To ask England, Wales and NI if they'd care if Scotland left?

Prior to Brexit, I always believed in the UK. After that vote, I no longer feel I belong to the rest of the UK. Clearly Scotland has different visions and hopes for the future.

I don't feel connected to the rest of the UK. I feel we share an island, but clearly we don't share a future. I am happy being European. I'm happy living in a country that embraces difference, and promotes tolerance. But I no longer feel these are UK values, even though I always would have said they were up until a couple of years ago.

So, a few years ago I said no to leaving. Since 2016 I've been kicking myself. But my question is, would those of you in the rest of the UK really care if we left? It currently seems like our differences are irreconcilable and I don't see a long-term solution.

We have a shared past. But I'm not sure I want us to have a shared future.

I would really care if Scotland or any other nation left the UK. I do believe we are stronger together.

BUT, I am English and am ashamed at now NI and Scotland have been shafted over Brexit. I hate what English politics has become. And I don't blame Scotland if they want to leave the UK.

Can some of us English remainers come too, please?

ssd · 25/08/2019 01:48

Its actually quite reassuring to read that English posters see how Scotland had been shafted.

JoannaCuppa · 25/08/2019 01:55

We know you have been @ssd. And NI too. It is a disgrace that Scotland were encouraged to vote no to independence, with the rationale of staying in the EU as part of the UK, only for Cameron to hold a shitty referendum with no checks and balances in place.

The fact that the NI peace process was largely ignored is also unforgivable.

That so many people DO support the government in these things, shows that England is not what I thought it was. I thought we had the same values as Scotland. It turns out we don't. I don't know how we can ever move past that, to be honest.

I hope for Scotland and NI's sake, that they are able to do whatever they feel is best for their own futures.

As to what us remainers in England and Wales do, I am not sure. Beyond cringe and fight to take the country back from the far right.

The U.K. wouldn't exist without Scotland. I disagree that Scotland is more tolerant of immigrants than England. That's a huge lie. I've lived in both countries, as an immigrant and definitely got more abuse in Scotland than in England (I live in the north and the south). But I think it would be sad if Scotland decided to vote for independence. However I find it sad that the U.K. will leave the EU. I hope it doesn't happen.

user2010202 · 25/08/2019 02:09

@gedsxppl I am genuinely sorry to hear of your experiences, Racism and intolerance have no place anywhere. The most depressing thing about this world (to me, anyway) is intolerance and hatred. Gosh, why can't we just live and let live. It seems so simple on paper, but in reality, it seems almost impossible.

My husband is an immigrant. In England he was regularly told 'to go home', the immigration procedures in the UK for a non-UK resident to come and live here are truly awful. It costs thousands of pounds, and is filled with complete bureaucracy. When Brexit happens we have accepted we will have to move to his home country. I will be so sad to leave Scotland (and actually, the UK I knew, because tbh I love it here).

I am sick of the B word and I wish it had all never happened. It has just caused to much pain and distress, and I still don't know what for.

I wouldn't give a flying fudge if Scotland left. We don't need them. Let them go. They need the rest of the UK a LOT more than we need them. As they will find out if they leave!!!

Knitclubchatter · 25/08/2019 02:53

It’s a separate country....
It’s own flag it’s own history and represents itself at the olympics and nato.

Time40 · 25/08/2019 02:58

I'm English and have no family connection with Scotland, but I would be devastated if Scotland left. I love Scotland, and I live there for several weeks every year. I love the fact that we are together in the UK. I was so happy when the vote was to stay. It would be incredibly sad to break up.

flirtygirl · 25/08/2019 03:00

And user1493759849 at 2.24pm, just showed the totally ignorant attitude that led to brexshit.

user2010202 · 25/08/2019 03:42

Well I guess it seems a lot of people outside of Scotland would be happy to see Scotland go. I am sad about it, I kind of thought we were one country.
If one day Scotland does go then I do wish the rest of the UK well. Racism and intolerance doesn't achieve anything.

Racism and intolerance doesn't achieve anything.

Scotland as a nation has more than its fair share or both. The atmosphere during the independence referendum was awful, easily the most ill tempered, intolerant, bigoted discourse I’d ever seen - until Brexit. And having lived the shit show that is Brexit, I can’t imagine Scotland leaving would be anything less than shambolic.

I live in Scotland, I absolutely love my home nation but I’m sick to death of it being portrayed as some morally superior panacea of acceptance, social justice and equality when that’s clearly not the case for many of our people.

