OWN INSULIN THE UK AND NOT HAVE TO GET IT FROM GERMANY ETC?

OP posts:
Catsandchardonnay · 23/08/2019 13:36

The only people holding us to ransom are Boris Johnson and his twattish mates 😡

JemimaPyjamas · 23/08/2019 13:38

@portocristo I am a Type 1 too. I have discussed this with my diabetic nurse and she told me that the government has planes on standby they will use which is / will cost millions but will mean that lorries of insulin aren't going off in ports

Myriade · 23/08/2019 13:40

That’s because we live now in a world where everything is interconnected and there is no going away from that.
It’s even ‘worse’ because THANKS TO the EU, we could ‘delegate’ some tasks, such as producing insulin, wo any risk or any issues with deliveries.
(Note that the reverse is true too and that firms/people in the EU have been relying on products made in the U.K. too).

So yes, no deal means a big risk in the delivery of insulin and many other medications.
And no there is no way we can build factories and start producing just now to compensate.

And yes many people whose life is dependent on medicines are scared and relying on the NHS stockpiling enough to see them through (remembering the issue with liquid foods atm that is leaving many people malnourished etc....). It’s a dangerous game....

Myriade · 23/08/2019 13:43

And the U.K. isn’t healed in ransom.

It DECIDED to leave the EU with no transition period to adapt.

Noth8ng to do with Germany (or France or whoever else) if there has been no planning forward about all those ‘small issues’.

@jemimaPyjamas, yes I’m sure we can use planes instead. For insulin. What bout all the other life depending medicines people take? How is that possible that we can find those millions of pounds now but somehow NOTHING was available to spend on the NHS, benefits, educations, local authorities etc etc...
The whole thing makes my blood boil.

MitziK · 23/08/2019 13:44

When it's relating to supplies of a medication that people die if they don't have, @FamilyofAliens, I tend to think that shouting is pretty fucking reasonable.

JemimaPyjamas · 23/08/2019 13:48

@Myriade It makes mine boil too! It's all a complete bloody mess. I mentioned insulin as that's what I specifically know about as it's relevant to myself. I am more than aware that there are countless other crucial medications out there that are just as important

timshelthechoice · 23/08/2019 13:48

Don't you just know that all the numpties will then blame the EU for all the ills of Brexit. SMH.

WispaGoldsshouldcomeinmultipac · 23/08/2019 13:51

@lipsticktaser has won the internet today 😀

EssentialHummus · 23/08/2019 13:55

We're not being held to ransom. We're holding a gun against our own collective head and saying that if we don't put the gun down we'll shoot.

Cyclemad222 · 23/08/2019 14:05

GOOGLE COMPARATIVE ADVANTAGE

it's not economically efficient for every country to make everything

  1. Insulin can’t be stockpiled
  1. We aren’t being “held to ransom”. The decision to end all trade deals is unilaterally the UKs decision.
  1. Pharmaceutical companies are businesses. They don’t have the social responsibility to manufacture all the drugs in all the countries just in case we get a batch of especially dense and egocentric MPs
  1. Once we get a trade deal with the USA we will have insulin. Unaffordable insulin, but insulin all the same. The price of insulin has gone up 1000% in the USA. How do you like those apples?

We’re not being held to ransom by the EU. Brexit is a choice that “we” made Sad

Shouting makes you look stupid. As does voting for Brexit.

Throckmorton · 23/08/2019 14:35

Lora8

  • We don't get most drugs from the US
  • Drugs are cheaper here than in the US
  • Drugs don't cost peantus to make. To get one drug to market, a company will have spent about $1 billion
99problemsandjust1appt · 23/08/2019 14:38

Don’t worry

Novo Norfolk have already secured supplies and delivery schedules are set in the event of no deal
Other insulin producers are doing the same
Insulet already have extra supplies here

It’s all taken care of and no reason to worry

99problemsandjust1appt · 23/08/2019 14:39

Nordisk not Norfolk

99problemsandjust1appt · 23/08/2019 14:40

It can be stockpiled if refrigerated some vials are expiry 2021

Pasithea · 23/08/2019 14:41

It’s fine us diabetics can’t eat without insulin. So there will be enough food for the rest of you. Ethical cleansing a beneficial side effect.

BillywilliamV · 23/08/2019 14:43

Big Pharma is made up of small people like me, trying to do our jobs and proud of the fact that our jobs do make a difference.

C8H10N4O2 · 23/08/2019 14:55

Sorry for the caps first time poster

Apart from your posts in June and July under this name?

(nothing against Germany )

Hmm
familycourtq · 23/08/2019 15:00

Because the insane economic system we have created means it is cheaper to destroy the world shipping things (sometimes repeatedly) from country to country than it is to produce stuff locally.

ElleDubloo · 23/08/2019 15:03

@familycourtq “destroy the world shipping things” - just to mention, shipping isn’t the only thing that damages the environment. Sometimes it’s not worth building a factory in every part of the world, in order to produce things locally. E.g. if every part of the world has 10 people needing insulin, we only really need one factory somewhere to produce it. Hope that makes sense.

LauraKsWhiteCoat · 23/08/2019 15:09

I know right, Germany holding us to random threatening to withhold stuff we need unless we do what they want.

Oh wait no that was us, or rather our Home Secretary. Threatening to starve the Irish unless they gave in to our demands.

As you were.

FamilyOfAliens · 23/08/2019 15:11

When it's relating to supplies of a medication that people die if they don't have, @FamilyofAliens, I tend to think that shouting is pretty fucking reasonable.

Except that shouting doesn’t make your message any more coherent. Same as when you pick out one poster to swear at, out of dozens saying the same thing.
