OWN INSULIN THE UK AND NOT HAVE TO GET IT FROM GERMANY ETC?

OP posts:
DishingOutDone · 23/08/2019 12:52

Wos it made of? Welsh animals? Bloody forrin insulin! Coming over 'ere, being forced into our diabetics ...

Tonnerre · 23/08/2019 12:53

Does it matter why? The simple fact is that we don't, no-one has bothered to put in place any alternatives to importation, and we are therefore either going to have to pay a fortune for it in future or allow people to die without.

Thehop · 23/08/2019 12:55

We’ll have to pay fortunes or not have it. Then people will be

WIV THE ANGLES

ImNotYourGranny · 23/08/2019 12:58

Cost. It's cheaper to buy it/make it abroad. Or at least it was.

AmIThough · 23/08/2019 13:00

Yes YABU

ImNotYourGranny · 23/08/2019 13:01

Same with isotopes. DH, a nuclear scientist, says that if the UK government were competent the country could have been producing it's own within a year of the referendum. But they're not, so we're fucked.

Yogurtcoveredricecake · 23/08/2019 13:01

Bloody German insulin coming over here, regulating British blood sugars.

walkintheparc · 23/08/2019 13:03

Why can't we just all grow our own food, I suppose, if we're going to go down that route.. I can't as I don't have a garden or nearby allotment.

Or the weather for half the stuff we actually want to eat

Starfish28 · 23/08/2019 13:04

Jesus wept. Is this what the Brexit debate has come to? Shouty caps locks about the global pharmaceutical trade?

ImNotYourGranny · 23/08/2019 13:08

Or the land. If the UK farms every single bit of farmable land to it's maximum capacity we'd only produce enough to feed 2 thirds of the population.

cottonwoolbrain · 23/08/2019 13:09

Perhaps the OP is actually worried and shouting is her way of saying so. However, the answers are correct, its not as simple as setting up a little factory and producing the stuff it has to pass all sorts of regulations and controls and then the cost benefits to the pharmaceutical companies has to be considered.

I have to admit that I'm frightend as to what will happen if I can't get hold of the drugs I need to control my medical condition. There's a very high chance of me ending up in hospital without them. The government's contingency plan does not give me much reassurance either

timshelthechoice · 23/08/2019 13:09

Worry not, someone will soon be along to tell you that you are perfectly capable of growing your own food in your bedsit or the shipping container the council stuck you in (and your fault for being homeless, anyhow).

I don't think people realise, too, that not every council in the UK even has allotments.

And the smart thing to do, in a situation like yours, would be to steal it from people who grow it. Good ol' Blitz Spirit and al'

LakieLady · 23/08/2019 13:10

Why can't we just all grow our own food, I suppose, if we're going to go down that route.

We reckon our garden is big enough for us to keep a pig. We have yet to agree which of us will slaughter it.

We might as well build our own cars while we're at it.

ImNotYourGranny · 23/08/2019 13:11

Rule of thumb is that you need 1 acre of land to feed 1 adult.

ItsABubbleParty · 23/08/2019 13:11

Because we exist in a global market FFS

MockersthefeMANist · 23/08/2019 13:14

AM I BEING UNREASONABLE TO REMEMBER WE USED TO HAVE THE EUROPEAN MEDICINES AGENCY BASED IN UK BUT THEY MOVED TO HOLLAND BECAUSE OF BREXIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wonkylegs · 23/08/2019 13:16

Most drugs that supply the world are only made in a few places because they require specialist equipment/ facilities and are highly regulated as they we really want them to be the best quality, some are also trade secrets until they come out of patent (as the companies want to recoup their research and development costs)
When they had Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rica it caused mass shortages in the US and there was a crisis for drugs like my medication and I had friends who struggled until they managed to sort that one out.
Short shelf life drugs are a particular problem (hence the concern about insulin)
It costs significant upfront investment to set up new manufacturing facilities- why would a pharmaceutical company do that for a country which is about to shoot itself in the foot, can't quite work out how or when it's going to do that and is about to hit recession (hitting profits) - the reality is that pharmaceutical companies are in it for the money, they are charities and this doesn't make sense for them.

portocristo · 23/08/2019 13:20

Sorry for the caps first time poster, yeah prob should have posted in the Brexit topic, only asking cos my friend who's daughter is type 1 says she thinks the NHS is stockpiling, just thought it we produced it ourself we wouldn't be held to ransom if we come out without a deal (nothing against Germany )

OP posts:
Youngandfree · 23/08/2019 13:22

Do you have any idea how the pharmaceutical industry works OP?!! Even if the correct facility was to be built tomorrow I’m guessing it would take between 2-5 years for them to successfully make and sell a product! It’s not like a bloody cafe where they just start making something! EVERYTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING in a pharmaceutical company is regulated and follows exact procedures, even how they clean the floors is a procedure (and a strict one at that) so ideally yes it would be nice for the UK to make their own insulin but that’s not going to happen any time soon!

ImNotYourGranny · 23/08/2019 13:23

We won't be held to ransom by Germany or anyone else. This is entirely self imposed, it's us holding the gun against our heads.

ImNotYourGranny · 23/08/2019 13:24

PS The NHS won't be stockpiling insulin. It doesn't have a long enough shelf life.

MockersthefeMANist · 23/08/2019 13:26

In what way would the Germans 'Hold us to ransom?'

Is it their fault that a £ is now worth about 1 Euro?

kateandme · 23/08/2019 13:27

what is this bloody idiotic ideal that WE NEED TO BE SEPARATE. we all share and make things and then trade.its isnt a problem.why this need to be "all in britain" bullcrap.
weve been creating, making sharing between other countries for ever.we fucked it up with this need to be "our own island"

kateandme · 23/08/2019 13:28

ps we arent held to ransom.we decided to do this to us.we our holding the gun to our own heads.

BillywilliamV · 23/08/2019 13:30

Not a German problem, your problem is getting through the border to a non EU country, which is what we will be.

None of this was EVER broke, but it’s going to take a hell of s lot to fix it now!