RebootYourEngine · 25/08/2019 05:18

I am Scottish and don't want independence.

I think overall everyone is just sick to death with politics. Brexit, Scottish independence, who is PM this month. I know I am.

JellyNo15 · 25/08/2019 05:36

I really don't want Scotland to leave, the UK is surely stronger together? I am in Wales and I pray we are never independent. We are too small and poor. We really do need the rest of UK to survive especially as we won't have the rest of the EU.

Asdfghjklll · 25/08/2019 06:56

I am happy being European. I'm happy living in a country that embraces difference, and promotes tolerance

Sorry don't know how to quote properly. I am Scottish living in England. The Indy ref was truly appalling with so much anti English racism. Watching from afar it made me ashamed to be Scottish for first time ever.
Friends who worked campaigning to stay in UK were videoed and followed and intimidated. That is not allowing freedom of speech if instead of allowing everyone to have a say to allow people to make an informed choice you try and shut down the opposing side.
Also the finances don't really add up. Scotland draws more per person than they pay in England. Under the Barnett formula spend per head in England is approx £9000 and Scotland £11000. Someone has to pay for your free prescriptions and uni fees!!
And it's now too late. Even if Scotland held another Indy ref next week they would still be dragged out of Europe with rest of UK. If they then wanted to rejoin Europe it would be under the current rules of joining which are not as favourable and make the Euro currency mandatory.

Abouttimemum · 25/08/2019 07:07

I live near the border and I’d be devastated if Scotland left. I don’t understand, and this goes for all of the UK and EU, why people think that we’d be better off on our own. I’m embarrassed to be English sometimes. There’s a nonsensical superiority complex. ‘We don’t need them’ is the stupidest thing I hear on a daily basis. Eye rollingly awful.

Anyway please don’t go.

LagunaBubbles · 25/08/2019 07:14

Hmm
Snog · 25/08/2019 07:30

I'd prefer for the union to break up tbh

Mitebiteatnite · 25/08/2019 07:31

Genuine question, and I appreciate I may sound a little stupid here, but if Scotland were to gain independence and then seek to rejoin the EU, what would that mean for people wishing to travel to Scotland from England or vice versa? As it stands, if Scotland became independent but left the EU with us, things would remain as they are currently, correct? But if they rejoined, would we be looking at a 'hard border' so to speak? Would there be customs issues for goods travelling between the 2 countries, would you need a passport to cross the border?

FWIW, I'd be heartbroken if Scotland left. I'm married to a Scottish man (I'm English) and my in laws and extended family all live there. The anti-English sentiment seems to have grown somewhat over the last few years, understandably I suppose. And for the first time ever, I noticed it when I visited earlier in the year. Only once, from one particular woman, but it's not something I'd experienced before. I love Scotland, and dh and I have always said that we'll retire there. And on a very selfish level, it upsets me to think that it might not be possible in the future.

I don't want it to happen, mostly because I think a truly United Kingdom is important when we're such a tiny island. But I'm also not naive enough to believe that the majority of Scotland want to stay part of it anymore.

bellinisurge · 25/08/2019 07:40

I imagine tbe border would be like between Norway and Sweden but it would depend on any law enforcement and customs issues that would require a flexible increases or decreased physical presence.
I don't think the break up of the Union is a foregone conclusion despite all this crap we are putting ourselves through. But it is entirely a matter for Scotland and I wouldn't blame them for seeking better friends.

BarbariansMum · 25/08/2019 07:44

I'd be sad to see Scotland leave the union but I can see why its people might think it's in their best interests.

BunchMunch · 25/08/2019 07:44

If Scotland wants independence, then they should have it. Is there a clear majority for it now?
Scotland is a beautiful country with a long and proud history. I would wish them well if they voted to leave.
I think, as pps have said, that it would be messy to disentangle themselves from the UK.

Fridakahlofan · 25/08/2019 07:46

I would be sad if you left - very sad! England has lost its way, I'm ashamed. Brexit and Boris - yuck

suckerforbrowneyes · 25/08/2019 07:48

I’m Scottish.

I didn’t vote for independence and I never would vote for independence. I despise the SNP and their agenda.

ukgift2016 · 25/08/2019 07:48

The majority of us DO NOT give a fuck.

It's a joke at this point.

iano · 25/08/2019 07:49

I'd be sad but totally get it. Scottish remain voters must feel so frustrated with the situation.
