelle Carmel combinations sound utterly vile and the babies dont seem to gain any joy from eating or really know what food is. If I'm eating something then DD will either ask to share or just help herself. Some of her friends dont seem to know its food unless its slop still. I'm now converted to baby led weaning. Just make sure you know first aid in case of choking.

DS - cucumber and avocado he stole off my plate.

DD - chicken.

Both have had whatever we have eaten from day one, so usually porridge for breakfast, a sandwich, or the contents of it and bread strips for lunch and bolognese/ curry/ meat and veg for dinner, some fruit or veg sticks for snacks. DD loves watermelon and pulled chicken (not together), she's just turned 7 months. DS took to it better than DD but she's doing well after a few weeks and completely refused spoon feeding.

Don't worry if they don't immediately want to eat.

Hmmmbop · 25/08/2019 14:48

@Parker231 what were you eating that wasn't suitable? I can understand evening meals of take-away or readymeals not being suitable but unless lunch was all greggs and mcdonalds?

I often reheat leftovers from the night before for our 2 as they eat their evening meal much earlier.

Parker231 · 25/08/2019 18:32

We often have our favourite of a selection of sushi which DH or I would get on the way home from work or quick meals like pasta with mussels or prawns. Pouches or jars were easier and quicker for DT’s. They are at Uni now and eat everything and anything.

Letthemysterybe · 25/08/2019 18:34

Sweet potato at 6 months. He virtually bloody bit my hand off!!

ethelfleda · 25/08/2019 18:45

I did mashed potato - really well boiled potato mixed with breastmilk

Babysharkisanearworm · 25/08/2019 19:40

Carrot and it was then that I realised that the orange fruit and veg do not come out if clothing and bibs without serious soaking!

Atlasta · 25/08/2019 19:45

My two DC started on baby rice and porridge. I then started mixing them with banana and other fruitsBlush. Pear was a favourite.

beela · 25/08/2019 19:47

DS - wallpaper paste baby rice, followed by lovingly prepared organic mushed up veg, teeny tiny sandwiches, home made hummus, etc.

DD - strawberry ice cream, then a bit of brie and cranberry sandwich, then mainly ds's leftovers.

CluedoIsMyFavGame · 25/08/2019 19:50

Chocolate buttons 😁

A friend's 20yo son fed them to 5mo (exclusively BF) DS over my shoulder. Luckily he's our 2nd so I found it funny rather than was horrified.

Bourbonbiccy · 25/08/2019 19:54

Steamed peppers, broccoli and sweet potatoes fingers. We did the whole BLW thing.

LadyRannaldini · 25/08/2019 20:05

I recall my mother sitting for hours scraping the flesh of an apple for my baby, she, the baby, loved it!

takeasadsongandmakeitbetter · 25/08/2019 20:07

Don't worry about overthinking! I had a meal plan and chart Blush

I would take the advice to start with veg, careful of tomatoe, peppers and berries initially as they are known to cause some explosions!

We did mixed weaning too but mostly purée for the first few weeks and DS really benefitted from that. He still loves food and is a very good eater! He can feed himself at 15 months

Try and enjoy it!

Frannibananni · 25/08/2019 20:28

Pears - supposed to be gentle, well that's what our Pead told us at the time.

Dutch1e · 25/08/2019 20:31

That's quite a lovely image

Dandelion1993 · 25/08/2019 20:37

Veg or fruit. Doesn't matter as longs as its varied.

I started with baby porridge mixed with the usual formula milk (works the breast too) as it will taste familiar to them

Tcga745 · 25/08/2019 20:38

Theoretically did blw (but didn’t realise it was a thing) but also have each of the girls puréed beetroot as their first “official” food.
Dd2 first food was actually bacon fries that her brother had dropped on the floor (she crawled really early). She survived

ThisHereMamaBear · 25/08/2019 20:54

There's a brilliant book on weaning, why solids matter. I really enjoyed it
