To ask England, Wales and NI if they'd care if Scotland left?

Prior to Brexit, I always believed in the UK. After that vote, I no longer feel I belong to the rest of the UK. Clearly Scotland has different visions and hopes for the future.

I don't feel connected to the rest of the UK. I feel we share an island, but clearly we don't share a future. I am happy being European. I'm happy living in a country that embraces difference, and promotes tolerance. But I no longer feel these are UK values, even though I always would have said they were up until a couple of years ago.

So, a few years ago I said no to leaving. Since 2016 I've been kicking myself. But my question is, would those of you in the rest of the UK really care if we left? It currently seems like our differences are irreconcilable and I don't see a long-term solution.

We have a shared past. But I'm not sure I want us to have a shared future.

I care a lot, I'm gutted at the idea of the UK losing Scotland. I'm also a Remainer but losing Scotland is a bigger tragedy to me than leaving the EU.

I'm London born and raised though I now live in the north of England, and my identity is definitely British rather than English. I don't have a particular affinity with England, I feel British first and foremost.

I went to uni in Scotland, it's my favourite place for holidays and I'd move back there in a heartbeat if DH would agree. I think all the countries of the UK, including Scotland, benefit from us being together.

I can understand why many Scots might now have switched their vote to being pro-independence but if the UK breaks up, I will genuinely mourn the loss of Scotland.

It very much depends on how much English dosh they get to go. I think a lot of Scottish people are quite deluded in thinking they can go it alone without English funding.

But I do think it would be a terrible shame (I have English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish blood) if we split up.

Agree with everything you say. She’s toxic. I despise the woman.

^^Maybe if NS keeps pushing for another Scottish referendum we should have a "union" referendum covering all 4 countries and see where that goes?

And how would that work, pray tell ?

I dont know how it works but a union isn't a one way thing. Does it work for any of the countries any more? We can't go on in disharmony forever so it would be sensible if one party leaves to assess the whole thing. Perhaps we would realise we do have a good thing after all or perhaps not?

I’m English, my OH is Scottish although we live in England we have spent time in Scotland and OH has family there.

I have found some of the Scottish to be intolerant of the English. Straight off the bat some can have an attitude as soon as they hear my English accent. It’s depressing that if they learn my last name suddenly the attitude changes.

I have not seen or heard any racism or intolerance towards the Scottish from the English. This might sound awful and I don’t mean it too but I’m not sure many of the English think about the Scottish enough to have an opinion on them either way but that might just be the very small sample I’ve met and not actually representative of the wider world.

I would be sad if Scotland went it alone, but think if that’s what the Scottish want then we should let them go with the open invitation that they can come back at anytime.

I do think it’s sad that a lot of Scottish people seem to have a problem with the English but I think it’s been like that way before Brexit!

I would actually think about moving to Scotland should Brexit happen and Scotland stay in the EU but I wouldn’t do that unless me/any children/any family living with me sounded Scottish/had a Scottish accent, otherwise you really are setting yourself up for trouble in the street or in some public places especially if you have an English accent as for some reason the Welsh and Irish seem to get away with it. Why do the Scots get to vote on breaking up the union but nobody else in the union does?

ny20005 · 25/08/2019 18:02

@dementedma it's a vote for Scotland alone. Unions only work if parties are equal & this isn't.

In your world England would get to overrule everyone else.

MyNameIsArthur · 25/08/2019 18:09

I was born in Scotland but have lived most of my life in the South of England.

I would be so sad if Scotland left the union. I would also be sad if Wales or N Ireland were to leave. I believe we are so much better together and it would be a huge loss if the union were to divide. However I understand and respect if any nation chooses to leave

Runningsmooth · 25/08/2019 18:11

I'm in Northern Ireland and care very much whether Scotland stays or not. Scottish politics are much closer to mine. I can't fathom what the fuck has happened to English and Welsh values recently with BREXIT and xenophobia and the desire to drive poor people further and further into poverty and the erosion of the NHS. If Scotland leaves the UK there is no UK.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 25/08/2019 18:17

Ooh, Yorkshirewoman here, can we leave with you? A border across the midlands somewhere, maybe wiggling down so Wales can join us?

MyNameIsArthur · 25/08/2019 18:24

@ny20005 Scotland has a population of around 5.5 million, roughly the population size of Yorkshire. You cant expect Scotland to have a quarter of the representation of the UK with a population of 67.5 million. However Westminster needs to ensure that all areas of the UK are fairly represented in Parliament.

I do agree with you though that this should be Scotland's decision to leave the UK just as it was the UKs decision to leave the EU

avocadoincident · 25/08/2019 18:25

I hope Scotland go and I hope Wakes are brave and follow suit.

Chloemol · 25/08/2019 18:49

We are all European and will remain European after Brexit, it’s a continent not a country ( much as those leading the Eu may like to become one big country!)

As to Scotland I don’t care what they do, if they do leave it’s been made clear they won’t get automatic entry into the EU, would have to have the euro, won’t get any money under the Barnett formula , oil is reducing do not really sure how they would survive. Don’t forget they already pay a higher rate of tax than the rest of the uk so I suppose less people but paying more tax might work. It may just be in their interests to stay.

As we don’t know what will happen after Brexit let’s look on the positive side that we will prosper, and Scotland will benefit from that

TheSultanofPingu · 25/08/2019 19:04

Yes, I would care. It would be a great shame imo.

EugenesAxe · 25/08/2019 19:32

No I’d really like all parts of the UK to stay together. I’m pissed off that England messed up Brexit. I’m English for generations in case it matters.

Peanutbutterforever · 25/08/2019 23:08

I'm not fussed either way.

DarlingNikita · 27/08/2019 11:31

I certainly don’t recognise the experiences of people saying they face anti-English sentiment when visiting Scotland.

When I lived there I used to get people imitating my accent (well, actually, hearing my distinctly un-posh Aylesbury-suburbs accent and 'imitating' me in RP Hmm), pausing after uttering the words 'England', 'London' etc to make theatrical yuk noises, the works.

Maybe things have changed since then (I don't go to visit very often at all).

FloatingObject · 27/08/2019 12:43

I don't think Scotland is the least bit more tolerant. I think it's much more homogenous and therefore has a much less complex social and cultural landscape to work with. Sorry.
