To ask if there are any G7 Civil Servants who would like to share their CV with me?

Have seen perfect G7 role (on promotion) but is asking for a CV (as well as online application form).

Currently an SEO with 24 years experience (started as an AA) and just not sure how I can condense my career history...

What headings and structure have you used?

Thanks in advance Smile

A few tips (SCS1 here):

  • omit the older experience, as roles at significantly more junior levels are unlikely to provide evidence relevant to a position at G7. If the panel want to know what you did earlier in your career, they can ask
  • feel free to combine roles at the same grade if needed to gain space, where they're not especially relevant to the role
  • your CV should be tailored for every role. If you're sending the same CV for multiple roles, you're doing it wrong 🙂
  • consider the nature of the role, and tailor the presentation of past roles to draw out the most relevant skills you've developed.
  • include a section on continuous professional development, to show courses etc that you've done
  • please, please, please avoid jargon and acronyms! This is always important, and especially so if you're applying for a role in another Department. I see way too many CVs that are utterly indecipherable. Remember that an ability to get your message across clearly is vital at G7.
  • find someone friendly at G6 or so, to cast an eye over the draft CV before you use it.

Hope that helps - good luck.

Thank you!

I’ve not had to do a CV before so this is new. I’m guessing two sides of A4 max?

Is there a mandatory or desirable experience criteria as part of the new style application? As when I advertised posts I used that and therefore just skimmed the cv to check that the relevant experience was there.

For your older experience at lower grades, I would literally bunch into grade and say what department you worked for (unless any of them are particularly relevant to the job you're applying for). Two sides of a4 would be a lot unless there isn't much else to the written application

Hi,

Yep, so mandatory and desirable along with the CS behaviours.

Yep, could bunch together to save space.

Thanks :)

I was told to focus on what I achieved in each job, not the day to day grunt of what the job involved.
