Homeless in temporary accommodation

Would like some Q’s answered, am so stressed. Hope to get someone went through the same boat and share their experiences.

I was put in b&b last year August with my four children for six weeks . It was awful sharing bath and third floor with loads and stairs. Finally got moved to a temporary accommodation 10 miles away from family and support network gave up at the end and moved kids school and trying to pass the days to get some where permanent to be more stable. However they don’t say when and the bidding system it’s just a lie hope they make you hold to it.

As a homeless u placed in band 3 and always comes to be number 200-350 , i dont understand it if someone homeless with priority need placed in band 3 . I mean if u look at the housing history to be honest no one has been offered a house in band 3 in what so ever, how they expecting me to won one.

Spoke to my housing team they said we don’t know when u going to be permanently rehoused .. u just need to keep on bidding .

I have now lived in this temporary accommodation for a year and still on. So stressed and miserable Unstable, I have had an inspector last month to check the property how I looked after it. Which he was very impressed. Don’t understand his visit anyway as he mentioned to check health and safety.

Would anyone tell me how they got offer ? Or bidding and how long they stayed for . Please give me some hope and positive Experience.

How old are your kids OP ?

It varies a lot from council to council, OP. Where I live, it's around 3-12 months in TA. In the neighbouring council, it's several years, but after a few months they place people in private rented property that they lease from private landlords. Once they've done that, people can stay there for 10-15 years.

In some London boroughs, people can be in TA for 3 years or more.

It can also vary with the size of the property you need. My council is particularly short of 2-bed accommodation, so families who need 3 beds get rehoused more quickly.

I was just coming on to ask if you was in London as that would be standard in my borough.

I lost a job & then had MH issues so had someone who was assigned to find me somewhere after 2 weeks in MH unit. . I did 6weeks temp accomodation in what was basically a grim, converted garage, then they found me a really big studio in a nice area thru a private rentals Agent who takes Housing Ben. There's an incentive scene of £1200 they give Landlords to take benefit tenants. Could you give up on council route & ask them re this scheme as it's national as far as I know. Roughly 80% of private rentals agents where I live accept benefit tenants as that's their bread & butter & rent from Housing Ben which you get paid direct to them is guaranteed, steady money (I'm in NE London). I met women with kids in the MH unit who were 2yrs into temp accommodation because council flat was their goal. I'd rather go my route as my rent is a fair one & it's a good area.

Thank you, private rent it’s a pain and not secure , is just I don’t want to repeat the same route few years later.. although I want to give up HB , want to sort my life out and stand on my feet to work . So high rent and child care will let us in poverty.

Ive been in my temporary accomidation for 2 years in November, i was fleeing DV at the time & my children were both under 2 so i was glad to be in a new area away from family and friends because they were all just links back to my ex in my eyes

I assume your on Manchester Move? There are hundreds of people waiting to be housed on there, im always 200 and somthing in line. Have you looked at other housing assosiations?

I have joined 2 more social housing things and the waiting lists are no where near as long as Manchester Move. One is still 150+ but the most recent one i have joined there was only 21 people bidding on the same house as me & i was number 16.

And the other houses i was bidding on i was 48 out of 58. Still bottom of the list but its so much smaller. The reason its took so long to get on the most recent council list is because some councils want you to have lived in the area for 1 or 2 years

If you are with manchester move then i really would advise looking at other councils. I used to mither them until they told me they had families living in hostels.

Temporary housing really isnt a priority because youve got a home x

I don't know if it is helpful to you but from my experience, you can shoot up pretty quickly. Because everyone bids on everything they're eligible for, when they get a place they free up more than 1 bid. It's horrible at the time but you will get there - just hang on in

Thank you for replaying, I believe they have a target to house family in temporary accommodation with permanent, I mean bidding of course not getting us no where, and it’s not fair system , specially in Manchester.. homeless in other county they housed you within 2 month at maximum if u didn’t win any bid. I don’t get it overcrowded gets more priorities than homeless. They said we don’t have houses availabile and they have tons every week advertised..

Some people don’t get even to bid, they just got a call, it’s really depends on the housing Officer . I know lot of people who were lucky to get somewhere very quick and happy for them but not happy with the system.

I have been registered with different councils across the country believe me, just fed up. Don’t want to reach to a level that I will be dead alive. But even though didn't getting anywhere decent. Hope things will work out .
